Rangers Pets?

I am a ranger/mesmer and I have the quest in old ascalon where I have to charm a stalker. Well here's the problem I do not have the Charm Animal spell. It is offered as a reward for the quest but otherwise I can't get it. So here's my question since I do not have the charm animal spell is it possible for me to complete this quest or ever get a pet for my ranger?

You don't have the spell? You must have jumped into post-sear without getting that skill. You actually do a quest in pre-sear and get the 2 skills you need to charm pets.
Yes, you will have a pet. Buy the two skills from Sir Bertran in Ascalon City. Make sure to buy both Charm Animal and Comfort Animal. Comfort animal will heal your pet and you must have Charm equipped if you want your pet to come along.

If you missed the quest, since your so very early on in the game, I would sugest deleting that char and creating a new one.
Just make certain you put everything in Storage first.
Alway do every possible quest before leaving Pre-Searing, that includes all of the secondary prof quests as well as every primary one. They are your best and fastest means of lvling and getting free skills.

I wouldn't delete a character just because you skipped that quest.... unless... you went to post sear as a level 2. 
If this is your first character, you should do all the quests, you get a bunch of free skills, learn the game, the story line, and have fun!!

You say your in Old Ascalon I read that as your still in presearing, so unless you have hit a bug the skill should be available.
If I am wrong about that then forget what I say next.
When your offered skills and your skill bar is full you get the offer to replace a skill you have now or later.
Have you checked that the skill isn't in your skill list, press K and look through what you have in your list.
If you at any time spoke to the guy and took the quest the skills should be there.

Anyway as others have said just go into Ascalon City and buy the skill Charm Animal from Sir Bertran (Skill trainer).
Not quite sure why so many are saying to buy 2 skills to charm a pet as you only need Charm Animal. Comfort Animal is good to have if you are going to use a pet but, for this quest you only need Charm Animal.

Too much gaming not enough sleep causes me to halucinate.
I was reading it as the first quest to gain a pet which starts right by a couple of stalkers.
Its been so long since I was in that part of prophesies I forgot the other quest.

the quest is only in pre, so if i'm reading the OP correctly, it is still in the quest log but was never completed in pre.
i suggest abandoning the quest in town and buying charm animal from a skill trainer. then you can charm a pet.
