Personal Target Box
Snow Bunny
I haven't played for a bit now, but I was watching some old matches the other day. I got to focusing on the mesmer, and recalled an idea (wish) I had back when I played, and when I mesmered.
It'd be like a personal target box of sorts.
When I would mesmer with a Dom setup (I suppose this could apply to other shutdown classes as well) I remember to keep track of monks in the traditional backline, I kept one highlighted as my target, but kept a ctrl+T on the other monk. It was really clumsy, but it was much better than some awkward cycling with keys, or worse, clicking on them.
You could have a box with up to 4 or so targets, so that it'd remember who you personally Ctrl+T'd. That way you could efficiently keep tabs on your hapless target.
i don't know, thoughts?

In my most recent GvG's, having Signet of Humility shut down an entire game where I wasn't on a split was extremely fun to do. This would make it even easier to do.

I've thought of something similar as well Snow but the main problem I see is that it would make everything to easy.
It promotes looking at bars and less battlefield awareness. All of a sudden Top 15 mesmers are looking at queued up bars for Aegis and not the animation. They stop learning recharge times and good macro management.
The last thing I'd want is to dumb down competitive PvP even more.

They have this in everquest (1). Its called Mark npc, but can be used on anyone iirc. Anyway you can set a 'mark' on whatever target you like and a coresponding hotkey to target each one individually. Pretty convenient, would fit gw nicely. Gw already has the target calling and the ability to assist to that target, sadly it's very late in the game for them to be adding new interface functionality imo, I wouldn't really expect it, though I would love to see it. Just isn't likely.

im going to say wut i said in the other topic which is almost exactly like this is; that if they were do do something along these lines it would need to not show heath bars or what is on them at that moment ie enchants and hexs.

if i had my way i'd be able to see the other teams party window and whenever they were casting something of importance the box would flash red and the game would auto target them and auto interrupt them with computer-like reflexes

I like the idea of being able to preset one or two targets to easily reselect them, however I dont think there should be a menu for it... sorta like T selects called target, but you dont see that persons bar until you actually taget them

But I have many memories of frontlining as well where I wished I had that box for a quick swap back to Target B so I could d-dagger that guardian, but I was busy q-stepping someone to do it.
I understand the implications of it in dumbing down play, but it's truly clumsy to cycle through targets. I think just 2 targets could work; you could get T1 and T2 next to targets you personally call, and you'd be able to swap through them.
I just think that Anet's enemy-party cycle system is terribly ineffective; I know to count recharges, and I know animations by heart now, but it's more of a "tab tab tab tab, RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO! missed it" I'll think about this more, but I believe there's a balanced, non-damaging way of implementing this that would simply make it less clumsy.
And clicking on people is retarded.

Sorry Bunny but like it was said, no need to dumb down PvP and make it easier. Plus look at the effect this would have on TA or RA or HB where there are only 4 opponents.

They idea may not fit for a PvP playing character.
If you are having trouble targeting enemies, remember that you can click on their activation icons (like the circle that appears when they use a signet) or directly in their names.
The problem with icons is that no all skill have them, and enemies are not always activating something.
The problem with names is that they MOVE AROUND A FRIGGIN' WHOLE LOT when you hold Alt or Ctrl keys. So names should be frozen when Alt or Ctrl are hold.
But for PvE, for Observers or to keep track of spawned creatures it would be really great. I though of something similar myself some time ago.

No worries Bunneh, no one thinks of TA, not even the Devs.
It's just a poor bastard child that gets abused.

On top of that, when people shadow step, target must be broken.

No. I say that when you shadow step, those that are targeting you should lose their lock on you.
That's so obvious that... meh, forget it.

I like the logic behind the shadow step thing, but I don't think it's really a good idea for Guild Wars.

Similar to how you can hotkey allies 1-8 you should be able to hotkey enemies 1-8. Would make targeting a ton easier with out really dumbing down the game, only problem would be 3 way HA fights and AB.

not a really good idea on the shadow step but i can see why that would make sense, shadow stepping is meant to be so that you disappear from this world and appear near the target again, for that split second foes will be confused.
MithranArkanere
Because when someone disappears and reappears elsewhere, you can't just instantly know were they are.
Yo have to look for them again, and that may take a split second or a while, depending on your visual skills.
Without the target lost, people just have to hit space or skills again to keep their usual mindless button mashing routines.

While losing a target on him shadowstepping might have been a good way to design it from the beginning (only if shadowstep was over quite a large distance), but making such a change at this point would be just stupidly annoying and nothing else.
And as for targetting itself, I bound my [Tab] to Closest Target, [F] to Next Target, [R] to Previous Target for quick easy access back in 2004 and it's working fine for me. A small tip: a quick Next, then Previous Target returns you back to your last target you had selected by Next/Prev changing, so you can quickly go back to doing your stuff after spiking a called [T]arget.
I don't feel a need for an extra targetting window, it could make things much easier,
But what I think really could use improvements is the targetting by clicking on a player.
It's often a big mess in a tight fight making it hard to quickly and precisely select the target you want this way. Changes I'd like to see would be:
*Make it impossible to select a friendly target while holding Ctrl and impossible to select an enemy target while holding Alt. (as an option)
*Give all players a larger clickable selection area, independant of model and size.
*Maybe another key to freeze the onscreen player names for another way of selection.
