Seriously, how are we supposed to answer? Unless you have maxed cash in storage and on chars, why "invest" in anything? And if you are maxed and need someplace to put the cash, almost any "investment" can lose money as well as make it depending on when you buy and sell.

Obsideon looks might be a good one, with all the ectos being farmed people will be buyign shards for FoW (proberly)

You can buy more ecto's, hoping SF will get nerfed and ecto prices will rise again.
You can sell your ecto's and hope the price doesn't go up.
You can also buy some high-end minipets, they seem to have a reasonable consistant value, but you never know when ANet is going to release more minipets, in any case there probably will be some rare mini's tied to the GWG GvG Contest.

Shards however might take a drop again. They were ~1k not too long ago.

I would dump ectos and buy either black dyes, lock picks or something that will stay rare but knowing anet who knows. I dumped my ectos for black dye and gold a long time ago.

Ectos are not a good idea. The actual economy can be described as the following (concerning ectos) :

Use your money for something you want. It's just sitting there not giving you any sort of epeen. For a long time I sat on three accounts packed to the brim with gold, and stacks of ecto in each of them. In the past couple months I have spent all of it, and you know what I hear now? "Wow, you're so rich - how'd you make all that money?"
Seriously, what's the fun in keeping your epeen to yourself? Pick up some nice things with that cash and quit worryin'. That money sitting there isn't doing you any good.

Right now, I am on the verge of converting all of my plat to ecto. With the lowest prices in the history of Guild Wars, it only seems to be going lower for the near future. For the distant future (i.e. SF nerfing or favor running out) ecto will eventually stabilize at 5.5-6k, and when you can buy them now for 3.3-3.5k, I'd say its worth investing. An SF nerf is almost inevitable, same with faction running out.

Hold on to them for a few months. Let the hype wear off of "THE SKY IS FALLING! SELL IT ALL NOW!" and you'll probably have doubled your profit. Especially if you buy even more now.

Funny that, people solo'd UW long before Shadowform was buffed with many different builds, ectos dropped in value, people got tired of farming those builds, ectos went back up. I don't hear anyone screaming Waaaah! E/Me ruined my bank account!
Nerf 600 smiters, necros, ele's, most all the derv skills, and half the rit skills so noone can farm anymore THEN we have a level playing field....and one boring damn game that noone plays any more.
Ironically it is the same principal as in real life. Put all your investment into one sole commodity and when the market for that commodity falls out people piss and moan about how unfair it is.

If we go back to old favor system (HoH battles), it wont do us much good. People will just change districts from America to Euro or vice versa or to Korean servers!?! (since they have unlimited changing now). So in essence, Old Favor = new favor.

Until they nerf SF ectos will continue to lose value. When (?if) they nerf it ectos will regain some of their original value. Since none of us here actually know for a fact that the nerf is coming, it is kinda hard to give advice atm regarding what to do with ectos.
I am holding on to my stacks atm coz honestly I dont really care what happens at this stage of the game's life, and apparently neither does anet; otherwise the chaos plains farm would have been nerfed weeks ago.
