I make my tourny selections every month. But I have no idea what I'm doing, what does the gp? number mean, is the higher number better than a lower number or other way around?

I have two accounts so I play twice, on one account I use high numbers the other I use lower numbers, and haven't noticed any real benefit either way.

Also, I notice that occassionally teams that aren't on the list make the finals which makes it hard to pick them.

Is their a place I can read about these teams to see how they are ranked, or how they got their rankings?

Free stuff, I'm all for it, but PvP and GvG confuses the heck out of me.

If you mean QP, that is their qualifier points they earn from daily tournaments. You need 20 to get in the monthly. I've seen many great guilds get their 20 and stop competing for them, so by no means is this a measure of how "good" the guild is and can largely be disregarded.

Yes, the list gets updated as guilds earn their 20 QPs. Even then, sometimes they don't get updated soon enough. That is an issue with whoever is maintaining the list. Make your picks as close to the deadline as possible (you can keep changing your picks, so make sure you get some early in too, so you have *something*).

You can go to www.guildwars.com and click "competitive" to see the guild rankings. Hit "B" while in game to observe some games to see how they got there.
