the Halloween Art Contest!
Tzu
anyone thinking about entering?
You don't have to reveal your plans, but have you started working yet? If
you're not entering, is there an entry you would like to see done by someone else?
This could serve as a thread for inspiration, and to receive feedback on work in progress. Also, it would be great if people could post their finished work here when the deadline has expired, so that everyone can enjoy every artists' work, even if they're not one of the winners or honourable mentions.
Previous contests (winners):
Halloween Art Contest 2007
Halloween Art Contest 2006
Halloween Art Contest 2005
Generally, the idea is for you to "craft Halloween art with a Guild Wars theme."
Last year, these were ideas of what you could enter, displayed in the rules:
__* Carve a pumpkin—real or not—and take a photograph.
__ * Create a blueprint for other pumpkin carvers.
__ * Sketch a costume by hand or on the computer. If you're extra creative, stitch up that costume, add some makeup or temporary tattoos, and model it in a photograph.
__ * Design a desktop image to share the joy in your home, school, or office.
__ * Decorate a cake, bake some cookies, compose a menu, build an edible haunted house—put your culinary skills to the task.
__ * Spruce up your homestead and send a photograph.
Remember:
! One entry per person
! "Entries will be judged equally on the basis of creativity, style, and the melding of Halloween into a Guild Wars theme."
! Last year there were 90 prizes available, but they upped the prize pool as they announced the winners because of all the great entries. You shouldn't expect this to happen again, but you must expect the entries to be even better than last year, and the competition to be more difficult. In other words, DO YOUR VERY BEST!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I for one have started working on my entry. It will be a costume, so it's going to take a lot of time to construct. I'd be willing to post work in progress here and give constructive criticism to other artists, as well as help anyone else who's making a costume.
I'll be bringing the Sylvari concept art to life as best as I can.
nope, I dont seem to have a kid that I can dress up for this 'art' contest....so after last year I have decided to just give up.
StarrTheInsane
Are they having one this year? Usually the deadline is mid-October, so if they are having one, there's not much time.
Operative 14
I'll probably enter another wallpaper this year. I'll never win, but it's fun to try.
Tender Wolf
I'm entering! I have a GREAT idea if I do say so myself. It just came to me and I've almost got it done. Even if it doesn't win I'll keep it for fun because I really enjoyed working on it and am proud of it. Can't wait to show it to everyone!
Tzu I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with as well. That ritualist costume was great, looking forward to seeing your next one.
The contest is definitly happening! Someone from Arenanet just confirmed it over at inc-gamers. They're working with it as we speak.
I would be uber upset if they didn't have one...especially since the last 3 said 'annual' and since i'm already working on something xD
Good to see that the contest really is happening (http://www.guildwars.com/events/contests/halloween2008/) If I have the time, maybe I'll enter something involving food or a Photoshop manip. Or if I can, I'll try to do a generic pumpkin carving
KiyaKoreena
My entry is 95% done, but seeing the prizes kind of killed my drive to finish right now. And no, its not costumes this year. Had enough of people complaining about my entry last year.
KiyaKoreena
Harsh is the people who a year later are still griping about my costumes winning an art contest even though it followed the suggestions of things to do. I know, "its the internet, get a thicker skin" but honestly....
I finished the last bits and took the pictures yesterday. This week will be going over and photoshopping any mistakes/lighting issues and making the little webpage again like last year for the people interested in how it was done. I am quite proud of my work that I did this year and think a few people will enjoy seeing it.
Still cant help but be disappointed there are no minis and unless I can get 1st or 2nd I wont be winning anything new. But thats pretty much the same for anyone that placed high last year.
I'm just glad the deadline is closer to halloween this time. Last year I had something I was really happy with and then found out that I'd missed the deadline by a few days. Maybe I'll revamp my old one since it never got used...
Drizzitdude
I want to enter but i cant think of anything compared to the awesomeness of the last year entries. And a pumpkin just seems kind of boring. I want to win for the graphics card and the signed Nf though.
emberlights
Yes, I'm entering. Not really disappointed with the prizes, I rather have a new video card than a minipet. Actually, cause I really DO need a new video card =D. I doubt I'll win 1st place though. I'm just doing a drawing. Good luck everyone.
