I reinstalled GW today after not playing for a month since my comp got a whole make over, and when i started playing, after a few min GW would freeze up and then go to a black screen. Then a red box would appear saying "Signal Frequency lost, change signal frequency" and it would just freeze everything up, so if anyone knows what that is and how to fix it id appreciate it, thank you.

Err...are you using wireless?

Also, is this a dialog box in GW? Or just in Windows?

Yea its Verizon Wireless DSL, and the first two times the red box was just on a black screen, this only happens when i get on GW, the 3rd time i tried GW just froze completely and nothing happened, i had to reboot the comp by the button

Ok, that makes more sense then. You may be getting some interference that's causing your wireless card to lose signal. Is there any utility that came with the card to look at signal frequency, etc?

Or Verizon may see that you're using up a lot of bandwidth and cut you off. Read in your service agreement and make sure they allow games to be played over their service. I don't know whether they do or not, but I know some companies don't allow it.

This also belongs in the Technician's Corner.

Don't worry about it. We're here to help.

Where did your computer go? Was there work done on it or something?

It went to a family friend because he works for IBM and made the computer for us in the first place a couple years ago, and yea he put in a new mother board, new video card, and additional memory, and added a DVD drive, i think that's about it, i called him about it and hes not even sure as to what the problem is he said hes going to try to look something up but I'm just trying to find the answer to.

This is more likely to be a problem with the video card. The video card freezes, cutting off the signal to the monitor and give rise to the error.

Alright thanks a lot, ill see if there are any updates for the video card and download them if there are any. Thanks for the help I'll keep it posted on what happens later.

Looking at Verizons plans they show no mention of online gaming in the OK section. They do mention games but my guess is they mean downloading a game to play (not a contstant connection)

This was in the Not Ok (not sure if GW is considered one of these)

running software or other devices that maintain continuous active Internet connections when a computer's connection would otherwise be idle, or "keep alive" functions, unless they adhere to Verizon Wireless' requirements for such usage,

You probably need to call them for clarification. My guess as suggested above they are cutting you off.

question: if you power on your monitor without connecting it to the computer, does it give you the same red box?

if so, the problem lies with your graphics card. make sure it's getting enough power.

if not, then we can say it's the wireless connection.

btw, post your computer's specs, including the wattage/make of your powersupply.

I have to say that "Signal frequency lost" sounds much more like loss of signal to the monitor to me.

They may have updated the rules for the software that is micro managing the usage of the network. Are you able to hard connect to a line to see if game runs clean? Normal surfing ok?

Ok one thing though is i used to have a GeForce FX 5500 256mb, and it would run good on that now i have a HIS ATI Radeon 512mb, could that be the problem?

Honestly like i said I'm not a computer wiz so I'm not sure how to "hard connect," but yea normal web surfing is fine, its only when i open up GW that it happens.

Yea there's a line that goes from the small box and connects into the Ethernet port.

Now I am getting confused

Do you have a wireless network card that came from your provider? It is a small card that has an antenna (You can go anywhere outside with it in your service area like a cell phone)

Or

Are you talking about a wireless home network? Which is a cable or phone line that comes in from outside you home that connects to a modem then to a router then it is wireless to your computer (You can connect up to a certain distance away from the router.)

Looks sort of like

i think the OP's friend forgot to upgrade the power supply, which is causing the graphic card to go belly up everytime he loads up a 3D application.

Its a wireless home network with the phone line coming in from outside, and to Moriz, how would i go about fixing that if that is the problem?

install a new power supply.

btw, what exact card did he put in? run dxdiag and tell us what it is.

but first, do what i suggested the first time: unplug your monitor from the graphics card, and turn it on. does it give you the same red box?

Only problem is I'm not very good with doing all that stuff so that's why I'm kind of at a standstill here.

you're just disconnecting cables :S

either way, if you can't do those things, we cannot help you. offering tech support over an internet forum is useless if the end user does not participate.

if you don't feel like disconnecting cables: turn off your computer, turn off your monitor, and then turn it back on after a few seconds. does it still give you that red box? if so, then it's a problem with you graphics card, and possibly your powersupply no longer keeping up with the power requirement.

EDIT: by "it" i mean the monitor. the whole point of doing this, is to make sure that the "signal lost" message means there's no video signal coming from your graphic card during gaming.

well right now I'm currently installed a graphics card update so I'm going to see if that works first.
