So, I have ordered my new MOBO and Cpu, and I will be needing to apply thermal paste. My New Dual Core AMD Cpu:http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...?EdpNo=3573140
1. Some heatsink companies send their cooling products with a pre applied amount of thermal paste on it, would I have to apply the paste to the Cpu also?
2. Some websites say to apply a grain of rice glop on the center of the Cpu and it will spread over time. Others says we should put a glop in the center and spread it with a razor or a credit card. What do you think?
3. When putting on my heatsink does the angle matter? (When putting the heatsink over the Cpu, kind of rolling the heatsink over the cpu.)

The way to do this varies on the core type. I will look for a guide on doing this I saw somewhere.

Usually, the pre-applied stuff is ok-ish, but you're always better using some good stuff like ceramique. As to applying to the CPU - yes. Cling film on finger and rub in a spot til it's transparent (apparently).
The preferred method is to spread - but a lot of clockers say it doesn't matter.
Angle? It has to be flat down on the CPU - no angle at all (well, an angle of 0 degrees, I suppose). I'm guessing that's not what you meant?

1: Pre-applied thermal paste is sufficient, but you will get better results with Artic Silver etc
2: Combination of both; it will spread over time, but you should still spread it a bit yourself.
3: A 90 degrees angle would be the best, but it's not going to blow up on 91

hmm, i've always just apply a small glob of it in the middle of the chip, and then press the heatsink directly down on it.

And dont use too much of it, just enoegh to cover the entire surface of the CPU and cooler. The paste is only used for filling up microscopic gaps in the surface of both the cooler and CPU, enhancing the heat-transport from CPU to cooler. If you use too much paste, it will only slow down the cooling since the cooling is done by the cooler itself and not the paste, it would only take more time for the heat to pass through.

Yeah. It depends on the core architecture and brand of thermal paste.
Depending on your thermal paste, but for that AMD, I suggest using the glob of rice method, don't place the heatsink on the CPU at an angle.

why use thermal paste? to fix the incorectabilities in a mirrorflat surface (got to get the old oc.co.uk guide (got it somewhere ) to achieve a mirrorflat surface on a cpu aka the flatter (straightened out it is) the better the cooling, but don't go around fixing a whole tube of Arctic silver 5 on it cause that'll be 1 messy 2 you're ready for the asylum xD

Want a good judge of how much paste to use? For an AMD, look at your pinky fingernail. Divide it in half if you have large hands; for small hands, use the same size.
For Intel, big hands = divide by 4, small hands = divide by 2.

Even if you lap, you have to apply thermal paste, because even if TIM doesn't transfer heat as well as solid metal, it does a hell of a better job then air.
Both my waterblock and CPU are both hand lapped, and I still use TIM.

Yeah, that's the point of TIM. Even with the best lapping in the world, look at a mirror-finish under a microscope and you're looking at crevices and fissures.
