Hero Team for PvE
Nosveratau
Hi All
Just bought Guild Wars a few weeks back so I guess I am really a newbie at all of this, at the moment I am playing the Nightfall campaign but I also bought access to all the other areas although havent looked at them yet.
I have been working my way through the story and I am currently about to try Gate of Pain, I am a solo player using Henchmen and Heroes only, I know, why buy an MMO if yer only playing yourself, but I like the game and like the fact that I can play on my own with the H/H group. My character is a Fire Elementalist and the heroes I have at level 20 are..
Koss, Dunkoro, Melonni (Well lvl18), Acolyte Sousuke, Zhed Shadowhoof, Master of Whispers, General Morgahn.
My current group of choice is Dunkoro (Healer), Masters (Necro) and Sousuke (Fire Ele) and I change heroes depending if the mission requires a specific Hero.
A few of the missions have given me lots of trouble but I get there in the end, although not at master level just standard, when I eventually finish Nightfall I plan on going onto Prophicies >> Factions then Eye of the North, then have a shot of the elite dungeons and stuff. Sorry just realised I am rambling on a bit, the purpose of this post is to just ask a question, does anyone ever use a particular set of heroes with specific skills that say can do all of Prophicies or Factions or EOTN without swapping much out, same with the dungeons and stuff? Is there an ultimate heroes team for these situations??
Sorry for the long post.
Cheers

eximiis
Sabway = 3 necro.
1 minion master with protection prayers.
1 spiteful necro with some channeling skills.
1 weapon of remedy necro.
This team abuse the primary of necromancers to fuel high energy/low recharge skills. Pretty much the favored builds ppl use.
Discord way = 3 necro.
Pretty much the same abusing thing but the 3 necros spam Discord for huge damage.
Paraway = 2 paragons. 1 order dervish. (usually u are a paragon too)
2 paragons with spear skills and chants.
------------------------------------------
In my opinion, all build should be fueled by a profession that can spam "save yourselves". This make sure every skills to be spam and kill things fast.
I would suggest you to get Olias in Prophecie and go EOTN for additional heroes.
To be honest, almost every heroes can do the job in pve.

Definitely the ones eximiis mentioned are very powerful, but you'll need to pick up the extra necros.
In case you want to see more specifics you can always search these forums, or pop over to PvX wiki.
Enjoy the game!

Racway; for physicals:
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10254869
Somewhere in Sab's post there's reference to Discordway, but I couldn't find original post from a quick search.
Basic consensus is to use ranged heroes; melee AI has pathing issues (just observe Devona for example when charging into battle), they have trouble finding their target, moving through targets and fleeing from AoE, not to mention that with a recent update they tend to be very aggressive, so it's basically better to use casters/ranged.
Minions come incredibly handy in most missions, areas and I guess dungeons too, except maybe those full of jade and mursaat that can wipe the minion army in seconds, or where there is lack of corpses. Enemy AI goes for the less armored and with less hp allies, so it's natural that they'll focus on the minions and leave you mostly alone.
What you basically want in any hero team, is some way to reduce the damage the mobs deal, using skills such as Wards, [Aegis], applying Weakness and general shutdown depending on the area (daze for caster heavy, blind for martial heavy, etc), and some way to deal enough damage to the mobs, to overcome any healing they may get and kill them. This can come from raw damage from a single character, armor ignoring damage, or from skill boosts, like a mob hexed with [barbs] and getting hammered by two or three physicals (which is technically armor ignoring damage).
And when you get a little more experienced you'll also learn that fire damage, from nukers, is not armor ignoring and thus becomes pretty pathetic in the higher end areas of the game, particularly Hard Mode, and that eles are best doing party support through daze, blind, bocking and damage reduction skills.
Hope it helps.

What I've been running with lately are 3 ranger heroes (2 barrage, one ebon dust aura),and my rit human running this:
[mindbender][wielder's zeal][arcane echo][great dwarf weapon][sundering weapon][earthbind][wielder's remedy][flesh of my flesh].
All three rangers bring [body shot]. One brings [mark of pain] and [rigor mortis]. At least 1 of the rangers should have [poison tip signet].
You can set up the rest of their skills with your best judgment, and the rit build has lots of alternatives, as well. The rit keeps GDW on them constantly, with Sundering on at least one attacking party member.
For henchmen, I'd choose 2 monks, and 2 attackers (ranged if possible). The only places I haven't been able to use this setup are places where you can't knock stuff down. Otherwise, you can pwn everything.

