Making "honor" threads on guru is dishonorable.
I think what you're trying to get at isn't honor, but more not-being-an-asshat. I would say that I personally try to not-be-an-asshat to people, but 99% of pugs are asshats. It's the same as a person who scams someone for 1-2k on a run. Internet invulnerability, people will be jerks as much as they can.

If the level of honor displayed in Guild Wars is our future, we as a race are so done.
Friend wanted me to running CoF over the weekend so they could make some money. Told everyone if anyone tried to scam at the end I would refund everyone’s money and leave. On our first run I completed the last group before the fire traps and noticed one person with Chinese character for a name was not with us. I ran back to him just so I could pull a group undead to him and the person starts running away (apparently just waiting for me to finish). Was hoping to get him to 60 dp then I could finish the chest and they get sent back to Doomlore when we leave. . I told the group the run was over and they can thank the person standing back at the start.
On the same day my wife, playing trader, noticed a player wanting to sell two stack of feather at 6.5k ea. She opened trade with the player and they put in two single feathers. She tells them that they had made a mistake and that was not two stacks. The player cancels trade then start to send insults because my wife had wasted his/her time.
I really hate saying this since I have friends in real life from other countries but ever since the walls have been let down the number of scammers I have encountered has increased.

Few days ago I joined a 5/8 guild group who was looking for 3 players. They wanted those 3 players to have con sets. The other two didn't have them, I had 3 and said "NP, I'll use them but would like people to chip in with 800g per con set". The five guildies concluded that "there's always a freeloader out for profit" and kicked me out of the group. People like these are the reason I play PvE on American servers. Their logic always makes me lol. |
I use the cons free of charge, no matter the length of what we are doing I will supply all the cons free of charge. (donations of money or mats accepted but never demanded)
I know no matter how many I use I will make more then enough money/mats to replace them and still have a nice profit to set aside for future use.
It fixes alot of useless arguing that comes with others those who think cons cost to much money or that other players should pay the full cost of the cons.

Interesting so far. You clearly see which people know what I'm talking about and those that have no idea at all or don't wanne know, some even try to make it a joke. That's fine and sometimes even funny. Every circus has to have its clowns.
If I say I'm gonna put the cons up, I will put them up. It seems though a lot of players don't have honour and scam all over the place with cons, materials and what not, hence the title: Do you have any honour left?
Saying it's just a game is a an excuse to get away with that sort of behaviour, it doesn't really help the comunity or pugs in general. Some of you (yes Mr BlackSephir ) know how hard I debated in the '7 heroes' topic to get 7 heroes. Yet I'm still silly enough to pug and try and shoot the bull with a pug party, have some fun, but some of you are making that extremely difficult.
We have a saying here that goes something like this: Don't do something to someone else if you wouldn't like that to be done to yourself in the first place. I'm wondering what the English expression is.
If the concept is unknown to you, at least this topic will show you that honour (UK) is the same as honor (US), if you didn't know that already ofcourse.

I'm sure the Cult of Anonymity that people use for internet jerkish behavior could be simply solved with their game avatars actually being a digital represenation of that person ie: you get to see their face when speaking, they have to look you physically in the eye when they're being a dick/honourable/nice.
Real world accountability would solve all problems behind pugs.

I honestly don't know why people ask others to bring cons and will not buy the cons themself or use any sets they may have in storage.
It's just a game >_< I know I would use cons if I had to without asking people to pay whatsoever, afterall, it's my choice to use them.
meh, people take the game too seriously, it's meant to be for fun, it's not life or death

During the crashing prices of the armbraces i ran DoA a lot on my monk, made some money and got my staff.... Recently i went back there on my Rit to get an offhand and to get my LB title up a bit... the change is astounding... Somewhere in the last few months people decided it was ok for the monks never to pay for a con set... to which i was confused as i always paid for one on my monk! And the amount of leavers, leechers and people who point blank refuse to pay for cons is incrediable, i lost more con sets than i can count to groups insisting i used first and the one time i dont is the time the whole party slanders me as a noob and rage quits!
Yes people are out to make money there but it shouldnt be at the expense of everyone else - especially when many of the players are so poor its a wonder they managed to get throught nightfall at all! I never managed to do mallyx without less than 3 attempts with a party XD
Sufficed to say i ended up quiting halfway through my farming and brough the rest of the gems i needed and went back to the much friendlier LB/SS runs!
BLAH!

Remember, it may be "just a game", but most of the time, the way people act here, they act IRL, or would if they could get away with it. Karma's a bitch. Oh, to those who said the US has less honor...tell that to the French and Germans who discriminate against Muslims in their countries, the raiders in Darfur, the EU's racist look towards Turkey, the myriad countries raping the Congo, the Chinese with Tibet... the US isn't alone in this deficit. It's a HUMAN problem. |
Did the OP do the right thing? Sure, why not? While I can't find fault in what he did, I don't see it as a commendable action either.

The title and closing sentence talk about honor, but the majority of the post is about how two people refused to pay for a conset and how you were nice enough to use the conset anyway. Being nice isn't the same as having honor. |
When he used the Conset anyway, one could say he acted honorably by not accepting payment for the use of something he did not clear with the group first. I kind of disagree with this though, as I wouldn't consider it dishonorable to accept payments after the fact, only to insist on payment.
Savio
Using consets isn't honorable; helping out the team is helping yourself, unless you want to try to convince me that monks are the most honorable profession. Returning the money is good and all, but the focus of the thread isn't the returning of the money, it's the usage of the consumables.

