I recently went up against Cyndr with a couple of my guildmates. We were not organized enough and simply got spanked. I did a little reading and decided to bring Shelter, Pain, and Soul Twisting. The idea was that I could mostly keep Shelter up enough by doing a Twist to Pain over and over. And it rocked. No one took more than 60 hp damage from him. I was lauded a hero. All was right in the world.
Now I roll a Chan/Comm split like this:
[Splinter Weapon][Nightmare Weapon][Vampirism][Bloodsong][Shelter][Soul Twisting][PvE skill of need][Flesh/Flesh]
I know it's not the sacred ChanResto, but it really stops spikes in HM and dungeons. I have to wait between fights for Energy, but I can usually keep Shelter up, the other spirits help with the Health steal, and the weapons aid the front liners.
Any idea for improvements? Maybe add Ancestor's and Essence Strike? But what to drop? Or should I abandon all hope and go back to ChanResto?

needs moar energy managment. Essence strike might help, but I'm not sure. Personally I'd suggest commune/spawn instead of channel/commune, but that's just me.

Bring one of the spirits with 15 or 20 sec reacast. [Destruction] maybe. You could also bring [signet of creation] and/or [signet of binding] as the spirit will die fast anyway.

What kind of attribute points and gear did you bring? If you have a few points in Spawning Power, [Boon of Creation] might help.

At 14-16 Communing Shelter is a level 8 spirit.

It loses 47-43HP each time it prevent more then 10% damage.
Considering you are running Channeling also - this means that you won't invest much into Spawning.
Best possible option - you drop Channeling to 0 - this means that Shelter has 96 extra HP. This means at 15(Spawning)/16(Communing) - Shelter has 256HP and loses 43 per save.
Which means it protects from 5 attacks/spells.
And you wasted JUST your elite slot, 2 slots on spirits, and additional slots to manage energy to achieve that.
The words you are looking for are "Protective Spirit".
