I know this will never happen in GW1 cuz they are just letting that dead horse rot now but maybe for GW2.
my idea that i have had for a a long time is "War" Pvp areas. like
Defend the fort. you have 12 members on your team, and have to defend against the opposite team of 24, or maybe 48. include siege weapons/repair, scored on how long you last.
Persistant battle: basically once a week or month. start a battle that lasts for a day/a few days. 100 vs 100 and it assigns you to keep each side balanced. siege weapons, environmental traps, side that pushed the other back to thier castle/stronghold wins but the battle doesn't stop at all for a full 24 hours or more.
duel or "you insulted my sister": 1 vs 1 2 out of 3 matches is winner. loser wears a "I just got owned" tag for 5/10 minutes.

I hear rumors of something similar to your "war" idea for GW2, which I'm super pumped about . 1v1 won't work due to to many greifing builds. You'll get way to many [[shadow form]/[[spell breaker]/[[obsidian flesh] noobasaurs. Mix them in with [[riposte] spammers and you get 0 fun.

Already supposed to happen in GW2 as 'World' PvP, 1v1 would not work in the least, due to the obvious reasons.
