When or Why Would You ever Need to Drop Weapon?
ruffenredie
Sort of following on from the 'naive' thread that was closed too quick for me to ask this question there:
I was also asked to do this in game recently; obviosuly I didn't because I couldn't think of why it would be needed other than to steal my item.
So why would anyone do it? Is there some part of the game I've missed where it is a good idea? Or required for a team build, or specific farming method, or something else more unlikely?
I can't for the life of me think of a reason.
Confused.

There're no reasons for doing so, well not a good one anyway.

I do it if I want to give it to a friend in an explorable area.. quicker than opening the trade window.
Apart from that, no good reason.

- to give it to a friend
- to discard of it to make room in your inventory
- to show off how pro your gear is and what a daredevil you are (daredevil is replaceable with the word "idiot" or "stupidhead" or "naive buffoon")

Working up enough DP to be unable to activate Aggressive Refrain so being forced to ask one of the people in your party to lend you a staff to get it up and running.
(That's the PG-13 version of a real game event that included a trigger happy warrior working up too much DP thus being unable to cast Mending on himself. )

Because some people are sadly naeive retards who like to show off, but when said item is snatched they throw a emo hissy fit about how unfair it is, If people still fall for idiot scammers asking them to drop the high value weapon they have taken ages to get then imo they deserve to lose it,you cant even use the excuse that they may be new to the game as the only weapons worth scamming would be high value, therefore belonging to long term players .

Even then, you could just use one of the crap ones you picked up from a monster.
@OP: If someone asks you to drop something (usually valuable) they'll be trying to scam you. Don't do it unless you really really know what you're doing.

When inventory is full, to rearrange and salvage items. No other uses. For everything else, the trash can and the trade interface will do.

You don't manage that by playing bad.
The only way to achieve that is by being INSANELY unlucky.
And if a person is THAT unlucky - do you think they had the luck of having a staff drop?
Exactly!

At the end of an Underworld speed clear, I sometimes have to drop stuff to make room for salvaging so I can claim the ectos, lockpicks and scrolls from the chest.
It's usually a blue Inscribed Staff or something but, lo and behold, someone will be greedy enough to snatch it.

Stands to reason. 100 gold + 100 gold, ... equals Armbrace.

I drop my weapon when the popos on the block say "drop that weapon", then I pull out my backup .45 and start blasting, thug life y'all.

I rly did drop a Jade sword by accident one time, i had my bags open & for some reason my mouse crossed over the bags & slung it on the ground.I was pretty quick to pick it up again.

For the record:
I've made a few thousand gold in FoW by simply playing trashman for the group - everyone gets so many drops and not everybody comes with an empty inventory ... Of course, that's whites, and if anyone so much as says give it back, he gets it back

Thanks all, so even though the person who did drop their 'vs' (I'm presuming that's a voltaic spear - I'm so not 'high end') was incredibly stupid for doing so, I still think that's mean gameplay to take it and keep it. Imagine getting an item that, so I hear, is one of the most expensive and difficult ingame items and just dropping it on command, bizarre.
In the real world its still theft, in the game, well its just mean, a persons stupidity does not mean taking their things is no longer theft.

Stupid to drop it on the ground... I guess a hard lesson learnt not to do what some retards ask of you...
Even MORE stupid to pick it up!
Once I was in a party where some moron asked another player to drop his shield for him to see (some greenie valuble thingy back in the days), and he DID!
Luckily I had a Ally Shadow Step skill equiped (think it was Death's Retreat) and fast as a rat jumped up to him and picked it up.
The moron started flaming right away calling med names and such... I opened up trade with the idiot who dropped the shield and told him what a frakking scamable a$$ he was... I then left the party, dont wanna play with idiots and morons!
I think scammer like that should have their frakking eyes ripped out of their sockets...

This seems to be a fairly common scam attempt in Kamadan. At least twice a week when I'm there some jerk is pulling the "Take a picture for guild website" trick. I just tell him to take his "drop for a screenshot" scam and go away in all chat.
It garners lols from the crowd and sometimes a few queries.

