Antivirus: Avast or Avira AntiVir
Firewall: Comodo Firewall Pro
They can't stop you from running certain antivirus software on your computer.

Take a look at the article below, it lists a whole bunch of good security advice for you... Basically what the guys above say, Komodo for XP, Vista firewall for Vista.
AVG, Avasat or Avira AntiVir for antivirus.
Anti-spyware:
* Freeware: Lavasoft Ad-Aware Free and Windows Defender
* Shareware:Webroot Spy Sweeper
Watchdog software try WinPatrol. Watchdog software basically tells you when something is trying to install itself and ensures it's you who wants to do it.

Ad-Aware and Windows Defender are no good.
SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware work well.

+1 with everything that Tarun wrote.
Well except for Avast...I really didn't like it anymore...it used to be good though.
I always install antivir, comodo firewall and malwarebytes antimalware on my friends computers.
And I use these programs too ^^

Eset Nod32 is by far the one of the best antivirus + firewall. The program has never missed a virus scene it was release.

well we cant use comodo because apparently in the user agreement it says u cant use it in istitutions and certain settings at home is fine but were looking for something that we can install on all the computers here without worring about infringment or w/e this is not my call this is my instructors just wanted to throw that out there lol and thanks for all the great suggestions everyone

I have tried several and I have been extremely happy with Avast. I even like it better than the pay to use ones such as McAfee etc...
If you download it separately for each pc than I don't see why that would be infringing any user agreements.... or have I misunderstood and you are looking for something to protect the entire server???

i asked my instructor and basically the reason we cant use avast avg or comodo is because they are free for home use not for commercial applications..so after knowing that can anyone recomend something that is legal??i really do appreciate all the help u guys have given me and so does the whole IT deparment lol

wait a second - you are college students using these on personal computers, right? You are not businessmen relying on these programs to protect your data so that you can make money off of it. I guess I am not seeing what the problem is with using freeware at your school. I think that all of the reputable ones that offer a freeware version specify that it is for home or personal use only. So if that is really the school policy it looks like you are going to have to go with a pay to use protection provider.

2. Eset's NOD32 and Kaspersky software are some of the best.

well yes its a college and we dont have personal computers we use workstations and we all have admin accounts because its an IT Specialist class and we were using freeware for basic protection and i guess that wasnt legal and if you do think that we have to buy a license for it then ill let my instructor help again thank you for all your posts about this its really helped us out

I'd let them worry about protecting lab computers, because it's their responsibility.
For you own, use whatever you want, really.

I think everything free is going to be "free for home/personal use."

ur teachers/staff r fail...
either they think ur not allowed to use freeware on ur own pc jus because ur using pc inside their facilities
or they're hiring u to do tech work on their pcs

The colleges workstations - their problem. Suggest they pay for some protection rather than getting their students to get them something on the cheap (unless you get credit for doing so )
