Dead is when a game gets old and starts to lose it's sheen and falls behind the curve.
Look at all the people that are playing Diablo 2 right now. That game's been dead for about 7 years now.

They are smart, just adding more things to promote grind and fuel their pay to play, who woulda thought. An attempt to keep the long time players locked in. Not that I give a crap about WoW, a next gen with the same old grind of games well before, graphics/characters appeal to kiddies still in diapers too, start em early=more profit, the gem of advertisement/appeal.
