I'll C+P Regina

Quote:
This year, members of the ArenaNet development team will be appearing at a panel at the Penny Arcade Expo, which will take a look at the past three years of Guild Wars. We know that not everyone will have the opportunity to be at PAX to ask questions in-person, so this is your chance.

The team will review the submitted questions and select the most fun and interesting ones to answer at the panel. The first portion of the panel will be devoted to answering questions solicited from the community, before launching into a Q&A session with the panel audience.

Just as a reminder: the team will not be answering questions about GW2, so please keep your questions focused on GW1.

Please post on this thread with your questions.
What this thread is for:
Post your questions, and I'll post them (if they are applicable to the rules that she set) on GWO for you. This is good if:
-You don't visit GWO and don't want to because you don't like it (which is okay).
-You are banned at GWO.
-You want to be heard because this wasn't posted here so far.

What this thread isn't for:
-Attacking Regina in any way. If you even vaguely hint it, I won't post your shit at all.
-Talking about why it wasn't posted here, that's unimportant for this thread.
-Attacking the CR in any way.
-Attacking ArenaNet in any way, this includes in your question.
-Asking GW2 questions or complaining about GW2.
-Arguing about fansites.
-Posting anything that isn't a question relevant to the topic at hand.

All posts not relevant to the topic will be reported and handled by the mods. Don't even try it.

Annnnd, go.

This is your chance to be heard, so ask whatever you want! Why a skill is the way it is, how something was made, etc. Ask whatever, and I'll do my best to pass that along. Don't worry about duplicate questions, I'll sort that out.

Thanks DarkNecrid,

I am sure arena net is making money, with 5 million copies sold, and lots of players with more then 10 character slots. Some even have 42, so I am going to base on that and ask you the following question.

Is arena net planning on donating to any charity? Your players seem to be conscious of planning events and raising awareness, for instant, The successful Pink Day in LA and the recently announced Green Day in LA.

If you don't have any plan when this question is ask, will you at least consider making a charitable something to a cause you all feel is deserving?

Suggestion of how you can do this:

Example 1, during xx months until xx months xx%of all in game store sale will be contributed to xx charity.
Example 2 (this may look like its about guild wars 2 but its not): pre-order guild wars 2 thru guild wars in game store, without getting the box hence encouraging players to not buy unnecessary paper products and arena net will donate xx% of said sale to xx charity.

Sincerely Pumpkin Pie

Question 2: This is a bit far fetch but it would make Guild Wars's server over loaded if you managed to pull it off.

Will arena net ever invite a famous person once in a while to appear in Guild Wars the game itself, maybe during festivals and special function and let the players meet up and have talk session and then ends with a special elite mission run? xx percents from the extra/increase sales from inviting said Celebrity will be donated charity of your choice.

Example: Buy guild wars now and get to play with celebrity XX on 4th of July or xx date. Store selling guild wars game will have to carry this poster as a promotion measure and maybe show said celebrity in some guild wars outfit.

Q: Why did you decide to make PvE 'harder' by giving them rediculous monster only skills/buff their damage by shitloads instead of giving them better skillbars that synergize well with the other monsters in their mob ? (Some EOTN mobs are perfect examples of this*charr, mandragors, ..*)

Thanks for doing this DarkNecrid.

I was just wondering why the other realms of the Gods have not found their way into the game. I am sure this would be something most of the players would love, and indeed many like myself have been waiting for for 3 years. Anyways, the storylines and mythology in Guild Wars are fun and interesting, and I think fully exploring the current games' culture would be a great way to keep interest until Guild Wars 2. The bonus mission pack was a great example of this. Thanks!

My Question:

Being a player since the Prophecies beta, I find myself growing a bit tired with the current content - not because it's not good, but because I've done almost everything PvE there is to do aside from some titles. Are there any plans for any upcoming content updates (not related to special events) to keep players like me online?

I think this is crossposted from the thread which this topic was brought up, but to make it official:

The 'Ursan Blessing' skill has been the source of some controversy among the PvE section of the Guild Wars community. Some of the discussion has been over whether the skill was "intended" to have one effect or another on the PvE metagame (giving characters of less-desired professions the means to overcome class discrimination, lowering the bar for entry to elite areas for less experienced players, and so on). What role, if any, was the Ursan Blessing (and other Blessing skills) intended to play, or was it simply intended as a bit of fun?

