The word damn being blocked
Ranger Jonah
Damn isn't swearing, it is even in the name for a GW monster, Damned Cleric. I have filter off but I said it in Alliance Chat where we have a no swearing rule and a load of carebears said don't use the f word. I then had to explain I meant as in the thing beavers make. Unblock?
ALF71BE
And how do you feel about that?
FlamingMetroid
technically it can be interpreted as a swear, and allot a fags would get butthurt if they unblocked it.
Tyla
Tell them that more than the dreaded "F" word is blocked, and that if they've got their filter on why do they care. No point in updating it when they just need to know the word isn't visible under the filter.
Ranger Jonah
The point is that it's used in a GW Monster's name, it seems silly to be blocked if it isn't swearing...
t3dw4rd0
In some strange twisted way, it's different context. Saying "Damn you!" is more swearyish than something being damned inherently. Technically it is a swear, or as wikipedia says a "moderate profanity." Which is enough. You don't want little five year olds who shouldnt be playing the game anyway running around saying "Goddamnit!"
thedarkmarine
Ass is fine as an animal name. Calling someone an ass is an insult. Please extrapolate.
Alleji
Yeah, it's dumb. I remember seeing a screenshot of someone spamming "I'm attacking ****ed cleric!" back in '05.
Ranger Jonah
Okay, if carebears get scared when someone says damn that keep it like that. But if someone says damned or damnation or w/e religious stuff, then unblock it if that is possible.
A Leprechaun
Beavers make dams, not damns.

Ass is an animal.
Bitch is an animal.
Bastard is a result of a child being born to unmarried people.
However, they are all also used as swear words. Context is what makes it a swear, not the word itself. I don't have a problem with the language filter, and I don't see any reason having a particular word, like damn, removed from it would be worthwhile. Not like the word is used outside of its swear uses or specific instances few people who play computer games would find themselves in. Perhaps a reason WHY it should be removed would make it more clear as to what the intent is.

Got me there I suppose...How about when I call to kill the Damned Cleric I get annoyed because their name is blocked?

If someone is insulting you and you have filter on then it may be mistaken for the f word. And you get lots of people in GW insulting each other. The f word is worse than saying damn, I find damn not very insulting, this would help avoid confusion.

If you were talking about beavers, that would imply you knew something about beavers, including how to spell the word describing the structure they're associated with building. The word there would be spelled d-a-m, dam. (DAMN, A Leprechaun bet me to it...)
So I can only conclude that you did mean the use of the word damn but perhaps not in the context of an insult.
And yes, I've experienced the same issue with the damned cleric.
And call Anet two-faced, the Vabbian Miner uses it in a sequence before a quest in Tihark Orchard:
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Vabbian_Miner
In fact they use it quite liberally throughout the series:

As for Captain ----ang, you just keep that to yourself (j/k)

Just love it when someone starts yet another justification post about swearing.
For all I care you can swear all you like but the game prohibits it so live with it.
All your posts do is let other people make a judgement call about what sort of person you are likely to be.
How much they would like to be in a party with you and best all what guild wants you as a member.
All in all you can pick up a load of information from these posts.
Hmm a Beaver Dam A Damned Cleric and Damn.
Thank goodness I had an education and learned the difference between them or I would be confused.

Going through Tyria again, Grast in Piken has a quest where he's talking about the "damnable" Charr, or something to that effect.
Of all things, damn as a word is the most moderate swear I can think of. Considering the game box says you shouldn't be under 13 playing, and people that age are entering the world of middle and high school where they'll hear profanities out the wazoo, damn is kind of on the fence as to whether it should be filtered or not.
I keep my filter off, because with casual friends and such, or if it's a heated match between friendly guilds and whatnot, a bit of trash talking is good to get the blood flowing =p. The issue here seems to be that the alliance members have their filters on, which to them, damn and the F-bomb would appear the same. What I don't understand is why they care if you have the filter on to begin with?

