so when gw2 come out, is gw1 gonna be dead? i see zones with absoultely no one sometimes, and im assumign that when gw2 is released its just gonna have fewer players.
will there be enough time for me to accomplish what i want to before the games out? maybe like 20-25 max titles, assuming ive just made a new guy

Simple answer is that no one knows.
If you assume that GW2 has higher requirements to run and that not everyone can play the new game then there will be some staying with gw1 as long as the servers remain.
Other will just not like gw2 again they may stay in gw.
Since the advent of heroes the game is easily playable solo so even when players are hard to find you will be able to continue getting the titles.
I expect the week the preview of GW2 becomes active gw1 will be empty not that I need to ne psychic to predict that.

You also got the people that actually don't want to go over to gw2.. but imho I think gw1 will after a half year after release of gw2 be dead
fowlero
At the rate GW2 seems to be going i'd say GW1 will be dead long before the release of GW2.

so heroes can really get u through about anything huh?

Anet will keep GW1 servers running for a while after releasing GW2. I do not think GW1 will be dead. It might be quite empty but not dead. There are many passionate and dedicated people out there who will be playing it till server shutdown. Indeed you can make your way through most of the game with heroes.

Servers won't be going down for a looong time. And like you said, you can always use Hero/Hench to get you through the campaigns. Or bring some friends.
But I guess PvP will become kinda dead.

There are only a few titles that are hard to max without the help of other players. I think off drunkard, sweet tooth, party animal and wisdom. Farming gold and purchasing the title object from other players is usually the way to go ... this will become a lot harder after GW2 is out.
The rest I think can be done with heroes and maybe a helpful guild.
PvP titles is a different story but I doubt you had those in mind anyway.

man can they shut down the servers? cause as farm as im concerned, ppl paid good money for all the campaigns, as well as bonus content. how do we redeem what we pay for lol. thats like buying a ps3, and 5 yearslater sum1 comes to ur house and takes it
RazmO-
They said GW1 isnt going to be closed, and if they will close it , it will take a year+ , so.. dont worry, they wont shut it down unless there are like 5 people playing probaly.
Kikuta
I remember Gaile saying that the Guild Wars servers won't be taken down on release of Guild Wars 2, but I imagine we'll definitely be looking at reduced district numbers, maybe even a limit to 2 per PvE outpost, and something like 5 for major PvE towns (Lion's Arch, Kaineng Center and Kamadan) and PvP outposts.

If the GW1 servers do go offline then the very last update before that happens should patch your game to allow you to run it singleplayer, LAN and direct connection so you can still play just not with EVERYone only people you know. I think thats fair compromise.
Also I think that GW2 is the time for 7 heroes to be released into GW1 as there will be no more "we want to encourage people playing together" excuse.
Heck, the servers are dead already let alone in 2-3 years when GW2 comes out

Don't be afraid, the server's probably won't shut down any soon. And when the day might come, some 3rd party of GW-lovers probably takes over the server and hosts them themselves. It won't be the first time it happens.
Hyper.nl
The GW1 servers will not go anywhere after GW2 is released. ANet already confirmed that GW1 will stay. THe players might be another story. It is very likely that quite a big part of them will move over to GW2 as their primary game. But I'm sure that there are also quite some players who just like to stay.
For that time it would be recommended to get into a good guild to continue to play together, because most likely it WILL be more difficult to find a PuG.

GWII will not be released before next year (still hoping we actually get it next year)
Servers will continue to run (as Anet have already promised us)
There will be only a few people left (personal crystal-ball prediction)

Actually ... I think that ANet likes to make money. If you can sell two games rather than just one you will make more money.
Further, note that there is a weak link already between the two games in the Hall of Monuments. Stronger links can be forged if they want to keep GW1 sales up.
Newer is not always better. The new game play style of GW2 will hopefully appeal to most of us, but may not.
Requirements to run GW2 will be higher, as stated above. And when GW2 comes out, it will be version 1.0, with further bug fixes, balance patches, and expansions to follow. Then too, it will be a smaller world in the beginning.
GW1 is the foundation of GW2. No, it is not going away.

I imagine there will be those that will play gw1 for a while because "ZOMGTHATSWORDYOUGETBYFILLINGYOURHoMISSOUBERLEETIM USTHAVEIT1111ONEONEONE". Other than that, who knows.