Listen to Alf. Mob control ftw, which means you want powerful area-based effects on your team - offensive as well as defensive. Paragons and Necromancers, due to their energy mechanics, truly shine in PvE.
Fire Magic will get you through Normal Mode just fine. Partying in HM, you'll find yourself best suited speccing into the powerful defensive Magicks...
[Maelstrom][ward against melee][deep freeze]... to be as cool as Sousuke ([Assassin's Promise]) you would need to pick up Factions tho
Oh and ABUSE TEH **** OUT OF PVE SKILLS.
Enjoy the game!

Well, nevermind the popular hero builds that presume you have all the heroes and most of the skills. Just use what you have like you are doing. The important thing is to learn how things work and solve problems with the resources you have, not just depend on canned builds or PvE only skills that you don't have anyway.
My one big suggestion Nosveratau is to include more in the way of interrupt and cripple. In RoT and elsewhere interrupt is much more important than direct damage. Shut down the target. Cripple the target or slow it down if you can. Shut it down, cripple it, Melonni or Koss can then easily beat it to death. Rangers are good at interrupt.

Hi All
Wow thanks for all the replys, spent a while last night and got myself olias, as I said I have all the other areas unlocked just havent done any of the missions for them yet. Tried gate of pain 4 times last night, the big groups of demons are not a problem and I managed to work a strategy for beating the Dryders that use meteor, but the other dryders the ones for the mission, seem to kill me with one shot (WTF!!!!). Can someone help me with a Player / Hero build that will be succesfull for the rest of the nightfall missions? My Primary is an Fire Elementalist but I am willing to change her skills around for a better build.
Cheers

[shelter]
[ward against harm]
[broad head arrow]
All work extremely nice for that mission. No don't bring yourself as ele with a bow, bring a ranger hero, for example
.
The following mission, Gate of Madness, has a lot of discussion in the unofficial wiki page on how to beat it:
http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Talk..._%28mission%29
Btw that has spoilers :P.
I use in there a war to take damage from Shiro and some manageable prots, like Spirit Bond on a Minionmaster hero.
For the last mission you just need massive condition removal.

Hi Alf
Thanks for the reply but I dont think I have access to those skills as I have only been playing Nightfall at the moment, but I will have a look when I get home from work.
A friend of mine has two accounts, at the moment he is only working on one of them but he has said that if I wanted he would log in with his spare account and group with me for the missions, although he himself wouldnt play as he would be playing with his other account, he said I would get to use his heroes, although it would reduce my party size down to 7 playable characters instead of 8, is the possible? Can I use his heroes aswell and would it really be any advantage over me, 3 heroes and henchmen to me and 6 heroes?
Cheers

just PM me....can send you hero builds for pretty much every profession - even the less popular ones ('sin etc.)
IGN: payne storm or AB dervish lol
can't guarentee that you will have the skills but if not just go RA get some balth faction and unlock them so your heroes can use them..^^ easy
but the bars are easily good enough to knock aside something as pathetic as GoP NM - wait till you do it in HM(spoiler) the dryders hit for 300+ on squishy targets - gl lol
oO and welcome ^^

Arrrrrgggghhh
OK Gate of Pain is really a pain, lol. Took the suggestion and added some interupts to my build Ele/Mes and added an interupt Mesmer GWEN (Spent a couple of hours playing in EOTN to get her, lol).
As for mobs.
Demon groups, not a problem, although my DPS is down a little so takes longer to kill them and the Insanity ones manage to Spawn twins a few times, lol. Patience and they all die.
Terrorweb Dryder, gawd they are no threat once you interupt Meteor Shower, so easy.
Emissary of Dhuum, well as its a Warrior Class and my whole group is Ranged these guys spend most of there time chasing my guys down, no threat at all by the time its taken a swipe my healers have already healed its target it dies pretty quickly.
Tortureweb Dryder, ah the problem guy, Fireball and Liquid Flame, I can interupt Fireball but just cant seem to interupt Liquid Flame, and when it strikes most of my party are at deaths door (Normally my hench monks die, Dreadfull Pain is also another pain here!! This leaves Dunkoro to do the rezzing and healing till the monks get back on there feet) Well after killing all of the Emissary of Dhuums, cleaning out all mobs and all but one Tortureweb Dryder, my party had sustained several deaths, so what happens, well the last Tortureweb Dryder casts Liquid Flame and insta kills my entire party, arrrgggghhhh, yes I was pissed.
After that experience I have concluded that some sort of group wide damage reduction applied just before the combat should be enough to complete this quest, just have to fins something now, lol

