Does this sound like an ISP problem

I have been having a weird situation with my internet connection. I have had issues since May it started to degrade and now I am pretty much been dead in the water. I have No device errors and I have changed out all cables. No reports of service disruption in my area. My Modem signals are always strong to the ISP. I have gone thru the phone check numerous times with my ISP. I have also picked up a new modem from my ISP and tried it. I have tired the USB connection on my modem to bypass the Ethernet card. I have brought a working laptop home from work to test it. And also went to different jacks in the house. No malware or programs restricting anything. No antivirus or special Firewall installed. Only basic Windows firewall. I have reformatted my drive. Have you every run across a system that connects then with in 10 seconds drops the DNS server, gateway and winserver. (all digits disappear) I have a buried cable line to my house. My last resort I have set an appointment for Saturday to have the cable company check my connection from my house on Saturday. I pretty much am waiting for them to say it is my end and will have to pay for it. So if anyone can confirm with me that my problem sounds like an ISP problem let me know Thanks


Edit: Forgot to mention I also have analog Cable TV from the same provider no issues at all with it

Okay... so your problem is that the IP adress, Gateway adresses, ect disappear, thus preventing you from having internet?

And do any other computers on your modem experience the same thing?

Though your ISP might have already told you this, go to Start > Run > Type cmd and then hit enter (now you'll have a window popping up with a black background) type ipconfig /all and see if "Autoconfiguration Enabled' is Yes or No.

Yes I went to Bleeping and I also went to Majorgeeks, followed there suggested guides and ran the suggested programs and posted Hijacks. Major geeks responded and said they see nothing. Even PlayNC requested a hijack to review. They saw nothing. I also ran Taruns Toolkit. All scans have come back clean, and they have since my initial reformat. I have had connections during all this time but it has been a horribly lagged connection (at least during GW play) and it has been going downhill since and now it is totally gone. I even brought home a working lap top from work and connected it directly to cable modem I had the exact same results. I do not run a network just one machine connected to a modem to a cable the goes out of the house.

I will try this when I get home don’t remember doing “all” But wouldn't the work laptop work if that was the case? I have manually reset my IP for some reason windows repair connection would not refresh it… it hangs for a few minutes then errors out. I have also manually flushed the DNS. I have even set the connection to manual filled in numbers (DNS/gateway/winserver) rebooted went back in set to auto then rebooted again no change.

It is very frustrating.

Might be the wiring inside your home. Any idea how old the home is?

Built in 1990. Buried line to cable junction box locked on out side of house. Then it goes in from out side into utility room 4 way splitter. (Yes I tired a single line ) . My line for my room was installed when I got cable in November last year. It was a line that goes up the wall in the utility room over a suspended ceiling (bathroom) down into the closet of my office and across the floor to my computer. (Closet door did not clip the line) I have four different boxes in my yard 2 cable one electric and one phone. It is access for the neighbor hood. Earlier this year we did have a new cable company come into town and lay new lines. I am hopping they messed-up and clipped my line. Or bumped the box. From what I read you need an almost perfect connection to have internet. Other then that I had a mole check out my yard for a couple nights this summer.

Have them check the signal strength inside the house. It sounds like it might be due to old wiring.

You may want to check the line in the yard too. Mine wasn't buried that deep, maybe a half inch. Enough to be cut by the mower eventually.

I don't think it's a line problem. In his initial post he said that his modem had a strong connection. What we need to know now, is his setup.

Does your modem function like a router as well? You can figure this out by double-clicking the LAN connection icon in your system tray and going to the support tab. What is your IP address? If it is a local IP, then your modem also functions as a router and your problem might be with double-NAT (two firewalls in succession). It could also be a bad router setup on the LAN side.

If your computer is getting the internet IP address and then losing it, and the router is simply acting as an Ethernet bridge, then the problem is probably inside your system. If this turns out to be the case, I would run memtest over night one night to see if you have a failing chip. If you do, it could be that the system is trying to store your network data in that one location and it is not taking.

After you figure out whether your computer is getting a local or wide IP, let us know.

When I did the phone checks I had a slow connection but it has been lost since. I have a Motorola SB 5101 (I own this one "2 years old") and the other one I picked up to check if my modem went bad is a No name brand cheap china Charter Communications special ($3 a month rental). I have been on the phone with Motorola's help line as well, and they suggested me to try a loaner from the ISP. I have Charter comming over tommorrow... So hopefully it will get resolved. I will post if It gets resolved.

Edit - forgot to mention I did do the factory reset to default on the SB5101 modem as directed from Motorola (did not change a thing)


What "run memtest" are you talking about ? Can it be run from a Basic XP service pack 2 edition. Can't download a thing right now from home.

Ah, you'd have to download it and boot from floppy or CD. The "Ultimate Boot CD" has all kinds of memory tools on it. You simply stick it in and reboot. These are tools that need to be run outside of Windows. I recommend you grab the ISO and burn a copy when your net access returns. This will help you immensely in the future with a wide array of problems you might have.

Now, have you been able to check and see what the IP is when you get it on your computer? Not the modem IP, but the computer's.

After the Cable Tech was at my house for an hour he figured it out. He hooked up his hand held devise and told me the signal looks good. But yet my system still did not work at all. He starred at the error out screens in firefox / explorer. Checked the cmd prompt over an over. Checked pings checked packet transfer. Checked settings in explorer. Called in talked with his support. Scratched his head. Then he said well I am sorry but it must be your system. So I replied I brought a working tested laptop from work and experienced the same thing. Unbelievable I was thinking now what? Well he went into the utility room and where the splicer that splits for the TV’s and internet he unscrewed the internet cable and moved it to a different branch on the splitter. It started working perfectly. Now I never checked this because it was never touched since the cable came and installed the internet. I removed the other lines and tried a new line off the splicer but never did I check the splicer. Funny how his handheld worked but my system would not. it is a four way and only the one does not work. Anyway I am happy, and could play GW for the first time in a long time.

Glad it got fixed, Painbringer. Troubleshooting something like that is never fun, and never easy. But at least it's fixed.

I had a similar issue recently. A booster was added to amplify signals but they put it on incorrectly, and it wasn't needed. When it got removed my cable Internet gained a lot of speed. :P

I think it's better that you let them check into it, because if they break anything; they have to fix it at no cost to you.

One thing to note about cable internet, your splitter MUST be bi-directional and it MUST be at 1000MHz or higher. The standard ones you buy at Walmart or Radio Shack are generally 900MHz and/or one-way. Best Buy has some nice ones for about $10 that are 1000MHz or greater, and are made by some high-end companies like Monster.