I'm torn whether to buy GW2 on release and hope that Anet haven't destroyed the gameplay I love in the name of better graphics, or wait till the price drops.
If I buy it straight away I'll get to play before the nerf bats get swung but if I play later I wont be thinking about the good old days.
Or more likely I will stick to GW1 as I have put time and effort into it, got plenty of enjoyment back over the years and don't want to just abandon it.

chances are there will be a lot of people doing titles and stuff right before the release of gw2 so that they can get whatever "reward" comes with it, so you could probably just join them if you didn't have everything you want by gw2's release. I'm hoping that when(s'bound to happen eventually.) they shut down the gw servers they'll put out a patch that lets you play it offline/host your own server. That way 10 years from now when I wanna play through prophecies again I will be able to.
slowerpoke
its going to be strange having to attend events in both gw1 and gw2 at the same time. good chance the sequel will inherit those.
im am looking forward to gw2, and will give it priority.

When i read about guild wars 2 i thought i read some where that they are closing the HoM just before guild wars 2 comes out. So you will not be able to put stuff into guild wars 2 once it is released
Shadowspawn X
GW2 is looking like a big flop tbh, there was no reason to abandon GW1 after 2.5 years and quit adding to it. Many of the changes in GW2 sound like crap it will sale upon release out of fanbase curiosity , but I'm not sure many will bother to play it. People also built up nice accounts and are not going to be looking forward to starting over.
There will be overlap for a short time where you can go back and add to the HoM after release of GW2, but that window will be limited.

Don't worry, the hoarders from GWGuru will still be playing GW, since they can't take their Ectos and Armbraces with them to GW2.

I'll get GW2 and more than likely enjoy playing it, but I'll probably also still be playing GW as well. I have so many characters that I want to do so many things with...and I'm not gonna get it all done in a year or even two (as a lot of us don't or can't play 24/7)
So I'll be around, doing my thing. The game is far from dead to me. I have lots I can do, and learn, and master within the game still, and I've been playing since a few months from release.
It's not dead to you if it still brings you enjoyment...just like any other game.

My 2 cents.
As long as ANet/NCsoft continue to sell GW1, they will have an obligation to keep the GW1 servers open for a reasonable time (at least a year). Most likely though, some time after GW2 is launched (depending upon how successful it is) they will stop selling GW1. As time goes on, the number of people playing GW1 will naturally dwindle down to next to nothing.
Hardware wise, that only means a server or two and a small bandwidth load, so GW1 can stay active for a very long time.

The whole point of this [the Hall of Monuments] is to reward those gamers. We want to say, "Thanks for playing those one, two, or three years in our original game. We appreciate you guys getting into the game early, and we want to reward you for that."
So I can't imagine that we'll let somebody coming into Guild Wars six months after Guild Wars 2 ships and letting them have rights to all of the same opportunities our original players had. Our expectation is that a lot of people are going to be getting a lot of stuff in the original Guild Wars in the several months leading up to Guild Wars 2. |

When new people start playing GW2 and havent played GW1, they will buy the GW1 games and play them to get the rewards (Hall of Monuments) for their chars in GW2. Dont worry, GW1 will pick up when GW2 starts up. It is a brilliant marketing move on Anets part, it will revitialize GW1 and make them tons of cash.
There is no way Anet is going to let that kind of cash slip away just based on customer loyalty. If they really felt that way, they would have done something for all of those people who grinded their R10 Norn for Ursan DoA before the nerf. Also if they don't allow it, then yes, GW1 will be empty and dead, why would you continue to play GW1 if everyone is playing GW2 and they are not adding new content and players into GW1? It will be empty and no new people coming into it will assure it stays empty.
ANet, if you read this, you need to allow HoM access and crossover for new players to assure the continued success and growth of GW1 (both pre and post GW2) and fund the R&D for both games. If not there is no point in me continuing to amass anything in GW1 since my hall is pretty much full, why keep playing if GW1 is like polishing brass on the sinking titanic.
I think Anet owes us a difinitive answer on this.

Personally, IMHO, I have to believe, that if Diablo3 comes out before GW2, anet won't have anything to worry about since the the hardcode PvE players will jump to the Blizzard servers to play that instead.

I'm like super stoked for GW2 and have been ever since the announcement. the only thing that I'm not liking is the HoM, I don't get alot of time to play Gw at the moment and I dont think I'll be able to fill my HoM b4 the release of GW2 and I'm afraid other players will have like a huge advantage over me.

Funny, but I don't put down GTA when I've played it to death and gotten bored...call it dead, then whine about it on a forum. I just leave it for a while then go back to it for more fun. Much like I do with GW. I'll play it until I cease to have fun. I don't need an 'economy', a large amount of idiots in towns shouting nonsense, or new content to find the fun I still have lotsa stuff I want to do, and it's all doable without needing a mass of pointless people in towns to do it.

Yeah I'd be sad too...I really like my characters. But I guess the names are still reserved so I'll try to make the same faces...but IT JUST WON'T BE THE SAME!!! *sniff*