Are you in a Guild?
Does a Guildie have a Mesmer?
If yes, ask for help if it's that much of a problem! A human played Mesmer with Power Block and a few other interrupts stops a terrorweb in it's tracks. Slow-casting fire nukes aren't "ftw" now are they, Mr. Dryder? You'll also get an additional 3 heroes with another human also, which at least is better than henchmen.
You have to take Dunkoro for that mission, ensure he's properly set up with a good and tested monk build, I would suggest a build such as that in the Stickied Guide, Section 8, FAQ #1.
If the Emissary of Dhuum gets too lucky with your Monks, try to Blind him. If he can't hit he can't score a kill. Possibly take a Necro to lay Insidious Parasite and Spiteful Spirit on him instead for a quick hex-induced death.
Henchmen:
Don't forget to find out what the henchmen have...try to use henchmen which work well with the skills your party has! For instance, Herta has Ward Against Melee and Stoning. The ward will help protect you from Warrior & Dervish torment creatures, and also the Emissaries, and Stoning will knockdown weakened foes, so if you're taking a method of weakness application Herta isn't a bad choice.
If you don't have a Mesmer hero, and a guildie can't help you, consider Odurra. She has Cry of Frustration and Leech Signet to interrupt and Empathy to slap on the Emissaries. If you have primarily an all-caster party, try Sogolon...he has a couple of party-wide heals, party-wide condition removal and another signet-based heal on his bar. I've seen far better paragon builds, but as far as henchmen go, he's not that bad. I would always take Mhenlo over Khim as a monk (second to Dunkoro) in Gate of Pain. Kihm's bar is full protection, and a bit expensive and spammy, and at least Mhenlo has Word of Healing.

That's what I give dunkoro if i HAVE TO take him:
[build prof=Mo/Me pve name="Dunkoro" box heal=12+1+1 divine=10+1 insp=8][word of healing][dwaynas kiss][patient spirit][cure hex][dismiss condition][leech signet][power drain][restore life][/build]
Good healing + e-managment + interrupts = win

Good healing + e-managment + interrupts = win Only reason I don't like giving a Monk Hero interrupts is because you have to have it on Guard. I prefer having mine set to Passive / No Attack, which doesn't work with any skill which targets a foe, to my knowledge.

But when they are on passive = avoid, they like to run in circles (;d) and flee from enemies, even if they can just outheal it.
But if you are having problems with Gate of Pain, the EASIEST mission on RoT (yes, it is the easiest, you just have to pull and not rush mobs), get a guildie with... RANGER. I finished GoP two days ago on masters with Broad Head Arrow + standard interrupts + epidemic + volley. 2 dryders were shut down just by me alone, while heroes were busy killing them.

I always have my heroes on guard, don't see a problem with that. Inspiration is a great e-manage line that heroes can actually use (unlike GoLE).

If you set him on guard, he will wand or normal attack the enemies. This means you have to limit yourself to ranged weapons for him. Otherwise if he is wielding a caster sword like Rajazan's Fervor he would run to the front lines to melee like Koss.
The other problem is, if he is set to guard, he doesn't kite from melee attackers as fast as when he is set to passive, especially if he is happily wanding his enemies with full health.
If he is on passive, all he does is concentrate on his allies and kite from melee attackers instead of wasting his time normal attacking.

I know the difrences between those settings, I just dont see a problem with him chucking some spears, or wanding. But that's just me.

I highly doubt that. Neither in GoM or AG you're being hit for 400+ from a single spell that casts in half a second.
The bonus groups have each 3 dryders. Such AoE is not seen on the two following missions, most being 2 Pain Titans if you slay the abominations at same time.
I consider it by far the hardest of RoT missions. GoM has at least five ways/tips that make it easy, like avoiding the Titans path, pulling Wraiths, capping shrines with flags, pulling one the two bosses alone and keep him where he loses aggro, letting Shiro do his crap damage and kill Lich, etc.
And AG is just cake easy. Heck, even the quest all through Domain of Secrets is harder than that.

