why will it not let my monks equip the skill 'words of healing'? and alsocan we use microphones and headsets in guild or aliiance chat or anything?

Yea this is very odd : / about your heros being unable to equip it might be some crazy graphics do hicky or some corruputed data file.

1) Do you have Word of Healing unlocked?
2) You can only have one Elite skill equipped at a time, maybe you already have another equipped?

well i have played GW for 18 months, this is the first time this has ever happened, so... the skill is unlocked, i use it on pvp monk and pve derk. and thanks for the tips on ventrillo

OK, let's try it step by step and see where the problem occurs. (I know it sounds idiotic, but we need to know what exactly happens)
1: Enter an outpost (can't change skills in explorable areas).
2: Add a here to the party
3: Open Skills and attibutes panel (usually letter k)
4: Click the hero's portrait to show hero's available skills
5: Check the hero's profession combination (pulldown menu)
6: Find the healing prayers skill group and expand it if necessary using the small + button
7: Grab the desired skill icon and carry it to the hero's skillbar in the skill window
8: The skill should replace the skill in the slot, and any other elite skill should disappear from the bar.
9: Once happy with the skillbar, close the Skills and attributes panel.

P.S. About microphones: Guild wars alone does not use voice chat, few games do. However, you can use the popular Teamspeak or Ventrilo software, which is not part of Guild wars, but works behind Guild wars.

The major differences between Ventrilo and TeamSpeak (personal experience):
Ventrilo servers have limited capacity and require more space/power than TeamSpeak
Better Sound on Ventrilo than on TeamSpeak
People seem to have more system errors and overall difficulty using Ventrilo than they do using TeamSpeak

Do you mean that when you're setting the skill bars the skill doesn't show up, or when you drag it onto the bar it doesn't show up?
Remember also that even if you have it unlocked your PvE characters will not be able to use it unless they've capped it. Your heroes and PvP only toons can use anything unlocked, but each individual PvE character has to buy/cap every skill you want them to use.
