New compter (kinda) more crashes
nameless bond
Ok, heres the skinny, I recently got a new computer, on paper it blows my old one out of the water, bt it crashes every 15 - 20 minutes lately, I'm thinking its a connection problem but I'm on a 10 MBit line, (runs about 7) my other thought it was the graphics card, double the speed of my old one, but from what I've read online it seems like its a bad one, anyway heres my spec's I'm hoping that someone can tell me if I should change my graphics card or any other suggestions would be awesome,
all the info here is coming from the guildwars test my system thingie

jiggles
i aint really compuet savvy, but try XP SP3, see if it still crashes, else take what people say after me more seriously ^^
fusa
When it crashes is it Guild Wars crashing, or does your computer restart? If it restarts, whats the error message do you get on the blue screen? How is the temperature of your motherboard, processor and video card? Is you hard drive defragmented? Have you tried using contig to defragment gw.dat? I'm not sure of the latest video drivers for the 6800 but 1/16/2006 seems like your drivers are probably outdated. Have you tried playing with sound completely disabled (to rule out sound problems)?

jiggles - I heard that SP3 was a nightmare
fusa - Its a mixture, mostly its just Guildwars that crashes but sometime I do get a restart,
I thought it might have been the temps, but I'm sure they are running in normal ranges, I'll check when I play next time and post the temps here,
I haven't defraged in awhile but it's a clean windows install, every time I try to install the latest drivers from Nvidia everything crashes, and nothing at all works for more than 30 seconds before it restarts, I had to roll back to before I installed using safemode,
I haven't tried the sound thing but I don't think thats it, I will try that later too,

Try running your video card through a stress test using http://www.nvidia.com/object/ntune_5.05.54.00.html or http://www.futuremark.com/download/

the geforce 6800XT was state of the art... 4 years ago.
i don't know how much you've paid for it, but hopefully it wasn't much. whoever sold it to you just slapped together some outdated parts and called it a computer.
anyways, when does it crash? does it just crash when its idling, or when you are playing a game, etc?
EDIT: if it crashes predominately in GW, it might suggest either the card is going bad, or your power supply is not up to snuff. the 6800XT does have a hefty power draw.

The only documented issues with SP3 was because Hewett Packard screwed up. They included Intel files on AMD machines, which caused some bad issues. Microsoft has issued a hotfix for this, if I recall correctly. Which means contrary to the popular misconception, the Error Reporting service does indeed work.

Reformat, reinstall all drivers, ONCE. do not use CD's, go online and find most recent. if it stilld oes it, its a hardware issue. that might mean Temps, because it manages to stay on for some time before it fails.

Depends on what you use your computer for. If you want to play games like Crysis, get a new processor, I suggest an AMD Phenom 3X Core are about 150$. Ram is ok, another 2 gig would cost like 35$ on tigerdirect.com. Graphics card....... let me put it this way, my on board graphics card has more memory than that thing, get a card from the GeForce 8 series. The 8800 gts is a top of the line cheap card.
As for your.... windows issue, I would suggest a more.... legal version of windows, you don't want to cheap out on your operating system. OTHERWISE http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10284086