This one's a bit long, sorry:

After the end of the GWFC, it seemed like GW was going places. You were getting mad coverage at Leipzig, and War Machine winning probably attracted a huge amount of interest in GW, even to those who would not necessarily PvP. GW could seriously have been a competitive game with the best of them.

However, fast forward to now. Big competitions like this have been discontinued, in favour of monthly AT's which draw bugger all publicity and have no prizes worth competing for. What in your opinion went wrong and how do you envisage GW2 as a competitive game?

My quesion is:

Why did you decide to go against your long stated vision of skill>time, and create an unprecedented amount of grind, to the degree various game sites refer to GW as Grind wars.

Hello Arena Net,

I'm just wondering why you diverted the original game plans from Factions onwards through adding grind into the game, then onto the release of Nightfall, add more grind and some of which that had benefits along with the addition of PvE skills a bit after release obtainable in both Factions and Nightfall, aswell as the huge power creep that probably could've been sorted and modified before the actual implimentation of the game?

Moving on to GW:EN, why did you impliment even more grind-wise titles with benefits, and bring forward the skill known as Ursan Blessing to be usable outside of the little quests aswell?

Also, what was your motivation behind this altogether with adding new mechanics and professions in the game aswell?

PS: This is sort of an addition to Squishy's question.

Thanks to Dark Necrid for passing this along and Earth for allowing this thread to be created.

I'd like to ask you about the marketing strategy for Guild Wars. I see Guild Wars left out of top games lists in various gaming magazines and shows like on E3, despite being so much better than most of the games listed. Do you feel this is because of the unlimited free play aspect of Guild Wars? Are other game makers influencing critics against your form of pricing? Or has Anet intentionally tried to avoid self promotion for some reason?

I would like to know if 1)Guild Wars will continue to function in the foreseeable future, and 2)can you see any new content being added to GW in the future, by way of additional quests given by existing NPC's, or new mission packs?

This may sound silly, or whatever, but I have grown quite fond of most if not all of my characters, and don't want to see them lost forever in the rubble of a dead game.

Nice that your taking the time to grather from elite site for another. Thanks for doing this DarkNecrid, saving me from needing to reg on a different site

I only have two questions.

1. Is there any plans to add new content to GWs. Be it armor, mission packs etc.

2. With HoM turning into account thing, will all grind based be able to become account wide? *SS/LB and the different GWEN titles*

WHERE DO YOU THINK

W/

Did you intentionally buff SF so Perma was easily maintainable. Then ignore it.
Did you forsee Ursan obliterating all forms of PvE, other than the class discrim.
Do you really think that titles with benefits/pure grind titles where a good idea.
Do you think that (including the dieing economy) repetitive farming is only real way to make a decent amount of money (sides get a VERY LUCKY drop)
Do you take any real initiative towards making some of the more common "noob" builds in PvP less powerful. (Such as the dual RoA Axe in TA, ShoveSpike, WS, ect)
Do you think that adding new classes with some very different and abuse able skills was a good idea for the PvE/PvP meta.
Do you forsee any major updates to GW1 before GW2, and I don't mean new tonics/small changes, I am talking SF/DoA.
Do you feel that you ban to easily (no I was not banned) or do not examine the circumstance before banning someone.
A lot of people think that your communication with the community is subpar, do you feel the same and do you plan to improve it.
Why has there been no response on the disater of the mAT.

All I can think of atm

My Question:

If you do add BMP style content to GW1, would you consider doing it in a way that allows parties to access the content (obviously if all party members have the relevant pack).

It would be far more fun for me if I could do these small missions with a group than solo, and I think add to the replayability (is that even a word?) of the BMP missions.

*Thanks DarkNecrid and Earth.

Hi, I have a couple of questions.

1. How do you guys deal with the so called hardcore fanbase and some of their negativities toward the updates, new contents, expansion or just the game in general?

2. How offen do you guys take comments, suggestions and ideas from the fans and take them into consideration for the new updates and so on?

