Gate of Pain
steevo301
Hey, I'm having a lot of trouble with the "Gate of Pain" mission in NF. It's usually the Terrorwebs that get me, with their [Meteor Shower]. I'm a D/E, and I'm really getting sick of this mission. Here's the build I've been using:
[Mystic Regeneration] [Vital Boon] [Eremite's Attack] [Mystic Sweep] [Crippling Sweep] [Reap Impurities] [Avatar of Dwayna] [Sunspear Rebirth Signet]
15 Scythe Mastery; 10 Earth Prayers; 8 Mysticism
If anyone has any tips/strategies or different build ideas (I have Proph & NF only) for this mission, I'd appreciate it!

well that builds decent i used something like it when i went through there but it def needs way more [eternal aura] to keep your avatar up perm that should be a decent start and besides that if your in a pug move outta the way and ping a spot outta the [Meteor Shower] if h/h still move outta the way and flag the heros with you

I may be wrong, but I don't think the [Eternal Aura] would be able to keep my [Avatar of Dwayna] up permanently. The avatar doesn't just have to recharge, but it is also DISABLED for 120 seconds.

Take two hero Eles equipped as Earth and Water respectively. Equip the water ele with Ward Against Harm and the earth ele with Ward Against Elements.

Yes, you are wrong. The disabling takes the form of an increased recharge for the avatars. Thus with Eternal Aura you can indeed keep up a form permanently (aside for a second or so downtime while recasting... though this effect may be purely visual... I have not tested it to see if you still have the benefits of the form in that brief interval.

I'm assuming you're using sabway or discordway (three necro heroes) so you don't have much options wrt interrupts?
Meteor showers are very easy to interrupt. Also your build is extremely defensive with three self-heals and an anti-hex elite. You could combine those two facts and replace mystic regeneration and vital boon with cheap, fast-recharging, mesmer (or, at a pinch, warrior) interrupts, and use Avatar of Lyssa (or Balthazar) instead of Avatar of Dwayna.
The tactic would be to start the attack, then monitor the Terrorwebs by keeping switching target between the two (rarely three) Terrorwebs in the enemy group, and interrupting their meteor showers. Most likely you'll have them killed before Meteor Shower recharges, so you'll only need to interrupt each one once. Using Avatar of Lyssa would give you a decent bonus damage boost against slow casts such as Meteor Shower and Call to Torment.
EDIT: Also flagging your h/h's a couple of aggro circles away and pulling the terrorwebs slowly will likely get the terrorwebs to waste their meteor showers before your h/h's engage, but then there's a risk of you getting snared and killed while you're not supported by your h/h healers.

it is purely visual..you still are rewarded the benefit as long as you are recasting it before it fully ends ie.. with [Avatar of [email protected]] you will loose a hex and be healed while casting the avatar again

The build looks ok-ish.
I think IIRC I ran a build similar to this:
D/Mo, 16 Scythe, 13 Myst, 8 Protection Prayers.
[Avatar of Lyssa][Eternal Aura][Heart Of Fury][Protective Spirit][Eremite's Attack][Mystic Sweep][Victorious Sweep][Pain Inverter]
Had sabway heroes set up, with Fire, Earth, Prot and Healer henches (I think, lol). Tactics was simple. Flag party fairly close, I go in (pre protted) pull spiders, cast [pain inverter] (an Ele's worst fcn nightmare) and move on to the next one. Got masters no problem.
Good luck
Edit: soz, I should learn to read properly... No EotN means no Pain Inverter.. You can always swop out your secondary to Me and take a couple of interrupts (as stated before). This will make things more difficult though and you need to flag your party members a little better (more seperated) but still doable)

If you have Norgu, put him as an interrupter with [Power Block][Power Spike][Power Leak][Power Drain] and a few more interrupts.
If you take Zhed or Sousuke, give them [Power Drain] for e-management and for interrupting.
You could also take Olias as a mm but be sure to watch him so his minions don't over aggro.
For hench take Odurra, Sogolon, Herta and Mhenlo or Kihm.

Not too sure how effective it will be but you might want to try Jin with [Broad Head Arrow] as well...

I herd reading comprehension wuz hard...
You could bring some kind of water ele, with [Ward Against Harm], reducing fire damage for probably over 50%. Bringing also Ward against Elements is useless with the other one up, as armor can't stack that much. Consider some kind of Water/earth ele with Ward of Stability in case you fail to interrupt. Of course, when cast, the heroes&henchies must be flagged in the center of the wards.
Norgu is also a fine choice with the skills proposed + perhaps Mantra of Flame, although I'm not sure he can interrupt the Liquid Flame from the torture web with a 1/2 second speed.
Seeing how there's AoE damage and pressure, I'd reccommend Dunkoro with [light of deliverance] as elite. Since mobs have very lame self healing, bring the defensive henchies that you wish. Bringing a couple of interrupts yourself and you're set. Surviving here is more important than finishing mobs fast.
When facing the Torture Web Dryders, try find somewhere in your or your heroes builds to fit [shelter] as it can really shine in this mission. Bringing a MM could help a lot when not facing the nukers, but then you'll have to lose your interrupter or your warder... Give it a try, my guess is that at any case, Norgu with interrupting skills has a more important role than a Warder, so you can fit a MM if you're used to using one.

I my opinion flagging H/H can be a key to success here. I usually put MM on the front, SS on the left behind mm, then half the range back I place henchies. Behid the henchies (half aggro, sometimes more) I place dunkoro. When I do it with melee I am as well in the front, if not I stick at the hench level. If by bad luck terrors cast shower on 4 henchies Dunkoro will keep them alive without being hit himself. I done this mission with various often crappy builds and so far it all works fine even on HM.
