Game Events Timer Needed!!!!
kazi_saki
I just logged in to Shing Jea Monastery and BOOM!
when does it start?
has it started yet?
nub stfu
does it start in 2hrs?
no 4hrs?
when does the event start?
......and on and on and on
People keep asking and asking!
GW guys! Please put an in-game timer for special events to avoid the time zome confusion and all the question spam!
It'll also help players keep track of missions and stuff so more people can attend and enjoy!
BTW, if this has been suggested already by some guy, consider this more support

My suggestion is turn off local chat. Even it such a feature was implimented, people would still ask, since people are idiots.
Clocks ftw.
Clocks ftw.

We have both Wikis, the announcements and multiple forums.
I agree that people don't read the Wiki much - your average player barely needs it anyways, as they don't usually care for high-end weapon drops, they sell or use whatever they can, they don't farm, they don't vanquish, don't do elite areas... but they should look at it anyways, IMO. So I'd say promote the wiki more.
The announcements... seriously, how many people read it? IT'S WRITTEN AS YOU LOG ON. However, if you're like me and use the -email -password target commands, you skip them as you log automatically. Then again, I assume (maybe badly) that whoever knows these commands have enough brains to look at the wiki and are probably forums roamers anyways. They're aware.
Forums... well if you browse it a bit you should see the threads about it.
The problem is that all those tools are highly underestimated by the community, thus why you see so many "WHEN DOSE TEH EVENT STARTS PLZZZZZ????" spams, over and over again...
Solution: Promote those tools.

but really though, its not hard to make people aware of the in-game timer, just have it announced in the log-in screen.
turning off in-game chat in shing jea is losing out on the idiocy and comedy that is GW though
edit:
Kusandaa, I don't use those "-email,-password" commands but i understand what you mean. Word will spread though and eventually people will be aware...i hope.

Even if you add an NPC to explain it, they won't talk to it.
I have seen people asking something again and agan, even after being answered multiple time.
There's nothing we can do.

I mean, Favor of the Gods has an in-game timer. They could do something like that quick and simple (hopefully).
If it doesn't stop, it'll lessen the spam and confusion. There will always be idiots but we can turn them into endangered species

From the point of view of time differences I think that is a fair idea. Yes I know one just has to work out the difference between local and whichever time-zone GW people are, but a small timer would be quicker for people like me who forget that BST is GMT +1, gets me every damn time and I'm from the UK. In fact I usually work it out by about October just before it goes back to GMT again
As pointed out though not in the log-in because many people auto-log and miss those, an in-game switch */event* would work for me please A-Net

Sounds as easy as /age, /deaths, and /favor. The timer will auto show up when you enter the town(s) of the event (when there is an event).

If you live in the modern age, you have things called clocks and you understand things called timezones. GW is on PST, should be enough said. Anyone who still doesn't get it doesn't deserve an answer to their questions.

I agree, it gets so annoying hearing everyone keep spamming and asking when an event starts when all they have to do is read the Guild Wars website or Wiki. So I think clocks would be very useful. /signed
Molock
If hey added a /event command people would still ask in local chat. The only way to make the idiots understand would be to have a jumbo sized timer in the middle of the screen that says "Event begins in x". Which would be very annoying..
/signed anyway for those who aren't morons.

People are morons. Even with people spamming "the event starts in 1 hour" with that message at the top of party search display and in trade chat... people continue to ask "does the event start soon" every 15 seconds.
Clock, timer, a giant flashing "IT HASN'T STARTED YET" in neon lettering.... whatever. The kinds of people who will spam questions about the event rather then reading about it on the website will continue to ask questions.
If this suggestion was about actually informing people... then it would be helpful to new players (what are victory tokens, why do I need them, what is this event?). But this suggestion is just about not having to get annoyed by the spam in chat. In which case, if it annoys you just turn it off. I don't think people /signing this actually want to help people, they are just annoyed by the chat.

/notsigned because it would detract from the enjoyment I get from watching people flip out when I ask "is the hat guy here yet?"
Edit: Actually, they'd probably flip out more if I had a timer and a still asked the question.... so I guess thats a /signed intead.

I try to be patient, and I answer peoples questions when I have the opportunity. Heck, I even tracked one guy down from these forums to answer his questions. But when you answer the same exact question ("Is the hat guy here yet???" "when does he come??") twenty times in the space of five minutes, it sort of detracts from the enjoyment you get from attending the festival.
Though I have to agree with a lot of people; no matter what they do, there will still be some fellow spamming "Is the hat guy here yet??"

/signed. It's a real pain knowing when events start when the times given aren't yours locally. I know we can 'work it out' but it's a whole lot of extra effort that could be avoided, along with the aforementioned spam if something this simple were implemented.
That way we could probably avoid cockups like the one with Gaile's goodbye party where the event wasn't started when expected. If there's a countdown, even if it's different to the advertised time, there can be no confusions.

FF_Timmeh
but it realy has to be a FREAKIN BIG CLOCK so every 14 year old nub can see it.
but even if implemented i would say they will still ask
"WHAT IS THIS CLOCK FOR TELL ME PLZ !!!!!!!!!!??????????????"
so the only way is turn off local chat (my current solution)
or to implement a report or kick funktion everytime someone types in more then 3 ??? or !!! together ^^
or capslockkick like in irc channels....

Guna
people do read wiki a lot but its just to get some crappy builds....
if they would read the really important parts they wouldnt ask stupid questions that often...
i agree with kazi, there should be a clock for those who have problems adding or subtracting hours in their time zone but not som clock thats visible in the interface.
i think some command like /event or /time would be good cuz some players dont need to see it all the time...

The countdown timer (gj azazel. made things easier ) does make everything sooo much simpler and does not even need to take into account time zones and other technicalities. And I agree with Guna that it should be done as a /event or /time command for simplicity.
upier
What would be fun would be to link the GW time with the OS-clock and then list the starting time of the event based on the OS-clock.
Operative 14
Or even if all they did was have a simple clock down in the corner that showed PST time, and possibly local time next to it. Then you could just tell people it starts at 12:00 on their PST clock.
T'would also keep those "You have been playing for 10 hours. For the love of god, please take a break" messages from being such a surprise.

Just lie them. I lyed some spammers. They still believe the hats come today.

lol. gj Rikio
anywayz, I hope the devs implemented this for the next big event, and if not, then hopefully they do it in GW2.
And if A-net did put a visual PST clock, ppl can just do the math from there (-7 PST or whatever they choose next).

Actually besides the Events idea I sugest just a Server time/date based on (PDT/PST) and it is added near the ping
button would make so much easer for those of us not in that timezone or trying to work out
who has savings time or not that always gets me confused.
You would just mouse over it and see what time it is there and you know your own time already.
OR when it says you been playing for 1 or 2 etc hours just add the server time on the end.
Edit
Doh just read thats simmiler to what Operative 14 said.
move on nothing to see here. lol
