[Rain] Alliance & BladeRadio HALLOWEEN VIDEO Competition

Very nice idea! Good video as well! I'll definately get started! One question - the YouTube video states that it must be a music video, but I didn't see that here. So I want to make sure I do it right.

Having never done one of these comps, I have a question as to what consitutes a Halloween theme. Can it be a spooky/horror type vid that doesn't necessarily provoke an instant "that's Halloween" reaction or do my chars need to wear pumpkin heads in each scene? In other words, does the vid need to have an obvious Halloween link or can it just "fit the season" so to speak. I understand there's a gray (or grey) area there, but some guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

That's my question too, if it was just a general horror movie sort of thing, I think I would be able to do one, but I struggle to think of something that's specifically Halloween themed.

Yes guys you can do a vid that is general Horror because it fits with what would be promoted on say "tv" because it is befitting for Halloween - so if your vid would be something i might see on "Tales from the Crypt" then it's acceptable...Just do a search of it and you will find tons of examples

It needs to be either: eerie, spooky, scary, horror, or just plain dancing in jea as candy corn to creepy music! as long as in some way it can be identified with the spirit of 'Halloween' and is recognizable to the judges as 'Halloween themed'

Pants you can submit your vid using some non GW material but keep in mind the judges will be considering if the video captures the spirit of Halloween IN Guild Wars - so I highly recommend your video is dominately and unquestionably Guild Wars and Halloween themed

Pantsma, I think you need to ask Kiti and co. about that one. I personally kept to GW only, except the initial title screen (I liked the macabre of having real skulls before the film began). But that was because I submitted my entry to the Anet art comp too.

Judges Panel for the Halloween Competition:

Judges will be sorted into four groups, the total average of the group will represent one vote in order to maintain a fair and balanced voting system. These four panels are comprised of the following groups:

1) The [Rain] Alliance
2) The DJ's of Blade Radio (issuing Honorable Mentions)
3) The Members of GWVM group
4) The Contestants themselves

Contestants will not be able to vote for themselves. All who are willing to vote must submit in order their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place choices. Voting is open after 31 October midnight GMT and must be sent from the voter's youtube mail to QueenKitiara (voting will be kept confidential) no later than 9pm GMT on November 1st (This is a very short window of Time so don't forget to vote!)

Please consider the following factors when evaluating the videos

1) Did the video follow the rules of the required use of the Halloween theme and use of music that fit the
Halloween theme as well (without expletives or inappropriate behavior).

2) Overall Entertainment value, were you impressed; would you watch it over and over?

3) Level of Originality: Something new? interesting? did it capture the essence of Halloween in GW?

4) Level of Difficulty: Was it one person just dancing in LA or was the video telling a story possibly matching
the lyrics with emotes, clever group interaction, good camera work/ angles.

5) Editing choices: Was the editing appropriate for the video? did it enhance the music or feel of the video,
did the editor use good taste when choosing to use or not use effects? Did the editing make a difference in
its entertainment value.

To our fellow GWVM's with inquiries about the submission rule:

Originally, we only allowed one submission, but after finding some people didn't read the rules and had already done the work we felt ill at the thought of saying "too bad you can't submit that" so we felt the best compromise was to allow multiple submissions with the best one selected by voters being the final submission in hopes they place as best as possible

I had made that suggestion by emulating how ArenaNet was conducting their current Halloween competition; however, we don't want the competition to become out of hand with submissions being sent to outdo the person before them so in order to keep the competition civilized we will keep the maximum amount of submissions to be a total of 2. Again, only one may place and I would think it extremely rare that 2 would be of equal quality. Since this is not like the lottery and basing entries on a game of chance but rather a quality and entertainment evaluation, I think this compromise allows the videomaker who wants to win the most a chance to really put forth their best effort without enabling anyone to abuse the system.

That being said remember that the GWVM group will count as one panel of judges. This is to ensure a balance of power of the vote, we believe that videomakers should have a voice in what they believe equals a winning submission and that may vary from what our small alliance believes in; therefore, by having judging panels we can get a more cohesive opinion overall as to which video truly deserves the top three positions.

We will not be evaluating by view count or ratings so don't worry about that. It has already been reported that someone has put a one star rating on a submission and further nullifies judging by that system. By only accepting votes from fellow GWVM group members who must email from their account; we ensure integrity as well as no manipulation of numbers from a popular vote by a large guild kindly trying to support a guildie.

I hope this gives you insight to our deeply thought out process. I really appreciate you coming to us with your (and the others') concerns. If you feel that our decision was not reasonable please submit a petition of names requesting the "only one submission rule" and we can then discuss the matter further.

Awesome, cheers BladeWind and that External Hard Drive is EPIC! I seriously cannot believe that's the prize lol. To be honest, that's sort of what convinced me to join in the first place as well as it being an awesome contest obviously, but I was going to buy an External Hard Drive to put all my files on while I reinstalled windows because it is currently riddled with viruses, it looks like a very useful. Malafide is not Arena net staff. Malafide is not Blade Radio staff. Malafide does not have the ability to modify the game more then any other gw user. This video was done as a trailer to the up coming events. Daniel is in association with Blade Radio. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause anyone, but this video was disqualified from the event for not following all the Rain Alliance qualifications.

