The long answer is: The gold will be worth more because 99.9% of the time a purple weapon will have worse stats or mods than a gold weapon. There are rare occasions when that doesn't happen, but it's usually true.
Also, most buyers will pay more for a gold weapon because of the fact that it's more "rare" even if it has the same stats as a purple.
P.S. There are always exceptions. There are purple items that sell for a lot (ex: Crystalline Swords, Magma Shields, etc.)

But even when talking about Crystallines, the gold versions are worth WAY more.
Not to mention that, on the rare occassion a max purple drops, it's usually high requirement.