Don't fall for all the hype about these common builds. It's best to create your own team builds based on the area. (It's not difficult. Read skill descriptions and use wiki to see what skills mobs use so you can bring counters.) Or at least tweak the common builds through experimentation. For example, I've vanquished nearly all of Elona using just henchmen healers. Now that heroes use Weaken Armor correctly I've been using a Minion bomber/curses necro and two Savannah Heat eles (both have room for a couple utility skills) with my warrior. It's killed faster than any of these builds that people automatically spew when answering hero build questions.

Not in HM it hasn't.

Hey all
Gate of Pain is getting on my nerves so I am taking a break from it and playing Eye of the North, I am now just past the quest "A little Help" and about to do GOLEM, after my encounter with the Destroyers in " A Little Help" I realised that my Ele and my Hero Ele's well were useless against them as reading the Wiki I found that they are immune to burning and have a high resistance to Fire, its a bit of a pain, anyway going to try and play with my build to see if i can get it working against destroyers, but if anyone has any suggestions on a good Destroyer killing team (H/H only) then its more than appreciated.
Cheers
Nos
Hey all
Well as I said, after licking my wounds from not being able to kill the Gate of Pain mission I decided to play Eye of the North, and well I am dissapointed, just completed it with H/H and I have to say the whole EOTN line for me was easier than the Gate of Pain Mission (Although just think I need to get my build down for that mission). All I used to complete this game well from GOLEM up was 3 LoD monks with Protective Spirt and Extinguish. GOLEM was easy no point talink about it.
I have heard that heart of the shiverpeak is hard for an H/H group, but all I did was focused target of all three monks onto myself, they spammed PS and healed me while I run the keg barrels, Cyndr didnt even bother about my henchies, so when his Armour went down well he was easy to kill.
Destructions Depths (By far the hardest mission of EOTN) several DPs were had by all members but basically I won this mission by targeting one GOLEM with one MONK, they spammed PS and healed, set GOLEM on Melee and my group basically used them as sheilds while using ranged combat to help the GOLEMS kill the destroyers.
A Time for Heroes, I am still looking for the mission to kill "The Great Destroyer", the thing I killed wasnt very great, LoD, PS and Extinguish rule in this mission, me, two warriors, Eve and Herta basically killed all the destroyers then the Great Destroyer while the monks kept us alive..
I know some people will frown for using 3 LoD Monks, yes a little overkill but it was my strategy and it worked, being an Ele primary I have to make sacrafices and come up with plans to keep me alive, lol.
Well now back to complete nightfall.

Cheers

Hey all
Well as I said, after licking my wounds from not being able to kill the Gate of Pain mission I decided to play Eye of the North, and well I am dissapointed, just completed it with H/H and I have to say the whole EOTN line for me was easier than the Gate of Pain Mission (Although just think I need to get my build down for that mission). All I used to complete this game well from GOLEM up was 3 LoD monks with Protective Spirt and Extinguish. GOLEM was easy no point talink about it.

Good Job finishing EOTN without much problems, I hope you can finally beat those Dryders
And one more thing, EOTN is about the Dungeons, so if you really want some challenge, try those

Hi All
Sorry I feel as though I am giving you a running commentary on my progress.
Well tried the Gate of Madness mission last night, got to the Lich, killed him, captured all the shrines with no death penalty, took on shiro, got him down to just under 1/4 health left, then one by one all my H/H started dying, thought the mission was easy up until that point, I was a little annoyed! Wont get a chance to play again until wednesday, oh well. On a side note have been playing the prophicies missions aswell, decided to play how it was meant to be done and only using henchies and no heroes, I just finished Riverside Province, I did notice that the henchmen dont seem to want to attack the target I want at times, what I can say is playing Nightfall first, you do take the heroes for granted, its quite different only playing with henchies, just no control, but really enjoyable.

Second: When you cap all shrines go back to the "door" from which you came in, flag your warrior there and move your party about an aggro circle away. If you do this right shiro will only attack your warrior while you kill him. That way his most deadly weapon (Impossible Odds) will be useless (its an aoe).

It was meant to be played with other people so I don't think it's "cheating" if you use heroes

Hey Washi
Thanks for the advice, using Wild Blow, Shiro didnt stand a chance, completed it easily with no Death Penelty on any H/H or myself. Abbadons Gate was easy too, although I was mucking around with my Ele build and reset the points to zero, erm yes I forgot to set them back again, couldnt figure out why i wasnt doing any damage ![]() Cheers Nos |
