I need help with setting up a wireless router

Here's the situation. I have an ntl broadband modem and have been using it for years, even though they have now been taken over by Virgin Media. Basically I want to connect my new PC (as described in a previous thread) to the internet but I haven't the foggiest idea how, except for the fact that I need a wireless router.

I'm not sure what other equipment I need or even how to establish a second internet connection. If it is of any use, this PC is downstairs and my new PC will soon reside upstairs in my bedroom. I also have 10 MB broadband. If anyone could explain what type of equipment I need and how to go about getting the internet on my new PC I'd be forever grateful. I blame modern games that require online registration!

as you said, you need a (good) wireless router. simply connect your internet modem to your router, and connect your computers to your router.

it's a little bit different with wireless connection, since you'll need to first setup it's security. it's a little hard to explain on a forum, but i think reading the instruction manual should be enough.

As it's Virgin, make sure it's a CABLE modem/router, not an ADSL one.

It's a cable modem, small silver box with a USB and Ethernet port at the back. My Virgin Broadband is currently connected via USB.

If you have the possibility of running an ethernet cable up to your room, do it. I know a lot of people swear by wireless - I just swear at it.

Wireless connections are more likely to suffer lag. Wireless isn't as pervasive as they'd have you believe - having the router on a different floor might be fine, but then again it might be total crap.

Connecting your router via USB is also crap.

Is that router supplied by Virgin? Crap.

Have a look in your local Maplins (or Curry's (shudder)) - there's a wide range of cable modems available, and a lot of them are emblazoned with "Compatible with Virgin Broadband" or similar tosh.