Some thing i would like to point out is this you can get banned for anything you say if it gets reported regardless of what form of chat you use in game including a whisper

does anyone really use the chat filter? wow

"DAMN CHARR SNUCK UP ON ME WHILE I WAS REPAIRING THIS BLASTED TREBUCHET."
Double-edged sword...if you're going to ban someone for using it, ban the game NPC's for using it. Or remove it altogether. Don't ban people for using language present and prevalent in the game.

Lol I remember seeing the temple of the damned being temple of the ----ed and I though it was actually a curse like temple of the f*cked. Haha funny story but
/notsigned
They allow removal of filtering, its at your own expense though if you space em they won't work

Turn off filter. Problem solved.

Maybe they should block it here to with a few other words if you went like this dam-ned cleric it won't be blocked.
pamelf
/signed for double standards. If they're going to filter it then they shouldn't use it. Simple as that.
Ranger Jonah
Exactly. It's just hypocritical, they don't want people over 12 years of age seeing the word damn when it is in the game anyway, in two contexts of the word, probably more. The people who should be playing this game are over 12(or should be) and we all know that damn isn't swearing.
Arduin
Didn't we just figured out DAMN is swearing? As in a religious context? Just turn off the chat filter if it bother so much. Sure, you can nitpick about every game function, but I seriously would die from laughing if the next update's notes would read:
- Damn removed from chat filter
I'd say not signed. There is a reason words are filtered, to keep immature people from abusing and swearing. I'm am certain I have already passed the poop-and-pee stage, as in, getting all exited about new words I was able to say to my parents and getting them shocked.

I doubt this or any other game will ever get to a perfect situation.
I worked in UK schools for years I know what kids said then and mostly what they say now.
Kids get uncomfortable when adults say things that they themselves use all the time do and adults are always shocked by what kids say.
I know its up to the Adults to set the standard so the companies get together with their lawyers and try to work out a balance that works across many countries.
Blocking all swearing of any kind however it is phrased is impossible.
Just having an anything goes policy is also impossible.
So we might as well leave what we have in place now and judge everything on an individual basis.

1) If you don't want your language to be policed by a guild, join a different guild.
2) A beaver dam is not spelled the same way as damn the expletive. You know what you were saying.

I grabbed my c0ck by the head and jerked it around until it came off. Then, after plucking it, we had a nice delicious roast c0ck for dinner.
While building a dam, the beaver fell in the water.. Now the beaver is all wet.
I asked my friend to bring his Stud over to my house so he could get my Bitch pregnant.
My ass is so stubborn. I have to slap my ass to even get it to move otherwise he just stands there eating his hay.
I have a pet c0ck and a pet beaver. when my c0ck and beaver get together things get ugly. But it will be ok as long as my c0ck and beaver dont meet up with my ass.
What do you prefer? C0ck meat, Beaver meat, or ass meat? they all taste too gamey for me.
(none of that is swearing)

Winner of this thread.
Seriously, if it bothers you so much, turn off the filter = problem solved.

Well done way of pointing out my comment about context. However, despite the fact it wasn't swearing, it was censor bypassing. Unless zero is now used in the proper spelling of certain words.

None of it was swearing by word context or intent
All of it would get past the filter
Much of it would be funny to those reading it.
Kids would sRED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO over it
Some would want it stopped
Arenanet would be concerned but unlikely to do anything.

Now even I am bemused by the swear filter on the group I used a none swear word basically I said a varient of Snicker but as many will see its also the N word with an s in front of it.
I used it in all inocence unfortunately any word which have a none pc word enclosed within them gets blocked.
Thus we get the sRED ENGINE
Ranger Jonah
SirSausage, it's not me that needs to turn the filter off...

Taking the original slightly out of context still leaves us with something correct. In truth if you get enough reports for someone using 'abusive language' you can get them temp banned even if the one being reported hasn't done anything.

Odd, my filter is on and when ever i say damn or another person says damn it isnt blocked....i have my filter on normal
