Class Popularity

Hi guys, I was just curious as to the order of profession popularity in the PvP sector of Guild Wars. I only care about PvP because I'm just going to level up characters in PvE and then use that character for PvP because I'm too cheap to buy skill packs since I heard that they can be unlocked in the PvE content.

What's the general order for class popularity, because I like picking the "low tier" or unpopular classes because I think they can be good dark horses. I only care about primary professions. Thanks

It matters what you're doing, if you must know.

Pretty much every class is used currently. Maybe assassins not so much because they've been nerfed pretty heavily.
What type of PvP are you talking about?

Press "B".

Most professions have their uses, but most are stupid imbalanced and should die in a fire.

Not sure if you know this but you can unlock skills by playing PvP and PvP-only characters have access to ALL unlocked skills.
So no need to PvE and no need to buy skill packs - just make sure you start by unlocking the best skills around.
(Ohh and going non-core classes is quite nice. Those guys broke the game for a reason ...)

(Edit:
Khmm - disregard the last remark if you REALLY meant primary rather then core ....)

ranger, necro, monk would be the most popular.

all classes are used though, even assassins because of dark apostasy (but thats really all i see them for other than A/D callers with wounding strike).

there is no 'unpopular' class... if youre coming from games that have best classes for pvp and worst classes for pvp GW is not like that. there are no 'dark horses'.

ps - you can unlock skills with balth fact which you get by pvping...

Well here is your lesson for the day.

In PvE you must earn gold to unlock skills and buy Capture sigs to Cap elites.
(a few skills are given from quests but most must be bought)
You have to use skill points and gold to buy skills in pve after the first so many the price goes up to 1k gold+1 skill point per skill.
In PvE you have to find/id runes to beable to use them once that rune is unlocked you can then buy it from a trader for a price (gold).
Then you have weapon mods these can be found in pve but not bought from a trader you can buy them from other players for a cost again (gold).

In PvP you earn Faction for every kill and every win then you use that faction to unlock skills from the priest located in every pvp arena. Normal skills cost 1k faction elites cost 3k Faction, unlock all runes with faction and mods.

If you plan on doing GvG, learn to play either monk, war, ranger, or mesmer.

If you want to do other forms of PvP, all of the professions have their uses.

find a PVP Guild that is willing to teach you some tricks and then practice with one of every kind of PVP char. Play a day or two with each type, delete that char and create a new one with a diff proffesion. By the end of a week or less you should have a rough idea which one you like the best. All classes are valid in Guild Wars, PVE or PVP.

I often see PvE Ritualists as the class I don't see too much at all.
I often see PvE Necromancers more than any other class.

For PvP, Monks very often, but I don't think any class has a sense of rejection more than the others.

Mesmer. Screw with people, make them cry, make them QQ, make them HATE YOU. Turn them to the darkside, use their anger!

You have no idea how amusing it is to see a ranger spamming interrupts and then you divert his Dshot. Epic.

Sig Hum, cancel, sig hum, cancel, sig hum, cancel, Ranger is out of interrupts, Sig hum. LOL.

My favorite, Power Blocking the RC monk. SO EPIC.

Sorry to burst your bubble here but your main concern at the start would be to learn the ways of PvP play. That will only happen if you get a lot of game-time going to build up the required experience. You are only going to see lots of game-time if you play a wanted class at a decent level.

That being said : forget about the underdogs for now. Specially since non of the primary classes are actual underdogs. Warrior, ranger, mesmer, necro, elementalist and monk are all used a lot. Just play around, see what fits you best, and go with that.

It better to pick a class and get a PHD in it then to try to be good with all of them. Makes shure you pick something you like to play tough.

There are better ways to shut down a backline.

I wouldn't start out as a mesmer, largely because it requires a large scope of gameplay: basically, you need to know every class extremely well before you can become an effective mesmer. I would start out as something else - warrior, ranger, monk (though they aren't very simple). The amateur mistake is to think that domination mesmers are more powerful than anything else, and that Diversion is the best skill in the game, bla bla bla bla. This obviously isn't true, and at this point in the game, people will expect you to do too many things at once, and it gets pretty confusing at the start.

TBH the classes you will find always find needed are warrior and monk. The others kinda switch around with the meta.

**just monk. Warriors are switched out pretty frequently for Dervishes, and sometimes even assassins for dedicated splits.

Unless you are planning on farming a lot to get your pve-toon perfect gear, stick to a pvp character... I always hate people that play pvp with a pve character and have like 507 hp, a sundering weapon and a -5/20% shield... ( " omg perfect mod, yes? " )

Agreed, trying to find stuff in PvE is a waste of time... just farm Zaishen Elite and do some RA and AB until you can get the mods you want... it'll only take you a couple of days or so to complete a build on one character from scratch. Then you can use that character to get balth faction to build the rest.

i think monks are more wanted than warriors in both. look at any town in pve: "GLF 2 MONKS!" look at nearly every build in pvp "GLF 2 (or 3) MONKS!...YO!"(i added the yo cause its cool...yo)

PvP and experience go hand in hand. It all comes down to which ever class you are most comfortable with.

Starting from scratch, I would try playing all the classes and decide which one works best for you in particular. The comments in this thread should have given you a basic idea of what each class has to offer but whether or not each one is suited for your play style is up to you. Some people suck at monking, some people suck at shutdown and so on. The problem is very few of these people realize how bad they suck at it so they keep on thinking they don't.

Most importantly realize that each class has a contribution to every map whether you are talking RA,AB,GvG, etc. PvP experience is a long road, with a lot of biotches to step over. Learn to accept constructive criticism, but ignore the "I pwnzd your face cuz Im so 1337's", laugh at the trash talkers and remember opinions are like a-holes, everyone has one, but yours is the only one you need to worry about.

Looks accurate but I would say, in PvE, this is the order I see it:

1. Warrior
2. Monk
3. Elementalist
4. Necro
5. Ranger
6. Assassin
7. Dervish
8. Paragon
9. Mesmer
10. Ritualist
