Yes, it is quite annoying. No one goes for what looks good, just what is most expensive.
For some classes, the best looking armour is actually non-elite, in my opinion, or pieces from multiple sets.

For some reason, people in GW LOVE glowie stuff. ALL of the super rare weapons have some sort of glowy/light animiation. All the tonics that "people" want in the game are glowy super monsters of DOOM (ie, look at all the bitching about this month's giant head).
I wish GW's population wasn't obsessed with crappy looking lighting effects. Then maybe a.net would spend more time designing unique looking items and armor, rather then thinking "how can I take this, and add spikes/animation/fireballs (sin armor).

If people like their black FoW, with ninja mask, chaos gloves or destroyer gloves and specs, it's their choice... You might hate it, I'll probably dislike the look, but if they are happy with it, let them be ^^ I only have to look at them for a short period of time (same dist or explorable) whereas they have to look at their characters all the time...

And maybe people really like the glowiness of items. Gives you something to look at besides your female chars' breasts. Yeah you know who you are.
And as for the rave...I'm gonna have to agree w/Rahja on this one. Guild Wars needs to implement some ecstasy in this game if you really wanna rave lol.

Here's an idea, make a new set of gloves that are twice the price of chaos gauntlets, that way, everyone will want to have them as the new status symbol. But here's the kicker, give them the same skin as your prof's starter set.
Both sides win, because we don't have to be blinded by obnoxious crap everytime we zone into a major city, and because they got to drop obscene amounts of ectos on something completely unworth their time and effort.

To be honest, if I could afford Chaos Gloves, I'd buy them.
But there are more beneficial things to get with money first, such as titles and stuff that can do something in my HoM.
As far as them being overrated, that seems like a matter of perception. I'd say some people buy the gloves because they look cool, but there are some who buy the gloves either because they think people who where them are cool or that other people say that the gloves are cool.

Well i'm not exactly one to bash people for buying expensive useless stuff, that's purely cosmetic, but i can tell you i have never wasted my cash on chaos gloves, or obsidian armour. I've bought a good friend of mine peices to his obsidian armour, only because he was obsessed with it, but i would never wear it myself. I like to sport my vibrant pink asuran monk armour, and back in the day, my 15k (blue+green) luxon monk armour
