Search Function

yes, i did use search. =P

currently, there is a restriction in the search function that excludes words that are too short. this poses a problem for newcomers when they try to search for things related to uw, fow, hod, sf, and other commonly used abbreviations.

i'm not sure if this would be an easy thing to change, but removing the word size restriction might be beneficial. we always encourage the use of the search function, but newer players aren't able to search for threads about uw or fow.

It's a bigger problem then even that strider... all forums restrict the size of searches and most also limit commonly used words. Searches are very hard on a database. It's a ton of requests suddenly flooding a server and the smaller the word the more frequent it's going to appear. Not only that, but the valid results it would return would actually be worse than not being able to search for it at all as it would start to show any instance of that word.

Here's a tip--when searching for 3-letter long words in search, use a wildcard (*) to push it to the 4-letter limit. You will get a few extra results, but for the most part, your results will be the desired ones.

Example:

You need to search "FOW" but can't because it's 3 letters long. Put "FOW*" instead and you'll get a list of results with anything with FOW in it.

that's an interesting way of cheating the system. it's not so much for me, but for the newer players who have never been to uw or fow and have no idea what hod is. they see these terms get thrown around a lot and have to resort to asking. i guess we will have to just bear with it.

i figured it was a limitation of the search engine itself, but wanted to throw out the suggestion anyway. if it really can't be helped, i guess it can't be helped.
