Is there a list of words you can't say in GW somewhere?
Aeon221
I seem to get banned for swearing a lot, and since I'm in the midst of a 162 hour ban for swearing, I figure I should peruse a list of words that I'm not allowed to say.
I still don't understand why people who freak the hell out about swearing can't just use the goddamn filter, but hey, I guess things don't have to make sense.
So, is there a list somewhere?

Words you wouldn't say to your mother.
Thats about it.
Thats about it.

If you can't tell the difference between profanity and non-profanity, then we can't help you.
Instead of cussing in a public area (Local Chat and Ally Chat come to mind), keep it in say Team (if with Guildies or Allies) or Guild Chat (if your guild allows this sort of thing).

Turn on the swear filter. Anything blanked out, you aren't allowed to say.
Richardt
That's a good method, but remember the chat filter does filter out Sony
(or it used to).

I think like common sense would be the way to go. I too don't know why people don't use the chat filter. But I think attacking races and religions and other players is probably more likely to get you banned than just swearing. These attacks are harder to catch in a chat filter. Simply the Golden Rule comes to mind. Sounds kind of corny but being nice is not that hard.

I agree that anyone can use a filter.
I cannot see why its so important to use profanity in a game...sounds like a personal problem to me..get help.

its called common courtesy, respect, and common sense. if those alone cant tell you what words are appropriate or not, then i guess it just boils down to pure ignorance on your part.

ITT: people telling op he needs help because swearing is bad, m'kay.
there's nothing wrong with swearing, but some people do get offended by it. if that's the case maybe they should take responsibility for their sensitivity and play with the chat filter on.

OK, the mom analogy didn't work. How about this--if it's a word the little old ladies and nuns in church would be shocked by, it's probably not OK to say in the chat in GW. If it's on George Carlin's list of things you can't say on TV, you can't say them in the chat. If it's in urban dictionary, it's not always something you can't say, but it's likely to be something you'd want to avoid, especially if it involves alternative words for sex, sex organs/private parts, pooping, or peeing.

If you need to let off steam sometimes then typing stuff really dont do it tbh. If you gotta let off some steam just yell out loud irl, and pehaps go hit something (solid wall right next to my comp ftw')
But tbh, just dont swear when around public places (trade, general and pug team chat). Guild and teams with guildies shouldnt be a problem unless they dont like it either ofc, but you prolly know if they mind it or not. In public, you dont know if anyone mind it. Chance is someone do'.

Also I enjoy teasing people. Who doesn't find it entertaining to call someone else a stinking crotch monkey or a filthy tapir shit monger or an anal refugee?
I mean, it's not like I sit in Kamadan spamming shit over and over again. I get creative with it. I deal with a lot of stress, and I enjoy logging in and entertaining myself from time to time. It's cheaper than beer, and less violent than beating someone up! But apparently that's not cool. Am I really supposed to restrain myself to 19th century style comments? "Heavens to Betsy!" "Oh lawdy!" "Filthy ni^h^h^h^h^ot that one". Queen Victoria is dead!
And seriously folks, if you grew up on base, you'd also have a "warped" idea of what words are appropriate. I don't see why other people can't just have their chat filter on at all times if they're liable to get offended. It's on by default! Why touch it?
Any way, this is getting too discussiony for this forum. My goal was to find out where Anet's Thought Police stored their List of Phrases Liable To Get You Banned (Again). Apparently no such repository exists. Thanks and goodnight.

There are things common in this culture that are generally considered 'bad' by the majority of people. I'm also amused at your use of an absolute to declare something is subjective. I'm one person who doesn't think it's entertaining at all to spam obnoxious things to other people. Not my idea of fun, and not most people's idea of fun to be on the receiving end--if you've said stuff like that repeatedly, I can understand why people have reported you, especially if you did that to people who don't know you and your unique sense of humor. |
i don't see the hypocrisy or falseness in objectively defining something as subjective.
KIDGOOCH
The OP typed the words in to get a reaction from people, or to express his frustration with something. Either way, the OP still took the time to type the thing in...
If you get banned for doing something, stop doing it

Alright, I felt that I should probably respond to this, mostly from the OP considering himself a "devout Catholic". To start with, I'm pretty sure the definition of "devout Catholic" doesn't include:
So, maybe you should reflect on what sort of morality you really align yourself to, perhaps stay awake in church at some point in time.
Or just ask people to call you what you find entertaining to tease them with. Unless I'm mistaken, I can't really think of a person who might pride themselves on being a "stinking crotch monkey" or "anal refugee"....

Look at it this way, they're just words. Words on your monitor. Words that you can ignore by putting me on ignore or relying on the word filter designed to protect your fragile, fragile mind. Have you ever been to New York? Good lord, I advise you to flee post haste, the words will poison you forever! You and that fuzzy wuzzy Podunk Wisconsin Flyover State mentality, aww, it'll be gone forever.
Hey staffers, you can lock this thread anytime, it's basically a discussion at this point. I guess I was sorta trolling, but I did want to know if there was a list somewhere. There isn't, so case closed. If you leave it open, I'm liable to start taunting people. I do that, sez Anet. Seriously, I tried to be good, but this is getting too tempting.

I am bewildered because the answer is blindingly obvious.
Most countries have these things called schools maybe you have heard of them.
Now in schools there are people who teach other people things.
In my school we learned English and mostly the English we learned was perfectly acceptable for communicating with people.
If you stick to those there isn't a problem so why ask.
HawkofStorms
It's not so much what you say, but how you say it.
A random "red engine" if when you get a lag spike, die, etc isn't a big deal.
Spaming "red engine you noob" in a whisper or talking about how you love Hitler in RA international is a bad idea.
The real test is... if your langauge is hostile and threatening, to the point where it could be constituted as a legal assault/intentional inflection of emotional distress, as defined by what a reasonable person would consider behavior "so outrageous that it is completely outside standard socially acceptable behavior."

You can get banned for pretty much anything that is slightly offensive in real life.
If you're unlucky, you'll get banned for saying stuff such as: "You fail in real life", as some people like to make up stories how emotionally unstable they are in real life, and thus some retarded mod/dev gets emo on him aswell, and decides to ban you for a few days...
Banning system in GW fails, your best shot at not getting banned is simply turning off all chat, and simply put "PM me" at every line you decide to type in all chat.
+
This pretty much goes back to how the chat filter fails, and shut be able to be customized (Enter words yourself you prefer you wouldn't like to see), so the bible thumpers under us have no reason to report us when we say: "Fukcing Christ" in all chat...
