Questions on power trading, is it better then farming?
runite ringleader
Hello there. I have vigourously done farming, reached 1 mil and then tried power trading for a few days. Here are my thoughts on both.
Farming:
A constant steady flow of cash, the farmer usually gets a good amount of cash an hour at around 20kish for light farms and 50kish for expert farms. Farms are based upon the experience the user has in the farm (in some farms). Often a-net nerfs farms to stop people getting to rich and / or to stop the gw economy from being turned into mush
Power Trading
Heard it was quite good. Went into Kamadan, searched through the party search, spams in AD1, etc etc. Bought a Q9 Voltaic Spear for 100k + 60e, spam WTS.. etc. etc. for a few hours. First good deal was a selling a torment shield for 100k + 25e
My question is that farming generates a steady flow of cash, power trading high-end has a chance of a big cash spike every now and again, but when it comes down to it, it depends on luck, getting to the right person, PM'ing him the offer and he happens to sell it cheap, WTB something and someone sells to you. etc.
I have been doing power trading for like 3 days now, but buying armbraces and high-end things for cheap is very rare, and it seems like its simply not worth it. And people try to scam me, tell me to drop my item on the ground, which is also seriously annoying
Questions:
How do you guys make good deals in kamadan? Do you look for a good deal to be posted in party search / trade chat or look for that deal by spamming WTB etc etc..
Some people have said that armbraces are good to power trade... but i cannot find a seller to sell to me for a decent cheap price for me to sell higher, how do u find decent deals?
Obviously, the point of this is to buy low and sell high, only problem is that I find it is hard to find someone who will sell low enough for you to make a decent profit, and it takes ages for me to sell my item at the optimal price, is it me or bad luck?
Do u often find cheap deals off power traders and / or those who have freshly farmed the item?
Shall i only spam my high-end trade offers in kamadan, or are there other good trading hubs also?
Is power trading, considering the constant flow of cash from farming, more profitable overall then farming?
Is 1 mil to use in trading enough to make good profits?
I dont care about prestige at the mo with my chars until i get rich enough to do more power trading, I am thinking about getting to 5 Million, then spending about 2 million on it on rares for my monk, but which shall i do, trade or farm for this 5 mill?

To make a lot of money at it, you buy low, and sell at below normal so you sell fast. Selling at below normal means people will see it as a good deal and buy it fast.
You didn't buy it low (from what I have seen) and you weren't going to sell it for a profit unless you spent a long time waiting for a rich, inexperienced buyer.
Unless you know the market of items VERY well, stick to farming.

Power trading is by far better cash. With that said though you have to know what your doing. You need to learn the market and know when to hold off and when to dive right in. If you go down the power trading route dont start off in highend, it could very easily make you broke. Stick to low end till you get the hang of it and learn the market. In the end farmers make steady cash but its so much less and you have to do so much more. Power trading is for the lazy people in my opinion and there reward is much greater.

Farm runs net you around 10k per hour if they're good. If they're excellent, you'll manage 15-20k, but i've yet to seen such run (i don't count on rare item farms - such crap got the economy on the level it is now).
So if you want to FARM 5 million gold, get ready to do repeatable mind numbing actions over and over for quite a while.
If you want to power trade for that cash, learn the market.
My advice is to do NEITHER. Play the game, you'll have enough cash for whatever you NEED just by doing missions and quests

As far as power trading vs power farming, trading can make you much richer much faster, but it can also make you broke very quickly. I have certain items I like to deal in that tend to average me 100-120k/hour, but the trick is knowing when and where to work. The best advice I can give if you want to try your hand at playing the economy is to start small, always watch out for the going prices on things, and always, always be on the lookout for a good deal.
When it comes down to it, power trading makes far better money because the skill level associated with it is much higher than for farming.
BTW, where the heck are you making 20-50k an hour farming?

3 Man foundry + city, a garantee on at least 2 titan gems and 4 margonite gems with titans being 5k each = 10k and margonites being 4k each = 16k. So a definite profit of around 26k. With drops and stuf your can net another 10k making 36k. A nice profit every hour. Only thing though is that u need to spend hours and hours trying to get good at this farm to start making a decent profit with it. EXP 600s can do this in around 1 hour foundry + city HM

Power trading beats everything. You just need to know all the current prices so when you see someone selling something for 10-15e cheaper you buy it and resell it. Most of the time i won't even spam WTB i'll just wait until i see something.
PS. Unless you bought that voltaic spear 2 weeks ago you got screwed bad. Req 10 voltaics are around 100k +15-25e

This isn't entirely a 'get rich quick' type of game. Having farmed your first mil, you already know that. Most people buying any item 100K+ have checked the sale threads, and one would assume, have watched trade spam for quite a while before deciding to either buy or sell.
From what I've seen; there are two types of buyers. 1) Players who know the market and are waiting for a good deal on an item they'd like. 2) Players who really really really want and item NOW. It's a matter of finding the right WTB. Take a shot, you never know. Same goes for sellers. 1) Players looking to make a buck or two from a trade. 2) Players who really really really want their money NOW.
As with your drops, it's sheer luck my friend. Keep tossing those PMs out there, you're sure to hit the nail on the head eventually.
If you have the time and mindset, keep on farming. You'll get your nice drops, sell them at market price and keep on trucking. Also, you need to start thinking; what am I making this money for? What are you going to do with that 1mil in the chest and your 10 stacks of E? Is what you're doing worth the time and effort you've put in?

powertrade > farming. (if you know the market)
Expand your assets by investing in highend items, dont just limit yourself to materials.

powertrading is inconsistent but it can land you major cash if you know the market. Farming on the other hand is consistent money but no big spike in your income

Yang Whirlwind
Power trading requires a knack and a lot of careful monitoring of the marked(s) - not to mention a stack of cash/ecto/z-keys to start of with
Farming on the other hand can be taught to a slightly retarded pet

Since farming depends more on luck that power trading I would guess its down to the ability of the player.
Farm efficiently and accept what drops or power trade where if your really good and can remember prices follow trends etc then you should make more.
So what are you better at because that's what its down to

Don't worry OP I'm in the same boat as you, tried power trading never worked for me, tried farming... way too boring, heres the secret:
Special Drop event for Sweets/alcohol= FARM LIKE NO TOMMORROW
Anet Buffs a skill which leads to glitch (ghost Running)= FIND WAYS TO USE IT AND MAKE CASH (Ghost running is to Frog Scepters as GH teleport trick was to End game Greens :P)
Thats the only way I make money now a days.

learn to play pvp and sell a tonne of zkeys at 5 k each, you can probably get 15 K this way in an hour of doing ladder matches, and around 80K+ from tournaments (which take 2-3 hours) plus it isnt as boring as farming or sitting in kamadan with your thumb up your ass
Hyper.nl
You can only 'powertrade' on markets you know in and out. If not, you'll probably get disappointed.
Dante the Warlord
Either way is repetitive. Most people do both, but would you rather play the game and get money or spend HOURS spaming WTS XXX WTS XXX? My bet is that you would get bored, so go farm instead.
