who is the best title hunter/weapon wielder?
joeycarlos
I'm wondering what character to make my main title hunter, and I've narrowed it down to two professions - Ranger and Assassin. I'm making my choice solely on which character generally wields weapons more effectively (eg. sword/axe/hammer/spear/scythe/daggers/bow). Another important factor to consider would be the amount of PvE-only skills that would be viable on this character, since I want my title-hunting to actually be for something. These two aspects are, I feel, important for a main character because they keep it from being boring and provide variety. One might say that I want the best of both worlds, which might be too much to ask for- but too bad, I do
So, the ranger has high elemental armor and expertise, which cheapens the cost of most other attacks, as well as providing various defensive stances. However, the assassin has critical strikes, and thus has energy management when using all types of weapons. It inherently adds damage by increasing critical hit chance. Unfortunately, the energy gained from critical strikes is somewhat based on chance. It also seems to me that both classes have quite a bit of utility from wilderness survival and shadow arts, which is a big plus.
I have played both characters quite extensively, and between the two, gameplay is all the same to me, and I don't really prefer either one, which makes it a hard decision.
Yes, I may have answered my own question, :P but I just wanted to know what everyone else thinks. Thanks!
PS. If it makes a difference, I plan mostly an H/Hing alone, no pugs for me!

Assassin primary, ranger secondary. Problem solved.
For a few titles, you will need both defencive, and running skills, that of which an Assassin primary can provide best. Utilizing some ranger stances in addition (although a Mesmer's "mantra's" may be better in some cases), can end up in a decent runner.
As for titles that require killing mobs, the assassin has the damage advantage there, i find. You will find that assassin is a good base profession, and that you can easily work around their flaws with a good secondary profession choice for that map.

moebius+ death blossem= most epic DPS on a weapon wielder
sythesins> sytherangers in pve
Shadow form still rocks for running/ mapping
the choice is clear

Ranger has more variety. It can use a bow very well (obviously), hammers, daggers, and to some extent scythes.
Compared to sins which are just daggers and scythes.
Rangers can interrupt, blindbot, degen, and damage. They can fill in pretty much any offensive role. Assassins are just purely about killing stuff. While they do have the highest DPS, it does get boring just killing stuff. And you said you are looking for variety; in that case, the choice is quite clear.

a case can be made that Assassins barrage better than rangers.
and that crit interupter that surfaced a while back was pretty good.
axesins are viable in pve (most things are)
plus sin's can act as a spellcaster, which GOOD rangers never have done.

Ranger and Assassin are probably the two most universal professions in the game. Both have are able to wield any melee weapon and be effective enough to get by with.
As per PvE skills...Assassins have [critical agility] and can use [Save yourselves] more effectively then rangers can without losing to much damage. Would say assassins out play rangers in the realm of PvE skills.
Both can work well without needing human help so H/H'ing isn't a problem
In the end its your choice but thats just a breakdown of the points you brought up. Assassins only really outclass Rangers in PvE skills....and even then Rangers are still very effective in ways Assassins can never hope to be.
So I would say pick the playstyle that suits you best.

Well... I made my Assassin 2 years ago now... starting playing her got her through the games, lots farming etc, so I considered her my primary... Until September '07, creation of my Ranger... wrhooaamm he's way ahead of my sin now... much more fun to play (and yes that is MY opinion), and Marverick summed it all up... so I'd choose Ranger, but it still is up to you

my first character was a ranger, and i deleted him on his 2nd bday because I only really play my warrior and sin. I used the extra slot to make a survivor para.

But on a serious note, it depends on what you like to do. If you're mroe into blowing stuff up then go Sin. Moebius DB is one of the best builds for that. If youre more into shutdown, i say ranger. Broad Head Arrow, Interupts, Damage, Range, and the ability to use melee weapons effectively all make it great.
So yeah.
Also, @ the person who said sins barrage better then rangers, thats only a 1/2 truth. Barraging with a conjure up does lotsa damage as well, and the higher end areas of the game crits dont mean so much.

take your pick based on style of play, Assassins have great DPS & Rangers have lots of interupts and conditions - there is no wrong choice, in PVE it is very hard to go completely wrong with a profession choice - you can change your secondary as often as you want to as well. :d

Ranger
Epic interrupts , great survivability , expertise , what else to say
While not the most damaging class at first sight , it can do some nice damage. Also broad head arrow is awesome.

Well, based on what was said...
I'm gathering that Assassins win in terms of PvE skills, due to their higher energy regeneration, melee range and quick adrenaline gain, which basically covers the requirements of most PvE skills from EotN.
What hasn't been made so clear yet is: who wields most of the weapons more effectively? But I'll be a little more specific now - if I wanted to use some of the most effective builds in the game like: D-slash, scythe spike, save yourselves, knocklock, DB/MS, barrage, etc, who would be the better all-rounder (meaning, it might not be quite as effective as original classes, but decent enough) Hey, in PvE, anything is possible, right? I want my character to be able to do EVERYTHING! And I know that's not possible, but I wanna get as close to that as I can get!
And as I said before, gameplay is all the same to me, and since I'll be switching weapons all the time, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Rangers have effective builds wielding
- Scythe (!)
- Hammer
- Daggers (meh)
Sins are effective with
- Daggers (pwn!)
- Scythe
Expertise makes all kind of weird **** possible, though on either of them I would aim for a Warrior secondary simply because of [save yourselves]
Versatility or DPS? DPS for me, maybe not for you
