I already have read it. I'm a member of a forum that is hosted by it's administrator without a donation system even working and they have almost 600,000 members. They have a lite surf option, but you can use avatars and signatures.

besides, when I'm reading posts, I don't want to have half the page filled up with random pictures. I like it without the sigs.

It's almost 200,000 members with any number of guests (it's about 1800 as I write this). I don't know about that other forum you're a member of but I'm guessing it isn't nearly as active as this one is. No, it wouldn't "explode" it but it would make it extremely laggy.
