I have had this several times while playing GW. First, the game acts like it's lag freezing, but then the whole screen goes black. The game is still running. I know this from 2 ways.
1. One time I heard the "ding" of a pm right after this happened. I pressed backspace to respond, and it turned out to be my friend who called me shortly later, he was able to receive the PM.
2. One time I was doing Destruction's Depths with my ele, this happened on the last level. I was with h/h so i was able to c-space my way until i heard the cut scene play, and finally ended up in the CTC.
Both of these times, there seemed to be no lag.
I can minimize Gw, but it is really laggy. It will become less and less laggy over time, and will stop most of the way right after I close GW. However, if I try to open GW again, it inst black, but really laggy. To remedy this, I have to restart my computer and it goes back to normal.
I leave my computer on with Gw open (minimized though) most of the time, day and night. I think this may be a problem with my video card, I'm not sure. Any ideas?
My video card is a Radeon X300 SE

Tried updating drivers? If so, then roll back, if you haven't, then updating them may help.
Dusted out the PC recently?
I run mine 24/7 with no problems, but it's usually up and not minimized.

Video card is borked, could be just temporary tho.
It doesn't sound like its overheating, more like the drivers has crashed and your OS is unable to recover and restore.

I get this very same crash too on very rare occassions. It most definately is not overheating. I've had it suggested by guildies who have also experienced that it is just a rare bug which may be indicative of archive corruption.
I run an Nvidia GTX8800, and my drivers are up to date. So it is obviously not just linked to a certian card type.
From the tone of your post you get this frequently. My suggestion is to update drivers (if necessary) and then reinstall. If you still get it on a regular basis talk to support.
EDIT: reinstall GW that is, and -image.

I remember reading that this was a driver problem affecting LCD displays, but I don't recall where or any details. Updating the drivers would be a start.

This isn't very frequent- like once a month at the most. It's just annoying. I'm also worried it may cause permanent damage in the long run. I will try updating the drivers, and maybe cleaning out the CPU.

I'm going to bring this back up for 2 reasons.
1.It keeps happening. It threatened to ruin a DoA run as well as just being plain annoying.
2.Now sometimes my screen fuzzes out for a second and then goes back. It even makes an audible sound over my speakers. This usually happens for a little bit after I restart from a crash.

Did you ever update your drivers? Perhaps try doing this in the process: http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/
It is a low end / budget / low profileish card after all.. really not that great, I'd say an upgrade is in proposition, card could be borked or something like Admael said a long while ago.

Im starting to thing that this issue isnt due to video card failure (same thing happens to me when I try to use my nvidia 9800). There have been many posts about this.

SAme type of problem here... happens about once per week to me and normally after a couple hours of play. there is nothing that preceeds it (artifacts or lag or anything) the screeen just goes black. I can hear the game still playing (castng, dying, killing) but I cannot get the video back until reboot. After reboot, things are immediately ok.
I have a Sapphire 2600 HD Pro video card. AGP.
Honestly, I think its a driver issue, but I have the latest drivers from Saphirre. Any ideas? Any have a 2600 HD and NOT seeing this problem? What is your driver version?
Did anyone ever get a fix for this?

I just received my new dell precision mobile m6400 with a quadro FX3700M. I was excited about running guild wars at max everything, but It randomly crashes to black screen. This happens in other games as well, but its worst in Guild Wars. I have tried every vid driver under the sun with no luck. I can still here sound running in background but have to hard reboot to get going again. Any help would be appreciated. Also, there are many other threads on the net of people that had dell almost completely replace there hardware and it didnt help.

im going out on a limb but maybe it has to do with 3d setttings on your video card you got anti aliasing on off program managed whats you open gl setttings direct 3d settings any thing else you can think it seems like a lot of people have the same problem with a lot of different video cards so if we can find something everyone is doing maybe we can find a solution. it might be one of those different settings that is causing this