As for the people that drop things to show off and get them taken...sadly I find that kind of funny.
Do I think it's right that things get taken? No. Anyone who tries scams like that should be banned permanently from the game as far as I'm concerned.
But people shouldn't be dropping their valuable things on the ground either.

Only reason to drop i salving/ect. if some one asks you to drop its a scam,no matter how far away they run.
imnotyourmother
mostly you are correct it is a scam to steal your "things". If someone really wanted to see it then they would ask you to put it in your inventory and then put it in the trade window and click submit button. This takes a lot of time up to 5 minutes for a new player. Yes it does. A friend of mine just got the game and started in pre and went to post at lvl 3. Took ages to show him how to tell me what weapon he had. Ie - the req.
I also asked him to ping his skills and he did not know where his skills were so something complicated like trading is very hard to tell what to do just in the chat window.
In this case it would have been easier just to add him to my group and run out to the explorable area and tell him to drag the weapon and drop it on the ground so that I could tell him his weapon is junk. Then I would drop mine on the ground and say.. take this and then double click on it in your inven window to equip it. I would then stand there until I could see the weapon in his hand.
So this situation listed above is the TRUTH of the dropping weapons and stuff on the ground.
However there are scum that prey on people that are new to the game and destroy the fun in playing this great game for everyone. ANET should perma ban people proven of scamming people in this and any other ways. This type of scam leaves a foot print in the way of the log ; "name" drops Cry sword (in gold letters) "scammer" picks up Cry Sword (in gold letters) "name" Cry's
This type of ban should be very easy to prove and would stop the rip off of new players.
I almost got scammed on this when I started playing but a guildie asked me what I was up to just before I dropped my things on the ground. He said don't they will take them. I said no way cause they are all the way over there. The guildie told me to run back to the outpost and ask them to ping their build. They never did. they left the party and I kept my stuff.

To take a screenshot of a list of the names of all items you're trying to sell. :] Although I prefer to screenshot the list in the merchant window.

OMG what are all these STUPID answers??? Screenshots for selling, showing friends how to equip a sword, cleaning up inventory, making room for salvage...
The OP is wondering, is there an actual INGAME reason that has with the game mechanics to do that u need to drop weapons on the ground... are u slow or something?
To the OP, the answer is No, there is no reason (due to game mechanics) to drop weapons on the ground.
Seriously, noone cares if u drop stuff on the ground to rearange salvage or give it to I so dont care who... If u dont understand the question, pls refrain from answering it!
The only, and ONLY reason someone should ask a party member to drop a weapon on the ground is to STEAL it, end of story. They dont want to see it, they dont want to screenie it, the dont want to... I dunno...
They want to steal it, simple as that.

Speaking as one of the people who got scammed, more than once (once on a VS drop by a person in our guild and once by the old ecto / essence scam) I do feel dumb. But hey it is only a game and if people feel that they have to steal to get something they will find a person like me out there. I enjoy playing the game and meeting new people and in general everyone is nice and will help people out. I have played with PUGS that have picked up items for me when no one would rez me because they were going to let the timer run out and the item go up for grabs. I have also had people let the timer go and take the item.
As with everything in life people will show there true colors. I do feel bad when people who have worked for something or get a lucky drop lose there item because of other peoples greed or lack of morals. And yes I know it is a game but just because you can not see the person is no reason to treat them any different than if you could see them face to face.
BTW
The person is no longer in the guild and if you take screen shots and send them in to Anet they will get a temp ban. Better than nothing.

There is no good reason for dropping an item, its usually someone asking for a closer look at it.
So you drop it and they pick it up and equip it, ask yourself would you do that in the real world.
Hey says a stranger give me the keys to your car so I can get a good look at it.
Yeah right.
If your an easy going friendly kind of person its easy to chat to someone on friendly terms for a short while then treat them like a long lost brother.
The internet is like that its why its a paradise for conmen stalkers and many other undesirables.
Rule one don't drop anything and get the heck away from anyone who asks you too.
There are descriptions and images of every game item so why would they need to see yours ?

You will have to drop bundle items, but NEVER weapons.
You can even finish the whole game with a caster with the starting weapon without much trouble.
