The Official Guild Wars Wiki is offline for emergency maintenance. We had expected this maintenance to last only about 5 minutes, however there are some technical issues, and it is taking longer than expected to bring the site back up. The team is working to try and get this resolved as quickly as possible.

I'll update this thread with more information as it becomes available.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Wait, people actually USE official wiki? I thought it was just the only place to talk to devs.

They are in the process of implementing a security and bug fix from MediaWiki.

The team decided to implement this hotfix as soon as possible so that users would be protected from this vulnerability. This was the reason for the expediency, and why it was deemed urgent.

Thank you for answering. I am now glad I had not been using it the last few days/week. I hope the people who were using it are informed about potential problems they may see as a result of this issue. It sounds quite possible that peopple had info acquired they would not want acquired.

Currently, the only advantage the Original Wiki has over the Official Wiki is the "how to beat this" info. The Official Wiki lacks quite a bit of that; probably because it wasn't seen as a priority at first and now no one on the wiki team cares.

Yes, thank you, Regina, for the info. I was concerned when I couldn't access the site.

All wikis based on MediaWiki will have to apply the patch to stay up-to-date on security fixes, so it's not just the Official Guild Wars Wiki that this patch would apply to.

There are a few minor technical details of game mechanics, salvage information, or item location, etc missing, but these are truly minor.

Thank you for the notice, Regina. Please convey my thanks to the website team for addressing the security fix.

You must as well stop using the internet then because pretty much everything is not secure, and I'm sure MediaWiki still has 10,000+ other bugs or vulnerabilities just waiting to be exploited, just like these forums, hotmail, yahoo, and everything else on the Internet do!

You're always open to having info you don't want acquired acquired. Being smart and an intelligent user of your PC and internet prevents this.

Thanks for the update Regina.

QFT. Security flaws are everywhere. Knowing how they come to you is the best defense against them. Expecting others to do the security work for you just doesn't work.

That being said, I really only use the official wiki for update information and skill feedback. Hopefully we see a new update on skill balance either today or next thursday.

I don't suppose this has anything to do with the massive lag that just nailed the servers?

Hey Regina, while you're in the mood for answering questions, how about you wander over to that "titles" thread that is getting lots of attention.

The wiki is back up.

We're sorry for the delay and the inconvenience.

The wiki isn't located on the game servers. There are no reported problems on our side with the game servers, nor are there network problems on our end.

The next scheduled game update is next week.

What happened to the first Thursday of each month?

It typically falls on the first Thursday, but sometimes it is scheduled on a different day, depending on what projects the team is working on. For example, last month the game update took place in the second week of the month. This was because the live team decided to have the MOX and Fire Imp update as a separate build from the skill balance update.

I'm kind off curious, any projects we should know about for this week/month?

its far surpassed it imo...and for a long while too
in terms of presentation, layout, formatting, and general ease of use

yesh, teh original wiki sometimes has more content
but generally this extra content is extra advice//findings/speculations/opinions/etc
and i find not terribly necessary for most ppl to read

i use it more like an encylopedia
and i can find and read things much faster/easier on official wiki

and being able to interact wit devs is always a plus

However you use an information site for it's information, not for the presentation. And while it's true official wiki has better presentation, the information that is essential to the game (and thus what you would consider necessary for most people to read) is presented in a very decent way with some extras in the unofficial, such as Quick skills references, instead of putting it all on the original page; result being it's more begginer friendly.

The extra information and tips on how to beat this or that is always a plus, while the talk pages have valuable information. I almsot never see this in the official one.

So imo unofficial is still better, despite the drama and the abandon. I only enter official to read Developer's updates and when someone links to it.

Yeah, I suffered major lag the last two days, but today seems to be clear of it

Agreed. I hate the original wiki, the official is by far much better. Especially in what I need to find with the wiki, which almost always deals with lore.

The Official Wiki>the Original Wiki in format, info, and just plain everything.

Glad GW2 has an official wiki from the get-go, although I don't like the "how to's" of the wikis, the fast access to info is always good.

I disagree. Original Wiki is still better. The ONLY thing the official wiki did better was getting GW:EN info up when it first came up.

But, whatever, apples to oranges, everybody has preferances.

I think the main advantage of the official wiki is the link to the ingame 'Help' function (F10). Even though personally I've never used it..

It's a good thing I caught this thread or I probably wouldn't have gotten the wiki update for my personal wiki. Thank you for the info.

When hundreds of people hit the wiki all at the same time, sending multiple thousands of requests per second to our servers, it does tend to slow down a bit. The wiki was back up when I posted yesterday.

Note that this security problem has to do with Wiki account information, not GW account. If you don't have an account on Wiki, which you wouldn't if you are just visiting, you have no worries.
