Connection problems.

So basically.. I've had a new router for some months now, and a new modem as well.

But all of the sudden, for the last 3 days I am getting horrible connectivity, Guild Wars just keeps erroring and kicking me off all the time, getting stuck at 0% loading, all websites load slow / fail to connect on the first try, and youtube videos will not load either.

This is on both of my computers - one on WiFi, and one Wired, so I know it isn't any firewalls, also one computer has windows XP, the other Vista, so theres some differences to be had between the two.

So.. it's really annoying me, and I don't even know where to start to diagnose any problems, any help would be appreciated - I was going to wait a few days to see if it cleared up, but it's becoming more persistent as time goes by it almost seems.

Thanks either way.

It could be a number of things:

- router and/or modem packing it in
- isp having issues
- major hub/linkage not directly in your isp's hub thats having issues

Try doing a tracert on both computers to the same site and seeing where the packets start dropping / timing out. This should then tell you where the problem lies...

ie if you can't even get out to your isp without drop / time-outs, issue is with modem/router... if it can't get past your isp .. then obviously your isp, and then it it gets out.. issue is in hub/linkage elsewhere.

Oh, have you tried doing a winsock reset on both comp's? (as well as a int ip reset on the vista machine?)

Tried only having 1 comp connected to the modem and/or router and seeing if that resolves issue?

Tried clearing IE's cache and defaulting ie?

Tried power cycling both modem and router?

Tried defaulting both back to factory settings and re-configuring?

So, the Aussie is our networking guru, eh?

An idea might be to run GW with the -diag switch (or use the funky "check my computer" button on the GW login screen that does the same thing.)

Apart from lots of DirectX garbage, it does a tracert from you to ANet - a few tries at that will tell you if your packets are getting stopped at a particular node.

LOL Dunno about being a network guru. All I did was think about what I'd say at work if a customer had similar problems.. heh and I'm sure there's stuff I've prolly forgotten or overlooked.. LOL

I'd also recommend giving this a shot as well. Nice tracert to GW server's, as well as a whole lotta other information about your network, network adaptor, computer, etc. TBO, never seen that "Test My Computer" till now.. maybe because I'd set the game to auto login .. lol don't do that anymore though.. heh

But yeah, the most important aspect is the tracert test to see where/if there is any issue's along the path between your comp and GW server's.

Might help some to try using OpenDNS servers http://www.opendns.com/ They currently are: 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220 Also if you have been using torrents recently they can cause a lot of connection problems for some routers. The router tries to remember all the connections which eventually overloads it, requiring a reboot.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I did run the ''test my computer'' button, and everything was successful. I know it isn't A-Net, because I am getting weird problems like my F-List disconnecting but it still says I'm online, It has to be a router issue.

And I have reset the router and modem two times, that didn't help. I guess later I'll try to run those test things. And I don't torrent so that wouldn't be the problem I don't think.

You on DSL or cable. Most likely if its cable, routing problem from the isp servers, maybe packet loss, routers and so on. DSL might be poor line stats as of recent.

High Speed Cable, the router is a Belkin Wireless N router, and the modem is a D-Link.

I haven't had time to do any tests today cause there's a lot going on around the house. It seems that the problems only happen at night though, around 10 PM to 3 AM, then it clears up.. so I think I'm going to call my ISP and ask them what the hell is going on at that time, they have good support so if it is them, they'll get to the bottom of it.

I still have a feeling that it's my stuff though, because usually if it's the ISP I never get weird errors like I've been getting, it's just really bad lag, but I have had 0 lag, nothing but good pings. It's just errors and d/cs at random.

EDIT: Update - I called my ISP and they said everyone is having trouble connecting to sites and games, and they have Engineers working on it - there is no estimated time as to when the issue will be resolved. That was the automated message I got when first calling in, but I stayed on the line to have a dude run a diag on my modem, he said it's all good, and that I have no packet loss or anything. So basically it is just the ISP and not my gear.. so I have to wait it out. Lame.

Good thing I called in before hand, rather than messing up all of my network settings just to later find that out.

Call back and be sure they credit you for the duration of the outage/issues. :P

Heh, sometimes I've had outages that lasted up to 5 hours, and that was on Cable, Telephone, and Internet.. so I could virtually do nothing, and since I don't have a cellphone activated at the moment that renders me useless.

But it's been a while since any of those have happened, not since last year. And with my new router and modem I have had zero problems on my side fortunately, about time since I was tired of dealing with bad network gear.