To be honest you are a hypocrite, because you did indeed respond. No one gives a damn about post count because they realize this is a game forum and that you shouldn't get too into it obviously you do because you bring up silly things such as honor. ::thinks some people need to realize gw isn't real life and need to get outside moar::

This is indeed a game forum. A game played by humans online with interaction doing missions, trade whatever. The game is part of real life as we use real time to play it on a real life pc, yet we play with our character in a virtual world. Your actions and deeds ingame are an extension of yourself unless you wanne roleplay as a crook for example. You're human so you have a brain which means you make decisions ingame just like in real life.
So you're saying if I go outside more, I can scam and do whatever crap to other players which indirectly has an effect on the comunity as players don't trust each other. Just forget about silly things like honour, it's just a game afterall.
Must be a fun game to play in if everybody thinks like you. They should design a 'Far West' mmo, where cowboys scamming, leeching and playing as dirty as possible are the way to go. Pew pew

I think finding honor in a game is hard but possible. I don't use the internet as a means to act any differently than I would in real life. I despise cheating, lying and scamming and I don't engage in those practices in game or in real life.
My word in this virtual world is as good as my word in real life, which I realize to most means nothing, but to me means all.

Tx Messy for the expression and your input. You hit the nail on top there like some others did in their own way. Respect to you guys.

After having so many people rage quit for WHATEVER reason early on in elite dungeons, I NEVER am the first to use cons anymore.
Even my own alliance members have randomly ditched during UW and whatnot. So yeah. Good on you I guess, I just don't have the money to use cons first anymore.

Tbh i cant see real honor in this,
2 jerks in group fail to pay then when somone uses a con. set they just turn it up a notch.
you give money back to people that paid and used your own.
I see something nice but really just seems more or less like a typical PuG.
But the whole thing about keeping your word?
Since the whole team didnt keep theres I dont see the point as to why you should yours, yes a few ruined it but there you go, you did gain the benifits of the cons. too
i may be missing somthing, i pressed reply and left it for an hour till i responded, playing games+ other windows open.

It sucks that most people don't have common sense, but whaddaya expect on the internet really (see pic above). Can't do much about it. See pic above.
I've noticed, however, that people rage less over VoIP - it's more direct than chat but still less direct than face-to-face conversations so there are some who will STILL go nuts, but IMO people are less asses over it. In 3 years of PUGging, I've had ONE guy, outta all the people invited over our Vent/TS servers, that raged at my group - was a guildie too, he got kicked out of the guild, but we moved him into another Vent channel and he spent 5 minutes screaming to himself .
I think much less people would rage at others if they were in the same room, house, even neighborhood... so I laugh at people who try to insult me. Or if I'm bored, I fight back for the lulz.

Those whom would invoke the law against their fellow man is a fool or a coward. Anyone who would hide behind law is both. A man will say to his assailant,"If you wound me, I shall kill you. If you kill me, all is forgivin". Such is the way of honor.
-Omerta
I agree, I do not see how this has anything to do with honor.
There are good players, few in number, that are not potty mouthed, spoiled brats and then there is the latter. I have turned my local chat off long ago. I do not PUG anymore. I am much happier for it.

I am a firm believer in the "Eye for an eye" approach. I save what honor I have for real life, thanks very much. Its an extremely cynical, unforgiving and at times completely irrational gaming atmosphere in GW and I really dont like to waste my time on insecure 12 year olds who feel more important by ripping on other people for the most trivial reasons.
Having said that, when I DO come across nice people in game, I make sure to add them to friends lists, keep in touch with them, and on occasion if they ask for help and I'm free, help out. But no.."honour" in Guild Wars is a bit of an outmoded concept at this point, I think.

Consumable Sets are always a group breaker. Thats why Guild groups are so much preferrable to me, anyway. Not that I do elite areas anyway.

Ok, I want to make clear again that my OP was not meant to be about me and my so called nice deed. It would have been wiser to use 'a friend of mine' instead of 'I' in my OP, but lying is not an honourable thing to do, is it?
I'm not Mr. nice guy, I couldn't stand those two who I see as dishonorable and I sure wouldn't wanted to be nice to them. I wanted to get the hell outta there. By calling me a scammer they touched my honour. My pride prevented the two fair players (who paid and wanted to pay again after) to have their honour (the dignity and fairness that they wanted to pay).
The thread title is directed at you, it's not about me. Are you like those two that called me a scammer or are you like the two fair players? (retorical question) I despise you if you're one of the first group. If you are one of the latter, I salute you, because you are a man of your word just like I am. It goes beyond money and con sets.
After spending several ours reading dictionaries etc., honour seems to have plenty of meanings and can be relative depending on culture etc.
A few quotes caught my attention though:
"We laugh at honour and are shocked to find traitors in our midst." — C. S. Lewis, The Abolition of Man
"Mine honour is my life, both grow in one. Take honour from me, and my life is done." — William Shakespeare, Richard II
"Rather fail with honour than succeed by fraud" — Sophocles
Anyway, peace out and hf.

Why does EVERYONE and their mother have to use consumables nowadays?
Is it not simply easier (if all they seem to do is cause conflicts) to..not bother with them?
It's not like they're a GW staple, after all: last I checked we'd been happily plodding along for a couple of years+ without them.
