Playing Games with Your Kids to Keep in Touch?
Regina Buenaobra
NCsoft North America is interested in showcasing the families who play our game (and other NCsoft games) for a "Back to School" story they would like to ptich to the media. They are looking for parents who can answer "yes" to this question and are willing to talk to reporters:
Do you have a school-age child leaving home who plays Guild Wars, and will you play with them as a way to keep in touch?
You would be providing the following information, which will be kept private:
Real name
Phone number
Email
Home city
Name and age of children
If you're interested, please contact me via PM. Cheers!

Ok, reopening. I'm warning you all now, all flames will be deleted and flamers will get some time off.

Actually my dad and I started playing this game 3 years ago, a few weeks after the game came out. It was a great way to keep in touch because it somewhat gained even more trust.
This may not work for other parents and kids because my dad was a gamer, so he knew what to expect in this game and found it rather interesting compared to other online games. Other parents will probably find it rather boring, but they might give it a chance if they were willing too.
EDITED by Messy /snip..... so why would you edit and quote what you know will be deleted?

My dad play's with my guild and me, but I don't leave for university until next year :P

If i had a kid id totally be doing this!

I'm a grown up, but I still have that school-age kid that pops up every now and then, hiding inside, does that count too?
Anyway, good luck with the story thingy etc.

I'm guessing I missed something big? Aww...o well.

Some people might wonder where there post is........... well..... aside from flaming and trolling, if you quote a deleted post....... it also gets deleted. So please, if you want your post to remain in this thread..... don't flame and don't feed the trolls.

My son is a bit to young right now but, I am hoping he can jump in on GW2 at some point. This game would be a great way to keep in touch and have fun at the same time.
Karate Jesus
I think this is a good idea. I've had several parents who played with their kids in different guilds I've been a member in. I think it can help them keep in touch.

I'm a gamer and none of my kids are. I am expecting a grandson to be born in Oct, by the time he's old enough, we'll probably be playing GW3. hehe

No, because it would feel slightly awkward if I were playing with my parents (speaking from a 'kid' perspective). I mean, I don't expect my parents to hang about with my real life friends, and the same should happen online.

My father got me into role-playing when I was 8-9 and we played for years and years. Wouldnt feel awkward to me at all. I suppose it depends on the relationship.
Best of luck Regina in finding some who fit the bill. I know many married couples that play. I even once met a father/son team in a PUG, but alas it was so long ago I have forgotten their names. I'm sure there's a few out there.

My Dad would play if only we got a seperate account for him. Around the time I started playing, he couldn't figure out where the 2.3k gold I made came from. Sharing an account was a big no.
I do have to say one thing off-topic:
Why is this thread so... random? I can only assume that GW2 will not be going to be rated the Teen rating...

i actually think that might bring parents and kids closer togethers ince they will have a "cool young" interest in common and to teh kid parents will not be as "dorky" and "old fashion" as they seemed.
i would actually encourage my kid to show me the game hes playing (when i have one :P), since it will give me an outlook on whats influencing his mind and of course will create a better connection.
now more on topic, i was ina guild where te father (leader) had 3 of his kids playing GW, only one of them was away at school, but ah well. that guys by the way was the only monk the dad trusted for gvgs.

I played with my sister when she was living in China simply because it was something we could do together when we couldn't actually see eachother...
I'd never play with my parents though simply because we're functional and when we do things together we actually...you know...like to see eachother...and sometimes *god forbid* go outdoors!

My son, (He is 19 now) originally addicted ME to video games when Diablo 1 came out. (Then D2..StarCraft..Warcraft, NOT WoW)
Then he encouraged me to Beta several other games.
We play together on GW every now and then. (He is away at university)..But he still manages to come home every other week with his laundry..and display an appetite the size of an elephant..><
I couldn't submit his name tho..he hates the public.
(That's my boy!)

since I said what I said, here's the feed back, also thank you for asking
No, I don't play with children, thats where arena net don't know how to ask question, I think a lot of people do play with their family members to get in touch, its a great way to get in touch too. I have family members spread across the world and we play together all the time.
We used to have our own guild that only have our family members in them, at some point its not that interesting to upkeep that anymore so we sold it.
Lastly, very sorry I do not feel comfortable disclosing any identity over the internet to whichever party. And I also don't have permission from family members to disclose theirs, I'd be hang by them if I do.
Happy Mermering stuffs in the game.

Hmmm...there are a couple of players in my alliance who have parents who also play. I should bring this to their attention when they next log in.

Waaaa parents are so annoying they blocked MSN on me until I'm 18...
Luckily my parents think Guild Wars is an offline/singeplayer game (thanks to heroes!)

on-topic - as a kid I'd probably have been against the idea of playing computer games with my parents, and yet now, as an adult, I'd probably be quite happy to play computer games with any kids I have in the future.

Haven't started spawning, but I did play StarCraft/Diablo II/several other games a lot with my father some years back.

Aww, what a nice thought. My parents (well my mum) doesn't think I stay in contact enough whilst I'm at uni, but I'm always on Guild Wars. Problem is there is too large of a generation gap; it would be impossible to get them playing. The closest came when my dad and I used to play simple games on our old N64, but Guild Wars would just be too complicated.
Which is a pity, as they would not only be able to keep in touch in a fun way, but they'd really benefit from the escapism and relaxation it can bring.
I did however try to introduce other family members and friends, but that was unsuccessful. GW2 will be a different story; they will. At the time of it's release, I will be even harder to contact as I hope move elsewhere in the world, and you'll be able to find me online there for definite!
Will be interested in hearing the stories that come from this investigation...

One of the big reasons I actually started playing Guild Wars over three years ago was to help stay in touch with someone who moved overseas. It gave us an activity that we could do together even from far away.
It depends on the community response that the NCsoft contact gets from not just Guild Wars, but other NCsoft titles. So if there is a decent response, we may see something come of this effort.

Just a thought to help in getting this kick off
how about a Family PvP day sound to you? with prizes, you can interview the entrants easily. I am sure more people will be interested if there's an even tie to it.
Price the "Jones Family Cape" (example)
just a thought.
cheers.

I started playing Guild Wars to keep in touch with my brother, who lives on the other side of our apartment. I'm not sure if that counts.

Spike my dad in 3-2-1!

I think that this is a good idea, while I cannot imagine my parents ever playing any video game, for those younger families out there I think this could be very useful. It's not going to be for everyone, but it does work very well for those that have such mutual interests to begin with. As I stated before, I would be very interested to see the statistics for this when they come out.

My step dad said he's going to buy GW2 when it comes out for the both of us so we have an account each, so he can see what's so interesting about it, but as for now he says he'll do with late night telly and take-out.