Thank you.

Good questions, when we get more I'll make sure to cross post.

Kerwyn, your questions are a bit iffy to me. They all seem to be focused on Anet's failures or failing in someway. I could probably answer them the best that I can tho.

Did you intentionally buff SF so Perma was easily maintainable. Then ignore it. <--- They probably knew it was going to happen but didn't understand the repercussions at the time do to a hardcore playerbase.
Did you forsee Ursan obliterating all forms of PvE, other than the class discrim. <-- Probably not.
Do you really think that titles with benefits/pure grind titles where a good idea. <--- Maybe.
Do you think that (including the dieing economy) repetitive farming is only real way to make a decent amount of money (sides get a VERY LUCKY drop) <--- No.
Do you take any real initiative towards making some of the more common "noob" builds in PvP less powerful. (Such as the dual RoA Axe in TA, ShoveSpike, WS, ect) <--- Yes.
Do you think that adding new classes with some very different and abuse able skills was a good idea for the PvE/PvP meta. <--- No it wasn't. Izzy himself has said this was a terrible thing to do on Weapon of Choice.
Do you forsee any major updates to GW1 before GW2, and I don't mean new tonics/small changes, I am talking SF/DoA. <-- You're getting one tomorrow.
Do you feel that you ban to easily (no I was not banned) or do not examine the circumstance before banning someone. <--- They don't really talk about this.
A lot of people think that your communication with the community is subpar, do you feel the same and do you plan to improve it. <-- They would never answer this except say they do the best they can.
Why has there been no response on the disater of the mAT. <--- It's par the course. It's in the Automated Tournament rules that lag will happen and if it does tough shit. It was out of their control. The end.

I don't really want to cross post yours simply because they seem too...antagonizing, you know? One of them puts the CR into question which is something I don't want to send.

A lot of them are in general stuff they wouldn't answer with a press there or anything. They're too much DOWN on Anet. Hope you understand. I'll still cross post them but don't expect them to answer them at PAX, lol. :P

I know it was mentioned that no GW2 questions would be addressed, but I thought the above question was really important as it has a lot to do with the underlying philosophy and direction of GW, which was originally envisioned as a competitive game or e-sport (this doesn't have to mean that we ignore pve). I have three questions to follow up on this one.

(1) Magic the Gathering - which was influential on GW design as I understand - runs a very successful Pro Tour system. Why couldn't a similar model be successful for GW? Was it because you knew you were going to start with a clean slate with GW2 and didn't want to invest too heavily in an e-sports system for GW1? (this is a question about the influence of GW2 on guildwars 1 design and PvP organization decisions, not about details of GW2)

(2) Most forums have have had countless debates about the priority of PvE vs PvP. One main problem of course was that skills were linked, and what worked in one case didn't necessarily work in the other - or at least it was often taken as a slight that a PvE build was ruined by PvP balances. Did you see this as being a problem from the start and do you now think it was a mistake making such close ties between PvE and PvP?

(3) Having played a few other MMO's now, one of the things that stands out to me is the amount of player freedom it provides. Many games require a substantial financial (in game) cost to change skill setups on characters making testing and experimentation rather restrictive. GW requires skill unlocks and purchases, but its rather easy to do so and allows unlimited variation after. PvP characters are also an excellent addition to the game that allow players to experience and learn multiple classes much more easily. Are you happy with these decisions and would it be something that you would want to maintain and promote in the future?

Quick question for necrid or earth, are tough questions that are not attacks allowed or are we only permitted to ask softball stuff?

1. Why did ANet decide to completely drop the development of GW1 instead of hiring a team to keep developing content/updates or handing it off to another developer who would work with you?

2. How come there was never a human female El hero added? Of all the other classes there are both male and female repersentitives, save for elementalists, which have a human, a centaur, and an asura.

3. Are there any plans for smaller, cheaper content updates like weapon and armor packs, maybe new skill packs, maybe new quest or explorables, etc?

4. Going back to your original vision for GW, what were the 3 biggest successes and 3 biggest failures in Anet's opinion?

5. What were your biggest regrets in ending major development on GW1?

6. I remember reading somewhere that Anet never planned for things like ectos to be used as high-value items for trading, so why didn't Anet take steps to keep the values of ectos, some dyes, etc down?