KiyaKoreena
Just sent in my entry, I can't wait to see what everyone else came up with.
how does everyone think they did?
KiyaKoreena
I think I got in the top 20 with mine. *crosses fingers* My husband doesnt think he got near the finals, but at least we have a pretty desktop wallpaper now.
guevera verreuil
I liked my entry this year more than the last one which got top 100 :S
Hopefully, I did better ^..^
*crosses all fingers and toes*
Should we post our entries here or no?
Doh! I was so proud of my work and thought I'd at least get an honorable mention. I mean, it's 100% original and has never been done before. Not to sound like a jerk but some of the winners, well, they just weren't that good in my opinion. But meh, I enjoyed making my entry and I'm not just gonna get rid of it. Observe...
I was digging through my basement and happened to come upon an old Barbie doll (Butterfly Art Barbie, who was discontinued years ago due to having a large tattoo on her stomach) and another one given to me by a friend's younger sister with the new and unusual feet. A head swap, some sewing, and gluing later, I came up with this:
Barbie as Tender Wolf!
I know that hasn't been done before. lol More detailed shots could come later. Be sure to see Urgoz's Longbow and Howl in there as well. And the elite druid armor and the flowers in her hair, not to mention the witch hat that could be acquired before. muhahahahaha I couldn't cut her hair though because with that particular style it would have poofed out, so I had to leave it as it was. I think it still comes close, I didn't even have to repaint the face because it resembled my character's so much.
Love your costume Guevera, congrats on the honourable mention
And that comic is just great
Very accurate looking Tender Wolf. :-)
They should have extended the honorable mention list like last year.
Great stuff i've seen this year though I'm kinda dissapointed that the Gwen costume won...yes, its very magnificently done but its not exactly Halloweeney...not to mention it was done not intended for the contest. And that Photoshop picture stealing one... -shrudders- I ended up not submitting anything because I've been busy but i'm pleased with the other results.
Just a tip for you costume makers though, even if your costume is great, make sure you can see all of the main parts of it! Make it look as appealing as possible in you photograph so your audience won't have to wonder what a certain section of it looks like Just something I've noticed that bugs me a little, but then again it might be the several years of photography I've had
I'm glad I'm getting some more skill pins. I'm crazy about those things StarrTheInsane
Gratz to the winners!
Mine didn't stand a chance. It was a coloring book style Mad King Thorn with a word search around it that could be printed out and given to kids. Since it didn't make it as a finalist and no one has seen it yet, I'm thinking of saving it and having a coloring contest with the restriction that submissions must locate a certain number of words in the word search first. Kiya, I would have liked to see your diorama in the top 20 as you say. Alot of work went into setting the scene and I had fun exploring all the details. Tender Wolf, I like your submission, but I have a strong hunch they had to turn it down as Barbie is a trademark of another company. Chicken of the Seas Mamath
Yay, they're up!
That Gwen costume is pretty fantastic... Really looks like Gwen. Even the flute! Took me a couple seconds to "get" the Trick or Treating Grenth one but I love it. xD Oh Grenth, such a joker. :B Have to confess I don't get the Razah one though. I don't have the hero yet so maybe that's why. Anyone explain? I really like the poster style entry too. It is rockin' Little disappointed (of course) that I didn't place at all since there's no other way really to get the skill pins here in Australia but at least there's one Australian on the finalists list. I always want to see the finalists entries too though... *clicks uselessly at the white text* KiyaKoreena
Heh. I wonder if next year I should add some of the progress and detail shots to the main pic and resubmit. Maybe they didn't really take a good look at it. And I can tweak a few of the things that didnt turn out how I wanted. Now everyone knows what Im submitting next year! hehehe
Tzu
The winner definitely deserved something for her efforts. Though her costume has been around for a while, she never got any publicity for it.
I didn't have time to make a Sylvari costume in the end, or, well, I didn't have time to finish it. It's still 70% in progress. I was too busy making [see attatchment]. I won Best Costume at the London Expo the weekend before Halloween with it! YAY! Makes me look like a drag-queen, but whatever, at least I won something X3 Oh, and TenderWolf: I quite like your idea. Did you make the bow yourself? 'sure is detailed O.O Tender Wolf |
