I was taught to respond to what I think is fair and not. Not having originally made the top 40 I could live with and was at that point planning how I could improve it. With how I was raised I believe it is not fair for my entry to be bumped when it looks like favoritism because of comments outside the judging. Yes, I know the world is not fair but that doesnt mean I cant do what I think to try and make it more so. This is not me being greedy, this is me thinking of others that 'were just shy of the list' and believing if I wasnt originally good enough to make it that there must have been someone else that was voted better and who hadn't posted their entry for others to see and comment on and cause possible influence when a spot opened. It strongly goes against my beliefs to have favorites played like that, and being the one being favorited was actually hurtful and insulting and not something I wanted to tolerate. If there wasn't a back up list agreed on by the judges than the space should be empty. That is what I was taught was fair for judged contests.
Below is the email that I was sent in reply for others to see. You confirmed to me that I wasn't actually next in line and that I was given the spot because of a coworkers suggestion and not because of a list that existed outside the top 40 as backup. You say you dont read the forums fully so the comments about my entry did not cause you to add me, but keep in mind those comments very well might have influenced that coworker's decision to ask I be bumped. I did not say that entries outside the top 40 were never judged on but that I seriously doubted I was magically 41 (and yes, my feelings on it). This makes in my mind awarding it to me unfair to the other entrants and I could not in good conciousness accept that.
I did not want a prize in a judged contest if it was not actually voted to be there. I was right that I was not actually judged as next in line and so counted it as a pity prize. It was not voted on by the judges to be there so it shouldnt have been put there. Everyone should be subject to the same rules and processes.
If others were in my spot and held the same beliefs of right and wrong they might understand my viewpoint more but I do not expect everyone to. This is the last I plan on posting on this matter since I have already derailed this thread enough. If people understand my viewpoint, great. If they want to write me off as being ungrateful, that is their choice.

Dear Regina,
I respectfully request that the prize go to the person who was actually judged as #41. That my entry just happened to be one step off the list after the comments on the fan forums about my work being overlooked is beyond belief and one can only come to the conclusion that my name was bumped up solely because such comments and not because it was actually judged. To add me as a pity prize is insulting to my work and a shameful act of pandering. By removing my name it will allow me to alter and resubmit my entry next year and hope for a fair judging. Thank you.
Sincerely, Koreena

Dear Koreena:
It is, of course, your prerogative to decline.
My information about the disqualified entry came on the day of the winners announcement, in private, not from the fan forums. I am not intimately familiar with what you report as controversy surrounding your specific entry. This is because it is not productive for me watch these discussions closely, as I cannot do a thing if the aesthetic opinions of players differs from the aesthetic opinions of my coworkers. It is not an efficient use of my time to pay detailed attention to discussions that I can do absolutely nothing about.
I read scores and scores of forum posts every single day, and I need to skim through and filter the information I need very rapidly. In the case of the Halloween art contest, I skimmed the forums for specific action-items, things that I could actually do something about, in this case – the accusations of plagiarism and rule-breaking.
It was actually suggested to me by a fellow staff member that you be awarded the prize. I was originally not going to award an alternate to the empty Finalist slot. Whether they wanted to award the prize to you for “pity” as you say, I honestly don’t know, because I did not question their judgment or their taste in what they found aesthetically pleasing about your entry. I took their opinions about your art at face value, and didn’t insinuate any kind of political agenda on their part. The fact that you have come to such a conclusion is actually a little hurtful.
Before you leap to conclusions, I would ask you to consider that you may not have all the information on which to base those conclusions, and that decisions made may not have any underlying conspiracy or political agenda behind them.
Thank you for your letter, and good luck next year.
Regards,
Regina G. Buenaobra
