The Guide for GWx2
Snograt
Hah, now I can see what was going on. Instead of pointing gwx2 to the second copy of gw.exe, you were pointing it towards gwx2!
Glad you got it sorted

Thanks it is not only that I got my imageshack account straighted out.

I think this got nerfed.
I ran them the first time perfectly, they both opened, but that was like a month ago. Now I ran both clients and updated. Then only 1 window opened. After, I added -setup and then re-did everything. 2 clients open, but the other closes.

You must open one first by itself after updating to minimize it to windows. After that then u should be fine to run both.

Have you re-copied gw.exe from the original directory to the copy? That needs doing after every update.
MrGuildBoi
Thanks Snog, that worked well.

I PM'd manitoba to put that in the OP - there's also a thread somewhere where someone wrote a batch file to automate the process - saves precious seconds ^^
Sir Patch
is this program safe to use still, like will it steal my password or something? is the website provided as the begging post still safe? ty
Messy
It's safe.
I'm trying to figure out what is it I need to do after the update..... I'm reading... but it ain't clicking
Nevermind......... got it

BTW, I found out you don't need to (well I didn't) minimize the screen before running GWx2.

Mine can
manitoba1073
Yeap and thats why its recomended to do that.
Just like for some odd reason I dont have to copy my GW.exe to my second folder it does it automatically with out using anything else but GWx2_4.1.
It just depends on the waves of fate lol.

I really wish we could get hold of the programmer to congratulate him/her.

I heard that this program used to have a password sniffer. Is that true?

anyone having trouble with this program after the big update this weekend? A buddy and I haven't been able to use it even after doing all the tricks after an update. Just seeing if the problem is with mine or with the program/GW.
Thanks
Thanks

Are there any comp reqs for running 2 GWs?
Snograt
A recent, at least DX9.0c compatible graphics card and as much memory as possible. 2GB as a bare minimum, I'd say. Could probably get away with less if you cripple GW - -noshaders -dx8 -nosound.

Little Rahxephon
I got a similiar problem..Been using this for two weeks now and it worked perfectly..but ever since the last night's update, it opens only 1 client..is it just me (working fine for everyone else?) or something got changed?
// Nevermind, I just read another post where someone said this:
" It's an odd thing, but periodically you need to copy the gw.exe file from the original folder to overwrite the one in gw2.
I don't know why this is - just sometimes it won't load both clients and copying over the .exe makes it work again.
(Note - that's the gw.exe, NOT the gw.dat )"
it helped

You're welcome.

Also getting the I/O 32 error.
Followed every single step and read every single post in here.
(Copying the gw.exe to the 2nd folder didn't solve the problem.)
I do understand it right, though, that I have to start GW normally first, minimize it (windowed), and THEN start gwx2 with normal GW already running?
If so, that only produces aforementioned I/O 32 error.
If not, it will only start one GW instance...

No, starting GW first, then trying to start gwx2 will ALWAYS throw up the I/O32 error. The correct way is to just start gwx2, so you've set something up wrong.
Spaced Invader
Not very likely, triple-checked and redid everything.
I rather suspect a lack of free ram to be the reason (WinXp, only 1gb and also running a lot of other stuff in the background). Read somewhere that it won't start two instances if there's not enough ram available.

You want to copy and paste the .bak file as well as the GW.exe after every update from your original GW folder to where you have GWx2.

i can't remember what error i was getting when mine wasn't working properly, but here's what i did. i used the shortcut with -set up command and while i had that window open i accidentally set both client paths to the same file. i'm not sure if i'm explaining this right.
both paths said ....Guild Wars\Gw.exe instead of the second one reading ...Guild Warz\Gw.exe.
when i tried to run the program it popped up with a "client paths must be different" or something like that. so i changed it to the way it was supposed to be. after i did that, it worked just fine. so now whenever i get that error, this is what i do.
1. i make sure i've copied all the files properly, if that isn't the issue
2. then i make the paths the same
3. run the program
4. at that point i get the message to change the clients, so i do
5. restart the program and it always works fine for me.
that's your problem. you start GW then put it in "tiled" mode (won't work in full-screen), then close GW entirely. then you start GWx2.

@Spaced - try copying the .exe over one more time. It's possible you may have started it for the first time right after an update. You could be right about the RAM, though. It does gobble it rather eagerly.

^I think Mani said he does that though I guess he will answer as soon as he is back.
Snograt
I think he probably did say that. It's just a convenience really - would help if there's a major update to the .dat but it's really not necessary with all the minor "tweak" downloads we usually get.
kiddster
So yeah after my virus prot was doing scanning my computer files I saw something with the name infostealer.(smoething) seems like this would be the only program that would fit with what the name was. I was warned by a friend before that it had some kind of password sniffer. Has anyone else found this yet?
Snograt
Due to the way gwx2 works (interrupting graphics calls, I believe), many AV products throw up a false-positive.
Gwx2 is clean - we've had many scares from it over the years, but all of them have proved false. Just make sure you download it from the official site - http://www.gwx2.co.nr/

is there a way to control both at the same time (e.g multi box with warriors using same builds etc)
dicksbain
For what it worth, I tossed together a quick bat file to handle updates as I was getting sick of manually copying files every few days...
Update paths accordingly....
Update paths accordingly....
Code:
@echo off REM GWx2 Updater v1.01 echo Launching Guild Wars . . . start "" "C:\Games\Guild Wars\gw.exe" echo Wait for any updates to complete . . . pause taskkill /IM gw.exe CHOICE /N /M "Were there new updates? Press Y or N" if errorlevel 2 goto end echo Copying new updated files to 2nd GW Copy . . . xcopy "C:\Games\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" "E:\Guild Wars" /Y xcopy "C:\Games\Guild Wars\Gw.dat" "E:\Guild Wars" /Y goto end :end echo Launching dual GWs. . . start "" "C:\Games\Guild Wars\GWx2_4.1.exe" exit
Snograt
Very nice - just open Notepad, copy and paste that into it, alter the paths so that it matches your install, save as whatever.bat and you're good to go!
Thanks for that, dicksbain - and apologies for the idiots' guide above

I had problems connecting on both clients, tried copying the original gw.exe into my 2nd gw file and it worked.
Thanks for the tip!

Worked for me too. Thanks!
MrGuildBoi
Nice dicksbain, but you don't need to copy the gw.dat And could you explain what you need to replace (for people that have gw in different directories?) Like which one is your gw and your copied gw
