I have a NF character which was moved to LA and then to ascalon.
do i have to start the prophecies mission chain from the start or is there a way to take a mission along the way ?

In Prophecies you can do any mission you like in any order (with the exception of the southern shiverpeak missions, in which case you have to be ascended, i think)

it is recommended to be infused tho as from iron mines on it gets mursaat heavy

Unlike in Factions or Nightfall, you can play any mission of which you have the outpost. Starting from Lion's Arch you can get the quest Report to the White Mantle which will take you to D'Alessio Seaboard which is the mission immediately after your arrival in Lion's Arch in the storyline.

or you can get to Beacon's Perch (backwards from LA) and then go out the south gate, sorry - little joke there.
From Beacon's Perch you can get a run to Droknar's Forge and go forward through the Southern Shiverpeaks missions to the Fire Islands.
