Customization of Weapons
Kaitoa
Heres an idea probably been but ide like it to be done, especially for Gw2.
When weapons are customized it would be cool if the colour of the text of the weapon would change, not to green but something differnet maby orange. Just to indicate that that weapon belongs to the character it is customzed to.
Also, the name of the weapon could change as well. So if a char customized a "furious Fellblade of fortitude" then it would add that characters name to the beginning ie "(characters name)'s furious Fellblade of fortitude"
Lastly hilts or handles could be changed and upgraded, or jem sets put in the blade. Purely as a cosmetic thing, not adding anything to the effectiveness of the weapon.
So there u go, what do ppl think?

the color change would look good, not necessary but will look good. the ...'s ... thing will become too problematic the server will need to keep track of too many names i think, the jewel idea is nice but most people dont pay close attention to weapons anyway.

Like that above guy said that naming thing could cause server porblems, guessn it would be cool if it didnt.
As for the gems thing, would be nice, but id rather see it on armor.

I dont like it, the text color takes away what rarity it is (gold, purp etc) which takes away alot of the point of nice skins.

Second the color of the item doesnt take away from the skin. If you customized it and the text went to pink its still the same skin.

Paticulary with new inscription weapons it would suck bit, anyone with a blue can claim its a gold. I mean if these 100K+ weapons are not for bragging rights and collection value what are they for?

Customizing colours wont change the selling of the thing.
Actually it would increase the value of blues and purples. people would want to buy perfect ones jsut to customize. lol.

If the server issue like the posters above me mentioned wouldn't be a problem, then that's cool. I'd like to have a sword under my name. "Owik Gall's Zealous Longsword of Fortitude." If Anet can handle the issue with the names, that would be cool. I'm quite hesitant about the color change, though. Sure, it's customized, but you risk taking out the cool color of the weapon that also signifies it's rarity. Of course it doesn't matter if you customized it since it can't be sold once you do, but it would be nice to show off its rarity. Lastly about the cosmetics of the weapon; it's a nice for the owner to bling it, but there's no point to it over all. Not many pays attention to the weapons rather than the armor. UNLESS, there is a mod surrounding the weapon that makes it stick out from all the rest. (Mystic aura, or glowing white aura, anyone?) In seriousness, I doubt that. Seems like too much work for an unnecessary thing.
Overall, the best possible success to this idea is having your name on the weapons. It's a great thing and all, but, unless they can handle the issue of the server recognizing the names it won't happen. Based on all of this I can't make this a signed, but it seems too good that I won't make it an unsigned either. Just hold onto this and maybe, hopefully, this can see the light of day in Guild Wars, or better yet, Guild Wars 2.

Orange name on a customized weapon? iirc when the Charsi, one of the Barbarians in D2, Act 5, customized a weapon for you, the color changed (gold, maybe? can't remember).
Also, Charsi would only customize 3 weapons for any given character. You had to complete a quest in order for her to do so, as it was the quest reward. Normal, Nightmare, and Hell difficulties meant 3 customized weapons.
D2 had gemstones and jewels that could be added to weapons. They functioned the same way as the existing modifiers do in GW, granting bonuses. The only difference was that each gemstone/jewel had a different effect depending on what u socketed the gem in. And you couldn't upgrade a weapon with a gemstone or jewel unless the weapon had sockets.
In regards to people wondering if the customized weapons would add extra server load: no. I see no difference in the fact that my PvP weapons are all customized. This suggestion would merely change the placement of the text, and add it to when you pinged your weaponset. That's it. I really don't think that doing this would add extra server problems.
In regards to the changing hilts/pommels and adding gems as cosmetic properties... that would cause problems. As of right now in GW, the only thing that can be changed about armor/weapons is the fact that you can dye them. There are only so many combinations that can be done with 11 different colors and 4 dye slots. Adding different pommels/hafts increases the amount of things that can be changed, and therefore, the things that the graphics engine would need to be able to keep mutable instead of fixed. That I can see causing server problems.
Anyways, /notsigned
If ANet wanted it to be this way, it would have already happened, or we would already have heard something about it. This isn't game-breaking balance we're talking about, it's eye-candy. GW has enough eye-candy already.

I think instead of customization it owuld be cool to be able to make a green as a secondary option for maybe 1k. Weapons mods can nolonger be changed, and it becomes unsellable to merchants. It gets renamed Character's Skinname, for example Helion's Tormented Recurve Bow. Other then that no thanx.
Also many people customize 100k+ weapons. If i like the skin I buy to keep. If i dont, I buy to sell for more or dont buy. I dont use any non customised weapons.

No need for that.
If a change is needed for customized items, it's to change for caster weapons and be added for foci and shields.
Even if you push me a little, I would even require customization in order to equip any item, not just armor, or just add +5 to the weapon requirement if it's not customized.
That way items people use would be removed from the market, leaving room for new drops. People would have to choose between using the items and selling them. Annoying, yes, but healthy for the economy, like it or not.
But not those king of changes you mention.
Colors are the so people can tell the rarity and quality *chuckle* of an item. Once an item is customized, you will be the only one that will really care about the item, since when you ping a weapon the color do not appear in the name.
Also, losing the 'gold' color or the real name will make even more people not customizing weapons, when what we need is more item destruction and customization to remove items from market and leave room fro new ones.
There is, though, a color change that could be made. Two of them, in fact: Crafted items and collector items.
For crafted items I would use the yellow color.
For collector items (and common quest rewards) I would use a dark blue (like the color of the names of characters inside parties in outposts) oposed to the current pale blue (the color of names of those characters with no party)

I like the names idea. I don't see how it would really be a problem unless the game is really strangely coded. Even if the game is heavily object oriented, There's got to be a property linking customization to the owner, so the data is all there... It's just one more variable, the value of which is already readily available since the player is present.
So instead of printf("%s %s of %s", prefix, weapon_name, suffix), you'd have printf("%s %s\'s %s of %s", owner_name, prefix, weapon_name, suffix).
And we know that said data is already avialable because it's using owner_name when it prints "customized by %s"
The only problem might be an extra line of code to determine if the last character of the name is an 's' to determine whether to add an 's or just an ' .