7. How come Anet never added hair-style "helmets", or anything like that which could work within the limitations of the system despite the demand for them?

8. There has been a lot of agrivation in the community about how the survivor title works, how come Anet hasn't done anything about it?

9. Somewhere between Prophecies and GW:EN GW has gone from a skill does not equal time game to one where in many cases someone is required to grind and a sense of elitism is starting to come about because of this. In your opnions what mistakes caused the grind-creep and what actions if any are you doing to correct this before you completely abandon active support for guild wars?

10. In Nightfall, a large power-creep came about in the skills the players had to offer, in some cases that meant unless you kept buying the new campaigns you were completely outclassed in pvp, which is something ANet promised would never happen. For example compare armor of frost to frigid armor, with the latter from NF being completely superior to the former from Proph. What steps are anet planning to take to make sure all three compaigns are balanced against one another so one person doesn't have to own all three in order to be competitive?

11. Why was the core sword elite, 100 blades never buffed?

12. It was stated before GW came out that the PvP aspect was supposed to be the main focus of players after they finished the main storyline. However if you look at the numbers, a large percentage of people either stick to PvE or quit the game when they get bored with PvE and never really go into PvP. How much of a failure do you consider this and what does Anet feel were the main reasons despite 2 new campaigns and an expansion that the majority PvE players couldn't be enticed over into PvP? Does Anet have any plans to correct this and make PvP easier or more attractive to the PvE player?

13. In the orignal game, guilds were a part of the backstory but not really that important aside from some PvP. In Factions guilds gained alliances and the luxon/kurzik divide. However in the last campaign and the expansion nothing was really added to bring importance to the guilds or even keep them a part of the story or have any real signifigance in the game. So the question is, where did the "Guild Wars" that GW was named for go, and why did they lose signifigance for devopment in terms of new things do to, impact on the game world, etc?

That's all I have for now.

How well do you think you have supported the PvP community?

How are you going to market and advertise GWII?

Do you plan to use the same methods of communication with the public, CR people reading fan forums, or will you have a centralized forum like WoW?

Will you have large tournaments like the GWWC and the GWFC in GWII?

Will skill balancing be more frequent in GWII as it was ealier in the game's life cycle?

Given that Guild Wars is a game with such a huge variety of gameplay options given to us through factions, missions, quests and story, and the negative feedback that has seemed to be coming through from forums about the amount of grind, especially as it pertains to titles, would Anet ever consider adding titles that are more in tune with gameplay rather than grind, such as a questing title?

Due to the almost complete lack of GW1 support, is there any reason to continue playing the game when the next one is so far off, and with (as it appears) there being no important changes to GW1 whatsoever? The 'monster' update is long overdue, what's to say there won't be the same length of time and imbalance before the next update, and how long will this continue?

They are doing bigger updates per month now. I can tell you that. Linsey's already working on next month's stuff, so.

Also, I'll post this stuff up if we don't get a new page later tonight. I figure when the update goes live we'll have more people asking questions tho.

Why was the design decision about owning towns in Factions made? Owning a town offers VERY minimal benefits, yet many people who are pyschologically driven to get the "most stuff" continue to grind for town ownership or use bots to grind for them. These alliances are run like buisnesses.
Was town ownership created to give those sorts of players something to do, or was it originally just supposed to be something lighthearted and fun?

1. Why do you insist on making people sit in town trying to sell something? Why not create a merchant to recieve merchandise with a set price and sell it to other players? Then if it sells the player can pick up his cash at the merchant.

2. Why not hire a team to create more new content for GW1? People are bored. We need a new elite area for the hard core, some new explorable areas for the curious, new quests for the experience, a few new dungeons, some intermediate areas for the beginners, and a new PvP area. Make a big bonus pack and sell it to us, I realize you can't get something for nothing.

3. Players of GW are pretty creative in their own right. What have they done in the game that suprized you? Where did you say "boy, I didn't see that comming"?

4. What would it take to get storage tabs for mini pets and holiday items that work like material storage?

I would offer my first born for the answers to these questions , but alas that train has left the station.
