The only way that one Hero would outperform another Hero is if their attributes are higher due to Profession/Runes.
If my Tahl uses a Prot Headpiece, she's going to have better Prots
If my Dunk uses a Heal Headpiece, he's going to have better Heals
That's IT. As long as the Heroes are runed/sigged the same, with the same skillbar and the same attribute spread, the only way they don't perform the same is because the player bringing the Hero has them set on Attack / Guard / Avoid, or if they are using a weapon set that doesn't complement their attributes and skillbar. PERIOD. End of discussion.
As far as my personal preference, I like a varied party. After playing with very few non-human choices for henchman (Talon Silverwing and the Wallows in Factions being exceptions), I like having a Dwarf, Asura, Centaur, Norn, and Charr in my party if possible. It breaks up the tedium that is the Human restriction in the game.
