I got a question about GW on Linux.
I want to install Ubuntu on my laptop, i know Guild Wars won't run on MAC or Linux so i want to try it through wine.

I don't know if this is possible and if it works, doesn't wine act like a third party program?

Though I don't know for sure how GW will run on Wine, I can assure you that it's not considered a 3rd party program at all. It runs below Windows, so if you have a legit Windows, you're out of trouble.

Well, running GW in linux works just fine, though I guess you need a GeForce card, because the ATI drivers are just plain crap.

I think there's an article about this on the official GW wiki, and an article in Wine's AppDB

so guild wars works fine under linxux without the use of wine?

got an 8800GT so that's not going to be a problem

@traeskapa:
i found a wiki page indeed:
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild_Wars_on_Wine
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild...on_Wine/Ubuntu

If all your playing is GW i guess you can be "ok" with Wine
However if ur going fulltime linux and want to game more u might wanna look into Cedega
The new Cedega 6.1 is in Beta atm and has lots of new games and bugfixes making it worth the few bucks it costs to buy

i run Hardy/Cedega 6.0.5

It also works well for me. I'm running Gentoo 2008.0 with the latest stable Nvidia drivers on Portage, using wine-0.9.61. The actual game gets slow at points, but I still need to do any tweaking.

It's easiest to just download the setup file from Anet's Guild Wars web site, install that, then copy the Gw.dat from your Windows installation if possible (if not, then try a -image or just download things as you go). Also, you do NOT need any sort of installation of Windows to run wine. The only thing a Windows installation would do for wine is provide DLLs to copy and use.

Wine is an excellent tool to use. However, your best bet would be to dual boot from XP/Vista for gaming, and use Linux for everything else.

Make sure you have updated kernel systems, as the old ones had that horrific key creation issue.

I've had success running Guild Wars in Wine. I love Wine. If they made a Wine plushie, I would buy it.

Rahja's right, though. I stopped running Guild Wars in Linux, instead setting up a dual boot system with Windows XP. (I have to swap between either operating system on a regular basis. It's easier for me just to dual boot the silly things.)

And in case you're wondering--I ran GW in Wine on my laptop with its little GeForce Go integrated whatever-number-it-is. While running Compiz Fusion. Here's a screenshot... so know that it works.
