Microphone doesn't work.

Title says it, any microphone I hook to this computer doesn't work. They do work on another computer, so it's not a problem with the mics.

What are the possible reasons for this, from configurations to loose wires, and how can it be fixed?

And no, it's not something with my vent configurations.

Thanks in advance.

You havn't given us any information thats gunna help us help you.

What sound card do you use?

Do you use realtek HD audio?

Is your sound integrated?

Are you using a usb mic? Or the pink plug in one?

Are you using vista? If so have you checked the mic compatibility with vista?

I'm awaiting responses on this with interest, because it seems to me that something as simple as a microphone is a major pain to get working sometimes. It really should be a no-brainer :/

ummmm. hmm. my sound is not working atm at all. umm... first i suggest you double click the little sound symbol on the bottom right hand side of your monitor. then check if the microphone is muted or slided all the way down.

If your sound card comes with its own program to control sound, check it and see if microphone boost is checked/on. Also check the dB level if you can.

(make sure your using classic view, only terrible people use category view)
If not, go to start -> settings -> control panel -> system -> hardwarer tab -> click device manager.

find your sound card, right click properties and make sure its working properly.

disable the sound card, then re-enable it

if that doesnt work:
uninstall your soundcard, your computer should restart, then it should automatically reinstall itself on start up

if that doesnt work:
right click it, and click update driver.

if that doesnt work, I don't know how to help you, sorry

I can not say for 100% but I beleive AC97 sound cards are onboard cards.
