Friend requests
Unreal Havoc
I have found the ever increasing amount of random PMs from people I don't even know to be rather frustrating. Mostly these peope are people who have seen my name on Guild of the Week on the main website and have added me to their friends list so they can contact me later. Personally other people outside of my friends list, being able to see whether I'm online or not is, to me, an invasion of privacy. It's not feasible to go offline because then my friends cannot contact me and neither can people I wish to trade with or who wish to trade with me, etc.
So instead why not make it a friend request rather than a straight add friend and send a notification to the person being added notifying them and asking if they approve of the request in a similar way to say MSN or Xbox Live? My ignore list should be for people who are generally bad behaved, not people who spam me with PMs because the friends system isn't kept more private.

Agreed, the friends system as it is now easily allows stalking, i don't feel very comfortable with it nor like it...
Lawrence Chang
lol stalking? its not like they are jacking off to your real picture or something.
What they should do is increase the block list.
What they should do is increase the block list.

My ignore list has been full for >2 years. It is very hard to find enough space to fit annoying ppl on your ignore list the way it stands atm.

Totally agree on this idea.
Daisuko
Or you could convince all your friends to run guild wars through steam, set GW as "offline" or "Do not disturb" and just shift+tab to whisper. A little more annoying, but it gives you privacy.
Edit: you could just tell them to go away, be a total ass. they'd probably leave you alone.

What they should do is just add a "friends only" option in the drop-box on the friends list. That'd probably be a lot easier than implementing a friend-request system.

How does eveyone have a full ignore list?
Do you all go around and make enemies or something? If you need to /ignore someone, do it and take them off 2 weeks later.

I make friends quickly, and enemies faster. I tend to piss off people quite thoroughly because apparently people have problems with me giving their suggestions on changing their builds, because god knows they're perfect. Using "I am the strongest" and wanding people? Yeah, epic combination right there. Don't bring a useful spell or anything. HB monks with standard resurrects over resurrection chant or some such? Inexcusable. Just plain stupidity, such as being a Minion master and using skills like vampiric bite to compensate for blood the master.... again, just plain stupidity. I piss people off easily.
Furthermore, noobs in PvP tend to get pissed off when you own them, and sometimes people are just assholes. And/or I just don't like them.
EDIT : I just find 98% of the human population to be rather... slow. Kay? Until you've proven you won't do or say something stupid at least once an hour.... No, just no. That's why I hero/hench more often than not... I only need 30 more areas in proph to vanquish, then I've gotten all the PvE titles (Guardian, vanquisher, legendary master, ect.) without needing a single other player, using a consumable, using "gimmick" builds like N/Rt healers, using a single wiki build, or using any norn blessing skill (aside from the missions that you have to)
In my opinion, PvE is a one-player game. It's only online in case you're not good enough to do it on your own.

Honestly I think the only reason you need an ignore list is because you keep thinking other people give a shit about what you think of the build they run, so stick to h/h and you don't need an ignore list or even a friends list for that matter.

Actually...I'd be cool with the "Friends Only/Guildie" Drop down option or the "Friend Request"
Personally ever since I started getting into PvP and having to get on vent, as soon as someone hears I'm a female they decide to add me to their friend's list and randomly pm me with cheesy lines and retarded comments.
I can't fit all these horny obnoxious guys on the ignore list.

/sigh, This happens to me REGULARLY... i seem to have an everlasting effect on people and constantly get messages from people who aren't on my f list and i have no idea who they are. I'm really not sure why because i'm really horrible to people most of the time but anyway... it's so awkward .. i feel bad saying "whoru?" after they send a message like "Hey !!!! how are you? ))))" so i pretend i remember them or go offline =/
also a bigger ignore list is a great idea because the scrub population grows exponentially

I'm not too popular in the GuildWars community, but some of the people that message me who I have no idea who they are, just remind me that we used to hang out in the beginning of the game or something.

I know this feeling, I get random PM's all the time because of my YouTube videos and I'm thinking "who is this person?" Now sure I don't mind randomly talking to people but I do see your point. So yes there should be a better friend system, at least for Guild Wars 2.
The ignore list is too small with all the spammers and jerks in the game. And I still say that if you have someone on your ignore list they shouldn't even be allowed to see if you're online. It's better than them getting a note saying "So and so is ignoring you".
So those are my thoughts, I like this idea so I'll /sign.

I'd like the choice to whether or not the person sees me as a FRIEND or not.

You trick a scammer (they want you to go outside, and you agree. They walk away, you drop a crappy item for example: Plagueborn Armour. the step in and pick it up, realise you tricked them and they spam yo with hate...)
Also, in PvP and Ursan PUGs, especially if you have a bad day monking, you can make alot of enemies for small things..

Having random people go "Oh hai! Remember me?" makes me feel bad when they aren't on my friends list <<; I seem to have a lasting effect on people :/
Also about the ignore list, I agree on increasing it, but mine isn't full so meh :P

Doesn' change anything really. I should still have the choice who can and cannot have contact with me in game, who can and cannot see whether I'm online or not.
There's a big difference between making new friends, which I don't have an issue with, and being spammed with random PMs from people you have never spoken to before, to join a guild just because it's got guild of the week. Better management of friends lists would solve that.

Actors and Musicians complain about how they can't go out in public like a real person without getting swarmed, but if they didn't have fans in the theater, they'd be even more upset.
You can't have it both ways, you can't be So-and-So from Really Cool Guild [RCG] and be anonymous too. It's the Price of Fame.
When you don't want to get phone calls from people you don't know, you don't list your phone number. If you don't want to talk to telemarketers, you screen your calls with an answering machine or caller ID. It's not that hard to screen your PMs.
I'm onboard with putting people on your ignore list for a few days and clearing the oldest ignores as time goes on. Eventually people get the hint.

Its not QQ'ing. It's a simple suggestion that is implemented in most other online services. I don't mind if someone wants to chat to me, I'm hardly unsocial, but I should have the ability to control whether they get that far in the first place within the right boundaries. Whether someone knows my name or not, and whether they can actually see if I'm online or not without my permission are two totally different things and people here should not confuse the two.
After all you know my username on the forums here but that doesn't mean you can PM me or see my online status without me allowing you to, why should Guild Wars (or any online game for that matter) really be any different?

I've never had this issue but then again I keep my in-game name, guild, etc pretty private other than one thread here which has never caused issue thus far.
If you post it on a public forum, youtube, in screenies, etc, you kinda shot yourself in the foot.
In saying I 100% agree with the OP.The communication and social mechanic of GW is open to abuse by haters.

I very much doubt we'll see anything done for Guild Wars but I hope to see much improvement in the social system come Guild Wars 2.

Anyways, /sign for both the OP and the increasing of Ignore list. Getting random PMs from people I don't know is just... annoying (and I don't want to be an ass so I don't move them to my ignore list unless they bug me more then "hello")
