The first one I made was an Elementalist. I like that profession because they are on the back line and very powerful. Another fun profession is ranger, which is also back line. Rangers are good for interrupting, trapping, etc.

its better to use the -image command, so it will download everything in advance. It will take quite a while to finish though.

ya it might take a while, my first download took about 15 mins i think. one thing you can do is edit your .exe with -image this way you dont have to download anything in the game however you do have to download stuff when you start GW. i would suggest staying away from monk or mesmer until you get used to GW, but by all means you should play what you enjoy.

Read the book and pick which description excites you the most. If you see something else you might like to play, try it out.

I made a Necro at first, hated it, made a Ranger, powered it through all of Prophecies, then deleted it, made other characters, and started another Ranger before I decided that was the class for me.

I reckon it depends if you want to be in the battle (warrior) or in the back line as said above (pretty much everything else). What kind of weapons you like can make difference like swords, staffs or bows. What made me choose elementalist were the elements being your skills. Same for you jus read through the abilties and such.

If you like to get right in the action and/or like playing with swords and axes, etc., then start out with a Warrior. You can start out with basic hack&slash.

If you like playing with bows & arrows, start with a Ranger. Pets are fun too.

If spellcasting sounds more your speed, start with an Elementalist (or maybe a Necromancer if you're into dead stuff. )

Monks are not as effective as damage dealers (Smiting) and being a healer/protector takes too much concentration on other players, skill bars, energy bars, health bars, etc., to be as much fun to start out with.
Mesmers are also generally harder to play effectively when you first start out.

In all cases, I suggest you start out just concentrating on the primary class to get used to the whole game mechanic/spell using thing, without getting into a secondary. Therefore, take Monk as a secondary, but just so you can carry a "hard", reusable rez like [Resurrection] or [Rebirth] and maybe a little self heal - not to be a healer in any other sense.

One more thing, i bought the game of the year edition but it didnt give me the exclusive items, only in pvp when i made a mesmer..

I made a monk first. I think they are the most fun because I always liked the feeling when the team is relying on you.
For the bonus items, go to the outpost and type in /bonus

You should start off playing all the characters EXCEPT for monk and mesmer. Monk and Mesmer are a little bit confusing for new players who just start playing in my opinion you should either start off with warrior or ranger. I personally, I started off with ranger and I got it to lvl.20 and now hes my main and I love him! Anyways you asked what kind of weapons each proffesion used well you can go to www.GuildWarsWiki.com or www.Guildwars.com I personally remond GWWiki but its your choice.

Do you happen to also have the NF expansion? If, so R/P would be your best bet.

I only have Prophecies too, and I started as a Ranger. I toughed it out until I reached Droknar's Forge following Ascension, and by then I could make some money with traps. Luckily, a basic trap build can be found in Prophecies.
As for secondary, I went with Monk, but really the only reason I use Monk is for Rebirth. I don't use a pet, so I rely only on bow attacks, and the only thing I can think of to assist in attacking would be Elementalist for Conjure spells, which you can't make much use of until later on when you obtain elemental bowstrings.

I don't have a trial key yet but i'm doing some research so I can jump right in when i do. I'm thinking i'll try warrior or ranger as they sound fairly straightforward and I played WOW for a while and the two games seem to compare somewhat. In WOW i played a hunter to level 50 so i was wondering if a ranger is going to be similar to a hunter with the pet thing. And what is the best class to solo with? What is a class that is easily playable and doesn't require fast reactions? My computer is usually somewhat slow or laggy with these games so i would like a class that doesn't require perfect timing like a WOW rouge or warrior requires.
thanks a bunch =]

You really don't have to worry about your secondary profession now and you can change it later once you reach a certain point in the game. Elementalists dont really rely on their secondary too much and if they do its only to bring a skill or two. Since you said you chose mesmer for a secondary you should be fine too. You'll find this skill at some point "arcane echo" which is great to use with powerful skills with long recharges such as "meteor shower". Fire elementalists are usually better when it comes to pve.

Oh, and wiki is your friend. http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page

Ok, well rangers can do several things. Of course they shoot arrows with a bow and they can have one pet. Rangers have several types of skills: bow attacks, pet attacks, stances (to run and block attacks), preparations (to buff your arrows), nature rituals (summons spirits that affects everyone within range - ex: there is one that changes all elemental dmg to cold dmg), and there is also traps that trigger when someone runs over it. Rangers may need fast reaction times in pve for interrupts though, but for the most part they are easy to play. Also, classes in this game are not meant to solo. After you leave the very beginning area, you will always be with a party, whether it is with people are henchmen/hero AI. There are sometimes where a class would solo for the sole purpose of farming.
