let's say i finish the nightfall story-line with my dervish and i want to do the factions story line next. do i get to do the same quest/mission chain if i were to bring my dervish to cantha or do i have to start a new character? if the former is correct, how does it work (difficulty, reward scaling etc) considering it's a level 20 caharcter.

Your dervish will be able to do all the quests except for the ones on Shing Jea Island, since they would have occured before your character arrived. You can still access Shing Jea Island for exploration and mission completing purposes, but there is nothing there you need to do.
In Nightfall terms, if a Tyrian/Canthan went to Elona, they would pick up the storyline just before you head over to Kourna. Everything before that would have occured before that person arrived. The storyline after that follows on as normal.
PS: Difficulty and rewards do not scale with how strong your character is. If you were to go back to Istan and look around, the monsters are still very low level. Quests are at a set difficulty and so have set rewards.

right. won't then, all the low level quests in cantha (for instance) be stupidly easy for my level 20 dervish?
Kyomi Tachibana
The Canthan mainland quests/missions are all geared toward level 19/20 in the beginning and 20's shortly afterward.
There's nothing different, except the beginning string of storyline quests you can't do on Shing Jea and of course the very first mainland mission, you'll be in Foreign Quarter.

Yes, they will be stupidly easy... but the point of doings quests in Guild Wars (at least imo) is not to see how easy and fast you can do them, it's about to be a part of the lore, the community in Elona and see how the people live under the oppression of Varesh's evil forces.
If you feel that the quests are too easy and you are too allmighty and powerful, you will soon grow tired of GW. Try instead to ease down and relax, inhale the surroundings and the enviroment. Read dialogs, watch the cutscenes... Get a feel of what it would "be like to be a part of the daily life in Guild Wars" ^^
I heard of a guy who beat Nightfall in 7 hrs... How much fun could THAT be???

Still, I like a bit of a challenge, not to say that I don't enjoy an easy quest.

well most of the quests after noob island in cantha is geared toward higher level players, you can level in cantha absurdly fast. it shouldnt be still too hard but it shouldnt be extremely easy either.

Is there, then, any point in creating another character for the factions campaign?
I remember going to Cantha with my dervish and I started doing a few quests, but they seemed to be random and not part of a cohesive plot like the ones when I started the Nightfall campaign.

theres no need to create a new character. cantha does seem a bit random if your char is not a native but, take a look at wiki and make sure you're not doing then out of sync and you'll enjoy it. after nearly completing all three campaigns on my only char, i still think cantha is slightly better that the rest.

Why not do both? All my main chars started out in Prophecies. However, I made a disposable char -- first as a rit in Factions then reborn as a para in Nightfall -- just to experience the lore from that perspective by doing all the quests on Shing Jea and in Istan that aren't available to non-native chars.

As above, why not do both? Take your Dervish through Nightfall and/or start another character in Factions - a Ritualist or Assassin (or any core class).
Anyway, as has been said, when you take a Tyrian/Elonian character over to Cantha, you start at Kaineng Center and continue from there - with the exception that you do Vizunah Square (Foreign Quarter) instead of (Local Quarter). You can go to Shing Jea Island to explore and do the missions (for the title), but you can't do any quests - but it's not needed to "finish" Factions.

BTW: It was kinda fun rushing through cause you knew what builds worked and how to run the missions etc. Stick only to Primary Quest and its over pretty quick..
