Beware of Fake E-mails
We have recently noticed a number of fake e-mails being circulated telling players they are eligible to participate in the Guild Wars 2 Closed Beta.
Please be aware that these mails are phishing attempts to get your account information, and players should not reply to them.
ArenaNet or NCsoft employees will never ask for your password.

I do have to ask though why the euro's get the attention for security and not the main guildwars.com page? I'm not trying to put one country against another so please don't turn this into that. But I noticed on the EU page that not only do they have a link to a security software to the left-hand side (yes it's an advertisement but still) and then this news posting that's on their front page but not on the main gw.com page. I just wanted to note the emphasis and difference between these 2 pages (maybe the updating of the main gw.com page though is just a little slower).

Thanks for the warning. I'd put that in annoucement or sticky it until it stops.

Thanks for the 'heads up' Inde. I'll be sure to post that on our guild's website.

The content on the EU site and US site is added by different people afaik.
But this message should be on the announcments on the logon screen tbh..

Thanks Inde, I'll have to let my guildies know, and anybody who asks in-game.
Also, I agree with Jiao Yang. Anet seem to rather lax at getting important news to the login screen (but then, people don't read it either).

I'll have my guild spam the warning in all major towns.
Thnx for the warning.

Even better, do not use the same email address for forums that you use for game registrations. Then you know that any email you get to the "forum" email address is crap.

heh use simple reasoning
ANET ALREADY KNOWS YOURE PASSWORD why should they bother asking YOU for it

But yeah, sad attempt to scam ppl's account imo.
Like, there is low scams, and then there is this. But then again, the people that actually give away their info do deserve to get scammed. For lacking any reasoning in they "common sence" part in their brain...

What is the hackers source to get to these email adresses? How do they know who is playing gw ? Are they using Anet's login info? Or are they using email adresses used for registering on fansites like gwguru?
Bowstring Badass
It because more european players in guild wars.
Just another a "gimmez ur acountz".

The European site and the American site are totally different... So I get the American news in RSS and the European I just check every day.
It's sad, it's not so hard to have a bit of consistancy...
On topic, if you check the "players, protect your accounts" button in the loginscreen, it already says that Anet would never ask for your login. Though being selected for a closed beta might make you over-excited, ending up in doing stupid things -_-

Its been added to the American GW page. The announcements tab in the login screen also, more or less, reflects this.

It would seem prudent to report these E-mails if we get them, but who to?

Um, what's the email for the British extension of the FBI Cyber crime division? I'm not getting these emails (yet), but I'd like to know.
Or you know, the British equivalent if the FBI hasn't made it here yet. I'm sure they will, we're practically part of the US...

Just to let you know - www.guildwars.com does actually have that on the news listings. It's just not stand-outish like on the European site.
In fact, if you believe the date - this was posted on www.guildwars.com 1st - the date is 17th June while on European site it's 18th June.. Also, the one on gw.com does not have it's own page.. all you get is the tiny window at the bottom when you hover over the link for it.
and this kind of scam is pretty common around the time of game sequals - people are waiting for the sequal to come out, hoping for a beta.. and *bamn* fake e-mails telling ppl to go to sites with keyloggers, or to enter current user login information to sign up for beta, etc.
Harsh... but when you can make money out of ppl's account's... it's bound to happen ;/
Sad fact is.. people do fall for it.. else they wouldn't bother doing it. just like people are *still* falling for the Nigerian scams.. even after all the information about them, all the tv programs showing them for what they are...etc .. ppl still fall for them *shrugs*

A piece of information that'll interest a lot of people, you can report scams/phishing websites using the Google Safe Browsing service:
http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/report_phish/
This service is, for example, used by Firefox3 for its "favicon" feature and to block confirmed phishing/scams website (see details here). If these tools (Google Safe Browsing and FF3) become widespread, it could be the very end of these security attacks. Spread the word.
(more scary facts: hacked computers are used to send viagra emails that provide some scamming companies with up to $150 million a year! source; do not let your computer hacked into, do not buy cheap and untrustworthy products over the Internet!)
I hope Regina will be able to answer Inde's original question:

Woah! Those People who are doing this are going way to far and this is not funny at all I didn't even know about this until I saw this thread. ANet needs to post this up somewhere where more people can see it.

You can forward those emails to [email protected] along with any other scam/spam email you receive. Outlook and probably some other email clients will let you set rules, so if you receive a spam email its automatically forwarded to [email protected]
