I'm returning to the game after over two years, and my storage (and inventory of some of my chars) is full of stuff, mostly old stuff from 2+ years ago.
I've already figured out that "perfect" weapons are worth a lot. But my sense is that aside from stuff like minipets, Ecto, dye, crafting materials, and some mods, almost everything else that drops is pretty worthless. Is this right?
In other words, should I vendor all of my:
- Non-max damage golds and purples
- Non-max damage firey dragon swords (used to be cool, when the game started)
- Max damage white/purple/golds that are not inscribable
Or do I salvage the non-perfect mods? Are they worth anything?
I don't want to throw out anything valuable, but I'm starting to think that this stuff is now just junk.
What stuff is worth keeping?

Check the buy/sell forum and the price check stickies for a general idea of what still has value. No one can give you a unconditional answer.
It also depends on how much time you want to spend standing in Kamadan, LA or KC selling things.

Max damage white/purple/golds that are not inscribable
the golds can be worth alot is they are 15^50 or +5 energy

- Non-max damage golds and purples - merch
- Non-max damage firey dragon swords (used to be cool, when the game started) - merch
- Max damage white/purple/golds that are not inscribable - Old-school (i.e. non-inscribable) golds that have a useful base mod (15^50, HCT 20%, etc) are still valuable. Some people even collect them. I don't buy them, but I did keep a non-inscribable plain Longbow I got the other day because it had Energy+5 as a base mod - it would have been valuable once upon a time.

Keep items that are all of the following:
Salvage items that have perfect mods you want. (And possibly imperfect mods for heroes when perfect mods are pricey -- example: 20% enchanting scythe pieces are rare, so give the heroes imperfect ones.)
Merc the rest.
- max
- good skin
- inscribable OR has a good inherent mod (ie 15^50 or the like)

Merchant food: non-max weapons, wether if they are gold, purple or blue. Also don't bother much with the runes, most are worthless.
FDSs: Merch food all of them, except the Req9's and below, which are max of course. Wether if they're inscribable or not matters little.
Non-inscribable stuff: Mods that are still worth something are the +5 energy mods for martial weapons, the 15^50 on martial weapons, and HCT 20% of the attribute on staves. Don't even bother on shields/wands/offhands that don't have two modifiers, these are the only ones worth something (and they're very rare).
Not only that, but you'll find that most skins are worthless, even if they have the mods stated above. Try to save only Req10 and below stuff.
Non-perfect upgrades will be hard to sell. From my experience, I've only managed to sell +29hp Axe/Sword upgrade. Most elemental damage/lenghtens "X" duration by 33% are also worthless. You could as well post in the Price Check forum here in Guru and ask about the stuff.
