Internet Drops Randomly
falling2grey
Hello smarter person(people) than myself.
My internet drops randomly every few minutes (sometimes almost an hour). When it drops, its only down for 10-30 seconds or so. Im pretty certain that the problem is my router because I connected my laptop directly to my cable modem without any problems. I tried going into the status logs for both the cable modem and the router. Unfortunately the router doesn't display much detail about what happens during the drop. What is the problem?
Router: Dynex DX-E401
Cable Modem: Arris TM 402P/110
ISP is Comcast
XP SP3
Thanks in advance!

Ya, i copy pasted from my post on different random forum. Click the link for a couple of pics with a bit more detail. Also I'll give 5 zkeys to anyone who can provide me a solution that doesnt involve buying new things.

Could be the torrents your running. Some router can't handle all the connections that are created when sharing or downloading torrents. http://www.formortals.com/Home/tabid...7/Default.aspx The easiest way to fix this is resetting your modem (unplug it for 30 seconds). Another way, running a script when your router starts. http://www.utorrent.com/faq.php#Spec..._GL_GS_routers But this can only be done if your router supports it. try checking DD-WRT http://www.dd-wrt.com/ or Tomato http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato to see if your router is supported. If so you might want to use their firmware, its better than the Dynex ones. Using that firmware, and maybe yours you can prioritize GW's ports and lower torrent ports.
If you are on wireless try changing the channel. If you are near a wireless phone/ microwave move away from them. Both firmware I mentioned will let you boost your signal but don't go over 70 since it can overheat your router.

Its not a wireless network. And the utorrent hardly gets used, (I use grabit/usenet).

If it was a regular drop every so many minutes, I'd suggest that maybe your laptop is looking for a wireless connection - which shouldn't affect a wired connection though.
But, anyway, it's random, and I assume you mean it only happens when the router is in the loop.
So, if it's not Comcast itself, it would probably be a bad (or overheating) router or a bad router power brick.

i think it's both comcast and torrents.
comcast doesn't want net neutrality because they're bad. torrents let people do what they want because they're good. when comcast's spies tell them that you are looking at torrents on your computer, comcast turns off your internet for a few seconds to mess with your connection and make you look for seeds all over again. unfortunately, guild wars doesn't work without internet so they turned off guild wars too. this happens to me quite often and seems to go away when i stop browsing torrents on my computer, which is how i know what is happening.

Comcast is Satan. That is really the only issue here. Their new policies are outrageous. They are monitoring your bandwidth usage closely, and if you do more then check blogs and your email, you are abusing your bandwidth (that you clearly don't pay outrageous fees for every month.../sarcasm), so they cut the connection for a brief second, or they throttle it back to below dial up speeds. Again, Comcast is Satan.

I have Comcast at home and very rarely have we ever experienced any drop of our internet. We have atleast 3 computers running on the internet at a time, 2 of them are usually playing GW or some other game online. I also can play my XBox Live (AT HOME) on my wireless network with great connection, relatively no lag, and no drop out of service. So it still could be Comcast but it might have to do with your region or regional Comcast service.

Don't worry pwnd, Comcast will get around to you soon enough. Keep abusing the bandwidth that you "don't" pay for, and they will have their way with you. Comcast is pure and simple evil, aka Satan.

lol Considering I live out in the coutnry and pretty much no one else in my area uses a computer. (I live by a bunch of older people who don't know of this "internet") So pretty much the only people using bandwidth out there is, my family and I.

Also to those people talking about Comcast, I also hate comcast in all regards. And they havent set the cap "Yet". It takes place Oct. 1st and is 250gb per month (i think). But I don't use more than 150gb a month anyways, and thats not through torrents. Usenet ftw

Comcast also monitors bandwidth using a new policy.

They are just itching to ruin your service because they are too lazy to add to their backbone.

I wonder if that's what they're doing to me...lol. My internet poops out every so often as well. And it doesn't seem to be because of router/computer problems. And yeah, mine is Comcast too... -_-

I wonder if it could be because im using skype. The first couple of days when I had my laptop directly wired to my cable modem, I had no big lag/disconnect issues. Yesterday and today I've been getting similar problems I had while I was connected via router and modem. I notice that my skype calls drop and I get huge lag in guild wars/internet browsing. Maybe Comcast doesnt like Skype ~_~
