Um...China? India? Anywhere in Southeast Asia perhaps?
No offense to any Asians, I don't intend any, but I'm not aware of any specific place it's modeled after.

I just flipped through my Collector's Edition Factions box and didn't come up with anything.
I'm with Katsumi - unless some dev specifically answered a question like that in their talk, I'd guess it's just a generic Asian design.

"Rooftops" (one of the winning entries at the "Into the Pixel" digital art show at E3 2006) and "Urban Canal" (Master Award: Best Cityscape—Expose 4) were inspired by the Kowloon Walled City, the most densely populated place on Earth until it was demolished in the early nineties. Fifty thousand people inhabited a few square blocks of the most bizarre yet fascinating architectural structures, a miracle of human survival, self-governing, and coexistence. I would like to revisit this concept and do it justice as gaming platforms will soon be capable of handling that amount of 3D geometry. |

Wow, fascinating. It's a shame that place had to be torn down. I understand the reasoning for it, but it would be great to have historically preserved it.
Found some cool pics here: shows life in it.

I don't think I'll look at Cantha the same way again.

Heh, me too, but I'm ok with it.
You can really see where the inspiration came from with those pictures...it's amazing.