First Official Post on You Tube!!! First and foremost Big Shout Outs to the Rain Alliance and Queen Kitiara. You guys Rock!!! A Big Shout Out to Daniel Frozenwind and Queen Malafied!!! HorrorWeen Love the EVENT, LOVE THE VIDEO!!

I realize that there might be some concern about the entrants. The Competition is just that, While I think Queen Malafied's Entry is Quite brillant and absolutely done beautifully there are and have been some complaints.

To address these concerns first allow me to preface Tesla's response which is absolutely correct. Queen Malafied is not A Net Staff nor is she Blade Radio Staff. She along with Daniel FrozenWind are doing their event aka Horrorween which is looking be a Huge success!

This should not disqualify her from being able to enter the contest. Now as I understand it the Video does not comply with the Rules of the Contest hence it's being removed.


I do however wish to recognize the outstanding work done on it, so it will be receiving a honorable Mention as to help inspire others of just what can be done. This is simply my choice as I truly am awestruck by the shear creativity of all of the Video Makers.

Yes Wolfie, upon review of the rules set by the [Rain] Alliance this video does NOT infact meet the rules which were set into place at the beginning of the competition and 3rd post on guru and the GWVM threads.

While as amazing a video as the submission was, Rain stands firm that "you can submit your vid using some non GW material but keep in mind the judges will be considering if the video captures the spirit of Halloween IN Guild Wars; your video must be dominately and unquestionably Guild Wars and Halloween themed".

As wonderful as a video it is; and I am so impressed with your skills and would love to see you educate the GWVM community. I was sad to see that your amazing video didn't adhear to the rules and standards set for the comp. In order for a competition that is made to unite and benefit the community it is imperative the the integrity of the rules remain steadfast and intact; no matter if Mr. George Lucas submitted an amazing video...I may favorite it; but I cannot allow it to qualify. <3

I respect that decission. Besides, the Queen entered not for the prize money, but simply for the sake of competition. Best of luck to everyone who did meet the rules and Grenth bless.

For those of you wondering how this video was made, first of all not a single modification of the GW client was involved. It all started with the Miya and Malafide episode 3 teaser. Back then we didn't have TexMod yet, so we took raiding parties into FoW to take dozens of screenshots of the bonedragon there. We then Photoshopped all of those screenshots back into workable textures for not only the Bonedragon, but also for myself, Miya, Regurgitator and Mad King Thorn. After that we remodelled and rigged all of the characters by using lots of examples, and tried to get them as close to the originals as possible (Yes this is hellish work). The Malafide and Miya models even got quite a complicated face rig to make a wide range of emotions possible, and Mad King Thorns cloak uses the cloth reactor simulator from 3dsmax. Everything was hand animated using 3dsmax and combinations of small pieces of footage from inside GW itself using Fraps.

For this video, we really could not start on it till a few weeks ago. I had to wait for a new pc that was able to even run 3dsmax and Adobe Premiere decently. With barely 3 weeks to spare, it was a race against the clock to get this thing done in time. I never was satistied with the face of the Malafide model in the Miya and Malafide 3 teaser, so we used a program to directly rip the models from the directx buffer. Basically anything being rendered by the game can be extracted using the right program. We placed all of the characters in their "attention-emote", because this makes them easier to rig. We ripped Malafide, Daniel, Regurgitator, and various props from the guildhall (like the storage chest) and Cathedral of Flames this way. But because the ripping program refused to work on my new pc, I was forced to use Texmod to also extract some textures and hand model the rest of the environment. All the models were then rigged again, and Malafide got a more simple face rig this time around. We used some of the bone textures from the Crystal desert to make the bonebridge, which was also hand modelled.

For the big vortex in the sky we used a blue screen, and simply used footage from the Tomb of the Primeval Kings. The tunnel at the end was actually from a loose piece of footage I once made for a fan who was attempting a GW movie. Oddly I never saw any of it, so a lot of wasted effort, or so it seems. Still, I don't mind helping out occasionally.

I spend a full weekend trying to get the whole environment right and lighting it. And to think a large part of the mainhall of the Cathedral of Flames is right behind the opening shot, behind those doors. Another weekend was lost rigging all the characters. The rest was animated over the course of the last few days.

I used music from the soundtrack Wallace and Gromit, Curse of the Wererabbit. I plundered my collection of soundeffects for this video. It contains samples from a multitude of sources, including various games such as BFMEII, Half-Life 1, Jurassic Park Operation Genesis (Demo) and 1 sample from the Warnerbrothers sound library (for Daniel's nose, hehehe). Oh, and the sample you hear when the Mad King appears is actually from the old Dungeons and Dragons cartoon. I just had to put that in there.

Malafide that sounds like an incredible amount of effort you put in to making that, well done! Sorry to hear about it being withdrawn from the contest, but I totally respect the decision. I'm sure the movie/series will be a huge success anyway, I'll definitely be promoting it if you don't mind Well done again!

Yes Oggy I will certainly be looking forward to seeing what Malafide does next, the work is so impressive! Thank you everyone that came out to LA to be with us at Nights of the Minipets event as we announced the winners live on air! We passed out over 250 Trick or Treat Bags and bags upon bags of unidentified low req. gold weapons! It was lots of fun shouting out GWVM's names on air that showed up as well as ones that won Honorable Mentions! I was overwhelmed with spam and juggling speaking on air but managed to get a group shot of the GWVM's that stood with us on the stairs...I know they all aren't in the shot so guys if u have party pics please post them!
